Pepper doesn't know how it happened. She had shown up at Natalie's door fully intent on firing her and getting to the bottom of what exactly she had done in order to stir Tony up to the point that he would go head to head with Rhodey.

Ever since Natalie had shown up, Tony had been acting increasingly erratically and while a part of her knew that Natalie couldn't be entirely to blame, her world was spinning enough out of control that she needed someone to blame.

Except somehow when she'd shown up last night, things had taken a surprising turn. Natalie hand ended up talking her down, commiserating in the difficulties in handling Tony and assuring her that she had no interest in the former CEO of Stark Industries. In fact, her interest lied heavily with the current person in that position.

Which all explains how she managed to find herself in Natalie's bed this morning, but does nothing to explain what on earth she's supposed to do now. She slips out of bed, being as careful as she can not to disturb Natalie and begins gathering up her clothes, feeling incredibly flustered.

She shifted on the hotel room's bed as Maya murmured her thanks, but in this particular world no knock came from the door to interrupt them. In this little reality, Pepper crawled a little closer up the bed instead, one hand lifting to reach carefully for the clotted gash on Maya's forehead with gently probing fingers and a small wince. "You should let me look at that," she offers. "I've gotten pretty good at minor repairs, these last few years."

Minor repairs that were doing her usual target no good, with Tony off in some place that has snow and wooden indians and, potentially, answers for him. Some place beyond where she can be any help at all. But Maya's here, and for a moment Pepper's smile lost some of its brittleness.
