1. first day
Catch up with old friends, brave new teachers, fight your way through the sea of students, and hope you're in the right classroom. Oh, you're the new kid. Well, that's okay as long as you've got more than enough summer vacation anecdotes to fill ten pages of Times New Roman size 12, single-spaced.

2. first period
You're gonna be late! Or are you already there? Class hasn't started just yet, so chat it up or copy your classmate's homework before the teacher gets here.

3. lesson proper
You're probably diligently taking notes, looking out the window daydreaming or reciting in class, much to your teacher's delight - or dismay. Try not to be too obvious when counting down the minutes and pass that note as discreetly as possible.

4. faculty
Have a bone to pick with your terror math teacher. A crush on the cute chemistry teacher? There might be something you want to ask your homeroom teacher about. In any case, you plan on seeing a faculty member today. Or maybe they plan on seeing you!

5. lunch break
Man, you are starving. Hopefully, today's menu has something good. If the crowded cafeteria's not your thing, try the rooftop.

6. hooky
One of you is skipping class. You should try talking them out of it if that's your thing.

7. detention
What on earth did you do to get this? Oh well. Detention can't be that bad when you've got all these very nice, approachable model students around to talk to.

8. p.e.
Baseball, basketball, dodgeball - no matter the sport, just remember: you are the star. It's you. At least, you hope it is.

9. home ec
Sewing! Cooking! ... Try not to burn the school down!

Frog dissections! Explosions!

Oh boy, oh boy, being the star of this play is your dream. It isn't? Oh. You're still helping with the props and costumes, right?

If you need to look something up or just want some peace and quiet, this is the place. Whatever you do, shh, people are trying to read.

Whether they take the form of Nelson Muntz or Regina George, if you choose to meet them at the gym at four o' clock or else, be ready to face the consequences... or maybe you don't have to. Not when someone's here to help you out. (This can go either way - one of the participants can be the bully or someone helping the victim.)

You're having trouble with a class or you're trying to make up for the days you were absent. It's a good thing someone was nice enough to offer their assistance.

Assuming that you actually have one. Are you writing for the school paper? Part of the student council? The marching band? Maybe you're a member of one of those weird occult clubs or something...

Do you have a dress? A date? Who are you voting for prom king? Is being on prom committee is driving you crazy? Do you even care?

"Shh." She chided it unnecessarily, more knee jerk than need, since he'd already caught himself. The teacher gave them a glance but, again, they weren't setting anything on fire so they could be safely ignored. "It wasn't on purpose. I just happened to be the one by the bulldozer when the principal came out." She didn't want him to get the wrong impression about her friend and she touched his hand to make sure she had his attention. "Aerith wanted to confess when she found out but we'd probably just have both ended up in detention and this way she can save her plants and we can get our parking lot."

McCoy shook his head. He knew of Aerith by reputation - the hot, hippie-dippie girl, who (despite her flower-child inclinations) was also one of the nicest people in school. She was well-liked - she'd even turned Jim down in the sweetest way McCoy had ever witnessed, and he doubted she'd send one of her best friends packing off to detention without a damned good reason.

"Still. You better be getting dinner out of this at the very least."

She couldn't help it. The fact he seemed to actually care about her in this whole convoluted mess was... it was really sweet. Not that their friends didn't care about her, it was just that the concern was usually more spread out and less focused on her alone. She kind of liked the way it felt. But that didn't mean she could get away with being unfair.

"No dinner probably." She shot Leonard a smile from the edges of her eyes. "But she might make me brownies."

"Brownies are an acceptable substitute, I guess," he said, then looked up like he was thinking of something. "Will they have something in them? Like chocolate chips or chunks of peanut butter or something?"

Considering Aerith's vaguely hippy tendencies, most people could make an assumption about what she'd put in brownies. Leonard's guessing game was better though and Tifa hide a silent laugh behind a ducked head and her hand.

"I can ask for one of those if you'd like." They'd been talking about her but it wasn't as if she'd forgotten. "It's only fair you get to share some. You're in here for a friend too."

McCoy shook his head. "Jim knows he's making up for this properly. Bottle of Wild Turkey and next time, he's gonna be the one in here." He glanced at her sidelong, then his lips twitched up. "But if one of those brownies breaks and you can't eat it because it's no good ... "

She probably should have frowned on underage drinking but Tifa was already, in secret to save herself some embarrassment, working on learning drink mixes. She already knew she wasn't going to make it to college, too little money, grades too average and bar tending paid good and would give her her days off. And she'd be mortified if anyone found out. Hopefully by reunion time, she'd have the beginnings of her own bar and grill going though. 'Nice' girls weren't supposed to dream of being bartenders. So instead she smiled back, shaking her head.

"Don't drink it all at once and I think I could find some broken brownies for you."

He smirked a little. "It's a deal." After a moment, he stuck out his hand, a silent suggestion that they shake on it. And who knew? If the broken brownies she got him were good enough, he might be able to find a shot or two of Wild Turkey to spare for her. Share and share alike, or something like that.

The handshake was new but it brought another smile to her eyes and she reached out to catch his larger hand in hers. It was a nice, firm grip, the kind her dad had taught her meant someone was honest and whether she believed that or not usually, she thought it was probably close to the truth this time around.

"Deal." She gave his hand a squeeze. "And thanks - for keeping me company in here."

