Dex had picked up the bodyguard job for the usual reasons he did. It wasn't about the money, even though it was quite good. It was because it gave him a chance to put the carefully cultivated skills he'd acquired over long years of hard work to good use. Dex took pride in what he was able to do. There weren't a lot of professions open for someone who enjoyed hurting and killing people but this was one of the few legitimate ones. It allowed him to both stay on the right side of the law and keep his carefully structured life in order.

He'd expected Kitty to be much the same as other celebrities he'd babysat guarded before: a sweet persona when the cameras were pointed at him that evaporated to reveal a spoiled, vapid, and overall unpleasant bastard when they were off. Someone who only cared about himself and his image at the expense of everyone else around him. He'd seen it happen time and again.

He kept waiting but it hadn't happened yet. Kitty appeared to be just as sweet, kind, and caring when he was on his own surrounded by nothing more than the hired help of his entourage as when he was onstage singing or doing yet another photoshoot. It was just a matter of time Dex thought cynically. They always showed their true colors in the end. He'd tried to remain aloof and professional even as Kitty had tried to take an interest in him personally, almost as if he wanted to be friends.

At the moment, he was just getting offstage at the end of his latest concert. Kitty looked exhausted but happy after the final song of the encore the fans had been clamoring for. His white shirt was sticking to him with how sweaty it was and Dex would have been lying if he didn't at least understand the sex appeal he oozed as a singer. He greeted everyone warmly but Dex wasn't even paying attention at the moment. Something about their surroundings felt....off. He didn't like it. Over the years, he'd learned to trust his instincts. If they told him something was out of place here, he wasn't going to dismiss them.

He moved towards Kitty, speaking in a low and urgent tone. "We should get out of here."

It was not unexpected that Colleen was going to need help. Given that she is stuck on another world with her two young sons due to magical shenanigans that still give her a headache and more problems than she can currently deal with she was glad she had help.

Help by the way of steady work given the fact she was incredibly talented with languages. She did not, however, expect the fact that she was going to be targeted by someone. She didn't get it personally because she had done her best to come off as totally harmless and not that important.

The bodyguard was also unexpected. It seemed the rich noble funding this expedition into these ruins did not want his translator getting kidnapped. Again. Colleen had tried to protest but when she saw who they hired she just gave up because he seemed like the type to not listen to her protests of being fine.

Besides the fact her son who came off as more 'fae touched' than his twin was totally fascinated by Orym. Connor had accidentally let Orym in on part of the family secret that they were close descendents of a sidhe warrior which was why he thought someone was after his parent. Colleen pretended her son was much better at keeping secrets than he was.

That said she is currently standing on a wobbly crate trying to translate an etching on the wall. It is getting late and there's a cramp in her leg but she almost has it done. She has somehow managed to go a full hour without grumbling out loud at the wall. Colleen is not known for being silent but for now she is.

[ when vander brought up the subject of hiring on a bodyguard, vi had been immediately resistant.

of course she had. for one thing, it just didn't look right that the lead singer of a punk band should need protection, especially when that punk band was daughters of zaun. all three of them -- vi, jinx, sevika -- had earned their reputations for being able to protect themselves, but especially vi. it was typically vi caught throwing a punch at paparazzi trying to snatch a picture of her latest conquest, it was vi who racked up the lawsuits, and it was vi who pushed for more of their extreme stunts, like holding an impromptu concert right outside the home of councilor salo.

what really got to vi, though, was the idea of having a babysitter in all but name. probably some ex-enforcer, strait-laced man-mountain who'd be clearing rooms for her and making things awkward by presence alone. she could already see her love life ("love" is maybe the wrong word) taking a hit. so yes, when vander brought up the topic, she'd shrugged and said there was no need.

vander's response had been to state very bluntly that she'd been shot. vi felt that was a serious exaggeration; the bullet grazed her arm, and barely enough to do more than give her another badass scar to show off to the ladies in the last drop. the incident hadn't really been a big one; someone just pulled a gun on her while she was out in an alley, spouted some anti-zaun rhetoric and fired. it wasn't like that kind of thing didn't happen.

crucially, she hadn't been shot-shot. she could have a bodyguard when she's eventually shot, but not until then. vander was not swayed by this "logic", and she eventually agreed, more to please vander than anything else. after all, another manager might ask her to tune down the outspoken political comments; she's certainly seen other zaunite bands try to push more into the mainstream by scrubbing away their identity. vander not only knows better, but he's as much of a believer as vi. they're the daughters of zaun, for fuck's sake, and no amount of death threats pouring in are going to change that.

vi wants to keep speaking out, wants to keep pushing, wants to keep trying to make things better because the one controversial, politically-charged opinion she keeps to herself is that... things can be better between them. there can be unity. she learned that when she was just a kid, playing with little caitlyn kiramman in that big cavernous mansion where vander and benzo did repairs. she remembers how crisp the air felt topside, and how guilty she eventually felt for wanting to stay there forever.

it had been a formative summer, spent with little caitlyn kiramman. fighting over a funny-shaped rock they found, chasing each other through the grounds, running into the greenhouse out of the rain, fighting neighboring bullies who poked fun at strange caitlyn with her undercity pet. then, everything had blown up. that word, pet, had twisted in her too sharply to be ignored. so she'd gathered up powder, mylo and claggor to slip into one of those neighboring houses and maybe pick up a few things from people who didn't deserve it, in service of people who needed it. people like them.

as vi had shoved items into a sack, her mind hadn't been on the job. she'd been thinking about caitlyn, about how maybe she could live topside one day... with her. perhaps that was why she'd been caught and the others hadn't. either way, the outcome was the same. caitlyn's mother hit the roof, and vi found herself facing the first -- but not last -- stint in juvie. it felt like appropriate punishment, for daring to dream of abandoning zaun. ]
