[ There are a lot of blankets in the Martin house. Like, a lot. It's almost like her mother compensated for the divorce and her sister going to college and having to work more than usual by taking multiple trips to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and spending a small fortune on throw pillows and shams. It's a little ridiculously - ridiculously stylish, that is - but makes sleepovers a blast, and impromptu camping in the living room very easy to do.

It'd started with pushing the coffee table out of the way, then laying sleeping bags and comforters on the carpet and fetching pillows from Lydia's room and the guest room. The sheets come from the linen closet, and when it turns out she'd grabbed too many, they drape them from the backs of dining chairs like children. And admittedly, grown up girls and boys as they are, it's really nice to pretend to be children every once and a while. Between South American lizards, werewolves, and a slew of psychopaths, they kind of deserve it. Though they haven't regressed to the point of Disney musicals, they have cookies (what, like baking's hard? it's like chemistry, with chocolate chips as a reward at the end) and hot chocolate. There's a laptop on top of a natural science text book, with 8 seasons of Charmed queued, and The Notebook and Hairyspray on standby.

They have to sprawl on their stomachs, and their feet keep bumping the couch, but it's cozy and their cell phones aren't blowing up, so everything's peaceful. Almost too peaceful, because soon Lydia's getting sleepy and antsy. But this is easily rectified by prodding Alan in the arm and asking sweetly; ]
Can I paint your nails?

[The invitation for a sleepover had come as a surprise, but he knew that Lydia needed a little bonding time. A little normalcy in the supernatural chaos that was now her life. If anyone could understand, it was Alan. Both of them had wound up having boyfriends that were a little less human and a little more something with claws and fangs. Both of them had found out the hard way what was real and what wasn't, though Alan had a whole family of people he could talk to about it. Lydia had her mother. Which... wasn't saying much. Mrs. Martin was a decent woman, but she had very different priorities.

So being invited over to just watch things, chat, and try to be normal had come as a pleasant and welcome surprise. The fact that it had turned into a fort had just been icing on the cake for him. He hadn't been to many sleepovers growing up; they moved too often for him to make any decent friends. This was nice and it was a little bit of a way to make up for what he'd lost out on.

Then she had to make that suggestion.]

Why don't you paint your own nails?

I painted mine yesterday, [ she drawls. And, yes, here they are - neat french tips oh so neatly displayed in his face before she draws them back to admire them herself. Damn, she's good at this. And pretty good at talking people into things as well. ]

Besides, I didn't say 'let's paint our nails'. [ Wow, those cuticles are neat. ] I said I wanted to paint yours. I think I have the perfect color, too.

[ A reasonably sad part of this story is the distinct lack of female friends Lydia has managed to retain. She has boyfriends, and then boy friends, which were unfortunately usually Jackson's friends, and without any girlfriends she's just had to make due. With the bottles of Ready Red and Sequin Denim nail polish she may or may not have preemptively brought down with her pillows. ] You can take it off if you don't like it.

You can if you're that bored, but don't expect me to keep it on. I'm not the nail polish type.

[He also wasn't the mani-pedi spa type either. He liked the outdoors, he liked being active, and he liked getting dirty. How they'd wound up as friends was as much a mystery to him as it probably was to everyone else. Well, he did have a sense of fashion. That had been the catalyst to this whole thing.]