His smile flashed, brief but honest, as he dropped his hand. "If I'd known the company in detention would've been as good as it is, I don't think I'd have made Jim buy the top-shelf stuff."

"Well, don't tell him." It was easy to tease. After all, Leonard had still ended up here whether the company was good or not and it was still his friend's fault. She knew she was sure going to take advantage of Aerith's repentance. "And next time make sure you run faster than he does."

McCoy rolled his eyes. "It's not like he's gonna stick around to see if the guy he just clocked has a concussion or not. Kids are stupid; he'd probably just go home and fall asleep and wake up dead."

Well, that had been a lot worse than whatever it was she'd vaguely assumed Jim had done. "Is the other kid okay?"

Not that she approved of violence but it if was going to happen, it needed to be done in a way that didn't permanently hurt anyone. Brawls were generally over stupid things and it was a lousy way to start your trip into adulthood by doing something that was going to haunt you the rest of your life during one of them. As someone on the martial arts team, she was serious when she asked: "Does Jim need someone to teach him how to hit the right way?"

"Yeah, he's fine. Kinda banged up from knocking into the lockers as hard as he did, but no permanent damage." At Tifa's question, he glanced over at her, brows lifting in surprise. "You offering to teach him?"

Crossing her arms, she sat back in her seat a little, brows coming down while her lips thinned out. The thing was that the better you were at fighting, the less you were supposed to do it. Teaching Jim to fight could backfire and just make him worse and he was already a cannon that could get dangerously loose sometimes. If he learned to fight right though he could learn how to take someone down without risking killing them. They were just kids, walking around in halfway formed adult bodies. Someone had to show him a different way before he really did put someone in the hospital and end up thrown out of school or worse. Jim might not think he had a future worth protecting but Tifa didn't like giving up on anyone and Jim was a genuinely good guy when he wasn't being stupid. Leonard knew him much better than she did though and so she looked at him as she asked:

"Should I?"

McCoy looked conflicted. Clearly, he was thinking much along the same lines as Tifa had been: if you give a dumbass a big gun, chances are good that something's going to end up with a big hole in it before too long. But Jim did get into fights, and if it meant McCoy spent less time in detention because he couldn't just let someone go without being checked ...

"Couldn't hurt. At least make the offer."

aw, thank you. My voice has finally stopped squeaking on every other syllable so I'm getting better

"I suppose I could. With stipulations." Maybe having a focus would help calm Jim down. He always seemed so - restless to her. As if he wanted to do something with his life but couldn't figure out what. She could understand that. They were just kids and a lot of them had no idea what they wanted to do when they graduated but Jim always seemed - more driven than that. As if he had to prove something but he didn't know what. Watching Leonard's face, she asked:

"Do you think he'd stick to the rules if I told him I'd only teach him if he did?" And more to the point, her eyebrows arches a little. "Do you think he'd let a girl teach him about fighting?"

"'Course he'd let a girl teach him, as long as she wasn't wasting his time." A beat, and McCoy added, "And you'd probably have to frame it in a way that didn't emasculate him or whatever. Don't tell him it's for his own good."

Male ego was still alive and kicking so she really liked the way Leonard immediately dismissed the idea of a girl teaching a boy to fight as unusual. Franky, she didn't even know if he'd ever seen her fight since she did most of that at meets. It was still a nice vote of confidence and she leaned forward on her desk again to listen to the rest, dark eyes going thoughtful, even as her lips quirked on their side at 'for his own good'. It wasn't as if she and Jim had had more than a few sentences in passing their entire time at the school. Just up and suddenly offering to teach him how to hit without killing someone would seem strange. She worried at her lower lip for a minute before looking up at Leonard.

"What if it was in trade? I could get some help with something and so I'd offer to help him out in turn?"

"You be careful what you offer Jim Kirk in a trade," Leonard warned her, lips twisting slightly. "Be sure it can't be construed as a date in any way, shape or else he will take you up on it."

It - felt kind of nice that Leonard immediately went to cut off any date idea. For all he knew she did want a date with Jim.

except of course she didn't. Not her type at all. Instead she scooted a little closer to the guy next to her and watched him from the tops of her eyes. It was a silly idea but -

"What if it was for help with Algebra?"

Leonard's brow furrowed. "Just make sure you don't let him arrange it at his place ... unless you want him to." He glanced over at Tifa, and he wasn't sure if she'd scooted closer to him or if he was just imagining things. "And I mean, if you do, then I guess that's your call."

She stifled the smile and asked:

"What about your place?"

His mouth opened.

Leonard's brows drew in over his eyes like large dark angry caterpillars being prodded with tiny cattle prods as he tried to figure this out.

"Why are you having a study session with Jim at my house?"

oh those poor caterpillars!

Tifa watched him go through the entire process without offering anything but a smile and a vaguely curious expression. When she was sure he was done, at least for the moment, she explained:

"I'm not. I don't know him well but I really don't think Jim would be a good tutor. I don't think he'd... concentrate on the right thing. But - if you wanted to - you could help me with Algebra. And then I could teach Jim to fight. And then you wouldn't have to keep trying to cover his butt. If it works and he stops, I mean." Because to her that was what the problem with the whole situation was, not the study session at all. "I mean, I know you don't get as much out of it as we do but maybe it would be worth it?"
