RULES

(play pretend): our characters have to pretend to be married or betrothed to be allowed in the same room together.
(one bed): while on the run, our characters must share a bed.
(courtly love): one character is a knight at the service of the other character, and they have courtly love behavior.
(it can never be): one character is married while the other is a knight not allowed to be married. Theirs is an impossible romance.
(coronation): character two is crowned king/queen, and character one is watching closely.
(succession): the unlikely heir, character two is crowned heir to the realm while character one, their fiance/lover watches.
(where our hands touch): our characters hands touch accidentally causing them to pause mid-conversation.
(do not strike): character one is about to slap character two for an offense but character two catches character one’s hand, bringing them close.
(am i not enough): character two finds out that character one has a mistress/lover.
(i am not taken): character one questions character two’s relationship with someone, and character two informs them said someone is their relative, to character one’s delight.
(yo-ho a pirate’s life): character one is a pirate and character two finds themselves on their ship.
(bridal style): character two is injured and character one picks them up to avoid further injury.
(your coat is warmer): character one is cold or underdressed and character two places their coat on their shoulders.
(sworn enemies as lovers): despite being sworn enemies, our characters pretend to be lovers/or marry to join forces against a bigger enemy.
(the faints): character one faints/trips and character two is there to catch them.
(in the rain): our characters are caught in the midst of rain and seek refuge while it passes. They are alone.
(bath): character two is taking a bath and character one appears in the room, taking in the suggestive view.
(masquerade): at a ball, people are encouraged to dance. Sender and character two do not know one another and dance under the guise of strangers.
(masquerade for us): character one and character two know each other and play pretend during the night with their masks on.
(like a shoe): character one helps the character two with their shoes, and their hand lingers on character two's ankle.
(through the mirror): character one asks to receive to help them out of their dress, and character two takes their time with each lace.
(how it begins): our characters are encouraged to talk alone, hoping to find common ground for a marriage.
(bedding): character one and character two were wed and now it’s their wedding night.
(the gods are our witness): character two and character one fooling around, the desire grows with each day.
(their knight): character two is a knight/prince who gives their cloak to a lady/princess to help her cover herself.

(shut me up): during an argument, the character one forcefully kisses character two to shut them up.

(it’s fate): character one and character two are fated to be together and they meet, they can feel it in their souls.
(what is honor in the hands of love): despite not being wed, our characters sleep together in a night of thirst and love.

James is standing guard - as he is sworn to do - thinking that this woman very well may be the true death of him. He might be pledged to her, willing to lay down his life for her protection, but this? Is not her protection. This is an initially ill advised plot for her to go out and gain information, to use shadows and trickery to her advantage and her clever disguises as a means of throwing off the scent of her trying to figure out the best course forward for their kingdom. He's simply drug along in this, due to an unrelenting loyalty to her and being sworn to secrecy by her King father, to make sure someone close to her is able to watch her back and make certain she finds her rightful place on the throne in the end.

House Romanova needs to solidify itself as a stronghold - they are able to support the military and their exports with the gold they have, but it does not mean it is limitless and it means alliances may need to be made - and there's whispers of a usurper in the midst, because despite being the oldest of the heirs, Natalia is a woman and women are seen as weak. James would argue she's anything but that - she's cunning, determined, fierce and fully capable of ruling the kingdom.

She just needs to learn how to show back up to her chambers on time.

He's counting to himself, grip tightening on the handle of his sheathed sword at his side and the low lighting in this particular wing of the castle glints against the chainmail and metal armor he wears, the shoulder of the left side dipping down to display a red star to signify his place within the guard.

During his count, he hears a rustle from inside her chambers and that alerts him - he takes a quick glance around, ensuring no one along in the hall - before a quiet opening of the door and shutting it as he moves to catch her in the act of sneaking around the room. His hand reaches out to grab her, his hold firm but there's enough give that she could wiggle her way out if she wanted to. He taught her, after all.

"You're late, Princess." His tone is low, speaking against her hair in the near-darkness of the room. "But it appears your neck is intact and no one followed after you, so your secret remains kept."

[M/F, AU! Going for something with him born into the Shiba clan as a noble son.]

[Karin cursed under her breath, feeling the wind on her face. The young man who darted through the battlefield to find her and drag her free from harm had done so in a flash, holding her to his chest while she grasped at the white haori he'd worn. He hadn't looked much older than her but in his eyes was the same, familiar glower she'd often worn. Half-heartedly, Karin complained and held onto him until he let her back down on her feet, as relieved to be alive as she was to be free of his overly protective grasp. In his other hand, he clutched a bloody cleaver of a sword and, in the same breath that she spoke, a row of hollows turned to dust after being cut from the tops of their heads and down.

In the courtyard, the panic of battle continued. Ryuko had saved her earlier but that break was short-lived and they'd gotten separated easily when more and more hollows came in, attracted by her duel.]

I asked for a squad. Ichigo--you'll get in a lot of trouble, coming here without approval! Captains can't just... Gah!

[Without warning, he grabbed her by the shoulder and hugged her to his chest one more time. After he planted a kiss on top of her head and vanished, Karin left a few of the onlooking students chilled by the cackling that erupted from her lips. Red in the face from what felt like the ultimate embarrassment, she wreaked havoc on her side of the grounds while Ichigo strode through and started cutting through each hollow he could find. Eventually, he crossed paths with the girl his sister described in her reports, tearing through hollows with the sort of savagery he'd have expected from the nightmarish Kenpachi.

There were still hundreds of hollows descending, hoping to devour any student they could find with one of those uniforms on but it wasn't as if they'd gone without protection. In the chaos, there were members of the student council darting about and laying waste to those creatures, allowing him that moment. Ichigo was, after all, more interested in the one who fit the description from Karin's numerous reports. As it were, he wore a stern expression--looking over her shoulder and almost through her in a gesture that almost seemed egotistical. Over his shoulder hung his sword, the blood on the end of it rapidly turning to dust even as he spoke.

He was trying to present himself with a straight face even as he heated up. The whole of his face was burning crimson as thoughts and wires tangled up, one after the other. What was that outfit!? Was that the girl Karin was hanging out with!?]

Matoi Ryuko? I wanted to thank you for helping my sister. [Gulp. He had to keep his gaze where it was with the strictest discipline. He was the representative of his division. They looked up to him for protection and respected him in his service and--!!]

...She sent an emergency call for aid and said you had her back while she was investigating Honnouji. I can take care of the rest, so you should... have time to... fall back and relax and... get dressed.
