THE CRIMINAL AU MEME

THE CRIMINAL AU MEME

Warning: This meme will contain violent content and possible triggers.

HOW TO PLAY:
1) Post a comment below, detailing your character and canon. For best results, DO NOT LEAVE THIS COMMENT BLANK; pick a role, or an AU, or write up a little on what you'd like to explore with your character.
2) Tag around and make magic happen.
3) If you get stuck, use RNG to select from the options below.

THE ROLE.
1) Criminal. (The one who committed the act.)
2) Law enforcement. (Cop, FBI, prison guard.)
3) Witness. (What did you see?)
4) Victim. (Probably not applicable in the case of murder. … Probably.)
5) Lawyer, judge, or paralegal. (Participant in the legal system.)
6) Private security. (Unaffiliated, but with an interest in keeping your client safe. Or in getting your target caught.)
7) Other. (Let your imagination go wild.)

THE CRIME.
1) ROBBERY. The crime of stealing via force or threat or fear.
You need the money. You're desperate. You have the gun, the convenience store is right there, and everything will be better once you've finished the job.

Or maybe you've been hired. Provide a little intimidation, and someone else will take care of all your problems.

Or it's a thrill. Rolling across the country, robbing banks as you go. A Bonnie & Clyde crime spree, and it can only end one way.

2) BURGLARY. Illegal entry into a building for the purposes of committing theft.
Non-violence, for you; you're just going to break in, take this one thing. Maybe a television, to sell for the cash. Maybe some jewelry, a computer.

Or maybe you're a master thief, dangling from a wire into a museum. Sliding through the air ducts of a skyscraper in search of a particular little item.

3) GRAND THEFT AUTO. The criminal act of stealing a motor vehicle.
You know your cars. And you can steal one in under 60 seconds. Better hope you don't get tripped up with one of those newfangled security systems.

4) MURDER. The act of killing another.
He had to die. He had to, and the guilt of knowing where you buried the body, of knowing that the police are coming after you -- it's starting to wear down your sanity.

5) SERIAL MURDER. A crime involving the killing of three or more people over a period of more than a month.
You have a drive to kill. Again, and again. Nothing satisfies it, nothing stops it. Maybe you hate yourself. Maybe you hate the human scum who only exist to go under your knife.

Or maybe you're a professional hit man. You've killed dozens, you know how it goes. It's just business.

6) CONSPIRACY. An agreement between two or more persons to break the law at some time in the future.
Mafia, Yakuza, crime families who keep their operations quiet under pain of death, dishonor, betrayal of the family. You're part of one of these operations, whether as a patriarch or a peon.

7) FRAUD. Intentional deception made for personal gain.
Blackmail. Cover-ups. Insider trading -- the marks of corporate crime. Perhaps you're a CEO who thinks they can do whatever they want. Perhaps your business is on the rocks and you just need a little time to make your golden parachute before you ditch it.

Or maybe you meant to destroy it. Maybe you're a professional con man, and you're stepping away from your latest conquest with plenty of cash in hand.

8) KIDNAPPING. The false imprisonment of another person against their will.
Do you do it for the ransom? For the money? For revenge?

Or is it a hostage situation, with dozens of prisoners, for some sort of political gain?

9) TERRORISM. The systematic use of terror, especially as a means of coercion.
For a religion, for a philosophy. But -- are you a terrorist, or are you a freedom fighter? It might just be a matter of point of view.

10) WILD CARD. For any crime not mentioned above.

Do I know you?

[Even as he asked the question, Loki knew for a fact that he did. Sarah Manning, a woman who had helped him steal a particularly nice car a while ago. Loki was very good at carjacking, but it had taken him a while to get a handle on some newly introduced security measures. Sarah had filled in some gaps in his knowledge.

It had been a wrench, to give her as big a share as he had of the sales, but even Loki couldn't deny that she had earned them.

So it was surprising, to say the least, to be suddenly facing her across the table in an interrogation room. Not a lot surprised Loki, but he'd done a genuine double take when she'd entered.

He'd bee brought in on breaking and entering charges, and they'd seized his bag before he could ditch it and found some rather suspect equipment inside. "Conspiracy to commit murder" was currently being dangled over his head. The only leverage he had was his partner, who had ditched Loki the second he'd heard the sirens coming.]

[Giles has his suspicions. Currently, they aren't anything more than that.

They still aren't leaving him alone, either. Something about Jenny's death doesn't add up. "Natural causes", they tell him. Unfortunate, regrettable, but natural.

But for a self-professed health nut to drop dead on school grounds in the dead of night, with footprints leading away from the crime scene? That, to him, says murder. Just because they haven't bothered to really look and see how she was killed doesn't mean it isn't murder.

The old FBI agent is only getting through the day now with the promise of digging into this case. He does his casework, he keeps his team informed, but at the end of the day he settles down with his tea to go through the files and reports. And maybe all of these disconnected coincidences don't add up to a case that would hold up in court. But he's well past caring.]

