Now, if she's not careful, she closes her eyes and sees the explosion that killed her mother. She closes her eyes and sees Jinx. And, worst of all, sometimes she closes her eyes and sees Vi. The only method she's found of keeping all that at bay is to stay up late and scour through every scrap of evidence, over and over, until she's sure every lead is exhausted in the hunt for Jinx, until she's so worn out that when she finally closes her eyes, she'll be asleep before she can see anything.

Tonight, there's snow outside and frost is creeping up the windows, and a roaring fire is heating the room. Maddie is curled against her, a blanket draped around both their shoulders, the other girl's body heat a pleasant warmth on such a cold night. Someone, at some point, handed her a cup of tea that she's cradling in both hands.

It should be cozy. It should be comforting.

But her gaze is fixed on the photographs and reports scattered across the table in front of her.]