[Cases of international fraudulent crimes were rare, not that they didn't happen, but the bureaucratic tape that went into just who had authority, and whose case it was to investigate made tracking those criminals down all the more difficult.

Sulu was aiming for one of the major cases though. Ties to organized crime, identity theft, the whole works... then he got this pushed onto his desk. Some small con-artist who just happened to upset the wrong old lady. An old little russian woman who was distantly related to his partner's family. How could he say 'no' to Chekov when the man had taken a bullet for him?

Anyway, while his partner was in recovery, the least he could do was track down the swindler that took grandma Chekov's antique clock. He had a picture of the item, and a general description of the girl who'd sweet talked her way into the house. That was a good start.

[They'd herded every agent and worker still in the building to the break room. Given that it had been well after midnight when they'd struck, this hadn't been many.

But it was morning, now, and the building was surrounded by law enforcement and concerned citizenry. He could occasionally hear the whirring sound of helicopter blades from outside the window. Judging by the heated nature of the phone call he'd overheard before the leader retired from the room, Giles wasn't sure that negotiations for their release were going very well. If they hadn't rigged the building with explosives that had already taken out the front entrance, this probably would have already gone to a firefight. After all, the data on the computers and locked away in the files was probably more important than their lives.

As it was, Giles wasn't doing well. He'd put up too much of a fight when they'd invaded, and wound up shot as an example to the others. It was nothing immediately life threatening, just the arm. But if he was stuck here too much longer, Giles didn't like his chances.

Thank god for Carlos and the makeshift bandages.]

[Poor girl.

They'd given up hope on finding her alive. The usual timeline of her kidnapper should have left her dead six hours ago. If they hadn't found a few promising leads they'd never had before on this bastard, the case would never have gotten as far as it had after that.

As it was, at long last, they'd tracked the man to his hideout. And while the remains of a dozen girls before Lara were even now being dug up in the vacant lot behind the building, and Lara herself had been recovered unharmed, there was no sign of the man who'd taken her.

She was currently their only possible witness to where her kidnapper might have gone - if she had any information, remembered anything, they needed it. So they'd brought her back to the station, to patch up her injuries and try to coax her into talking.]

[Winter in Sweden is just so bitterly cold, and rather than face the frigid winds and unpredictable storms, Nanako spends her days abroad in the warmth and relative comfort of her hotel room. Although it's not luxurious, she's come to study more than sight-see, and it has a roaring fireplace and blankets—what more could she want?

With earnest intentions to brush up on her stilted English, she spends hours studying, while the snow muffles the outside world with powdery, white fluff. The clock on the wall reads almost midnight, and to prevent herself from falling asleep, the television quietly drones on in the background: news reports, although she can understand only bits and pieces of the Swedish—Double murderer wanted. Lisbeth Salander. Black hair, blue eyes, prominent piercings. It's a grim topic to listen to, but it keeps her awake and focused—history of psychopathic behavior, the television continues.

It's half past eleven, and Nanako is just about to switch off her light, to pull the covers over herself and sleep deeply, when she hears a commotion next door. Crashes, bangs, a muffled voice. Startled, she yanks her head away from her vocabulary sheets, her heart pounding frantically in her chest. Details of shootings and killings rush to her mind, and she immediately scolds herself for listening to morbid topics so late at night. She ought to go see what all the commotion is, just to check up on her neighbor.

Opening her door with trembling fingers—just the cold, she tells herself—she steps out into the dark hotel hallway. In fragmented, accented English, she calls:]

[More than a bit awkward, to be standing in the preparation room beside the court, to be briefed for an upcoming case. Not nearly because Marius has not actually much practiced his degree in the Law since receiving it, preferring the easy and forgettable translations that funded what little he required in life. Rather, he had found need to be here today, to do a gamut run of petty public crimes, and to play lawyer as best and justly as he might be able.

Indeed, such a tall order might already be imposing enough, but it was more so when he had learned the name of the attending officer today. Inspector Javert... yes, he. Rather remembered it, didn't he. The two pistols he had borrowed and not yet returned sat in Courfeyrac's apartment, where he'd hidden them upon leaving the scene of the crime he had born witness to, in order that he might escape questioning by the same Javert.

Back to the door, he tried uselessly to focus on the few notes on the case, hoping rather uselessly that he might not come.]

[Burglars were nothing new. There was always someone, somewhere stealing something. But thieves who left a note were a bit odd. Well, not so much a note as a signature. Always on the same shade of blue construction paper (though the brand of paper changes, but all cheap and store bought), and same shade of dark blue marker. Left over and over at the homes of the wealthy now several treasures poorer. The oddest thing is, perhaps, aside from the note and the missing items, there was not a trace of anyone having been in there.]

[No fingerprints, no footsteps, not even an oddly disturbed layer of dust. It certainly wasn't any two bit cat burglar.]

[But there was a pattern. The targets had all worked for a company that had recently done a major lay off. All while the targets had received extremely generous bonuses (the items stolen all roughly equaled the amount they received). And there was just one person left on that list.]

[If the thief followed her pattern, it would be that night she'd strike.]
