Whenever...
- the full moon rises,
- the clock strikes midnight,
- that time of the month begins,
- you lose control of your emotions,
- you see someone in danger,
- you want it to happen,
- you find yourself acting selfishly,
- some trigger that you decide comes to fruition,
you turn into a(n)...
- werewolf, complete with shedding fur and pack dynamics, if that's your thing.
- vampire, which makes looking in the mirror to get ready for the day impossible.
- kelpie, a fan favorite for all the former horse girls out there.
- ghost, and it this new social media trend of being 'ghosted' has got nothing on the real thing.
- merperson, and you're really tired of hearing fish puns.
- fae, with Tinkerbell representing your entire species.
- alien, or something equally out of this world.
- dryad, and everyone loves a cool, nature-based creature!
- naga, and, no, snake-charming will not work on you.
- angel, with a halo that stays on mostly straight.
- kraken, which isn't the death sentence it used to be given how many people love their tentacle creatures.
- arachne, which is it's own kind of nightmare for those who fear spiders.
- demon, and you don't spend as much time hanging around on strangers' shoulders as people think.
- a different creature, and that only makes life harder for you.
This has been the case ever since...
- you were a child.
- you turned eighteen.
- you disobeyed that one golden rule.
- you were bitten by that creature.
- you were cursed.
- today. Ever since today. This is some new shit.
- you were killed and brought back to life in this new form.
- this was foretold in a vision.
- you have no idea; this just sort of happened.
- you discovered that you're the chosen one.
- some other AU backstory you feel like dreaming up.
And, to make matters worse,
- transformation is an incredibly difficult/painful/awkward process.
- you have a taste for human flesh/blood.
- this is the first time that anything like this has ever happened, and you're so confused and concerned!
- the wrong person has spotted you in this monstrous form.
- you've fallen in love with a human.
- you've fallen in love with a rival monster species.
- you're stuck this way until true love's kiss breaks the spell.
- you're stuck this way until you learn how to be a good person.
- a new monster superpower is making life difficult for you.
- you're having trouble blending in.
- you can only come out at night/during the day.
- you have to fulfill someone's wish in order to change back into a human.
- certain foods make you extremely ill.
- you're horny, but monstrously so.
- you're having trouble controlling your monstrous inclinations.
- some different sort of trouble.

eddie munson — stranger things
no numbers I do what I want
Well. Maybe he should back up a little bit.
Alec's mostly an introvert. He enjoys a quiet evening with a good book, not a wild club scene with loud music. Unfortunately demons and some unscrupulous Downworlders love the wild club scene, because it makes for easy victims. So he'd let Izzy drag him out in the thin excuse that they just needed to check things out, to keep people safe.
She'd promptly abandoned him to go flirt and dance, leaving Alec awkwardly hanging near the bar with a drink he doesn't even want.
A drink that a gorgeous guy comes along and plucks out of his hand, finishing it while dark eyes stay locked on Alec's. But the Angel he's captivating with that smile and that laugh and the way he wrinkles up his nose when Alec's attempts at flirting back fall completely flat. Alec balks when the guy suggests dancing but lets him instead take him by the hand and drag him out to the parking lot where they climb onto the roof of a beat up van and talk and laugh and it's going so well that of course it can't last because Alec can't have nice things.
The guy had put a hand on Alec's thigh and the adamas dagger he had sheathed there shone brightly through the glamour Alec had put on it to make it invisible. It leaves him staring open mouthed at his companion, because the gorgeous guy clearly isn't fully human and Alec's not sure what he's just gotten himself into.]
What—
[What are you seems like a rude question, one Alec bites back. But now he in it, isn't he?]
fuck yeah i like that energy
His kind generally does not mingle with Shadowhunters, but they do not typically come to a club like this, either. Instead, they prefer to keep to themselves, far removed from the politics that keep the world from tearing itself apart. Eddie has never been one to play by the rules, though, and it's oh-so-easy for him to blend in.
Tonight, Eddie plays the role of the victim, pretending to be a mortal and a mundane, walking with the confidence of someone who knows not a single Downworlder can touch him should they come close enough to get the chance. When he spots Alec, Eddie knows precisely what he wants, even if it puts his own life in danger.
When Alec discovers he is not human, he may vanquish first and ask questions later.
They make it to the roof of his van, and the night is going pleasantly, all things considered. Then Eddie feels the shift in the air as Alec's dagger warns him that he is not the helpless victim Alec might have first thought him to be. )
Not a threat.
( Just because the Fair Folk cannot lie does not mean they have to answer directly. Besides, Alec did not technically finish his question, but Eddie could tell where this was headed. )
no subject
[The problem is, now what? They're still here on the roof of the guy's van, still far too close, and Alec's not sure what to do next. He's especially not sure what to do when the guy is still just as gorgeous as he was before he'd touched Alec, when he was leaning in close to— what? Flirt? Kiss Alec? Something more? Something else?]
What do you want with me?
no subject
When he stepped foot in this club, Eddie hadn't expected to be so taken by Alec. The Shadowhunter is beautiful, and Eddie only wishes he had more time before Alec learned the truth.
What do you want with me? )
What does anyone want when they buy a handsome guy a drink?
( He drops his glamour so Alec can see him as he truly is, pointy ears and all. He hopes he's making the right choice by trusting Alec. Besides, it's not like he's breaking the Accords. He just hopes he doesn't end up scaring Alec off this way. )
I'm sorry I was not quite so...forthright. A guy's gotta blend in, you know?
no subject
[Partly because Alec doesn't enjoy the club scene, doesn't come out for a night on the town. Besides, who's going to hit on Alec when Izzy or Jace are around? He's not exactly a catch.
Alec looks down at his lap, then up again when the glamour drops. He hesitates a moment before pulling out his stele and dropping his own glamour.]
Yeah. Yeah, I guess so. I get the not wanting to be noticed thing.
no subject
It's a good look. But it does make you stand out among the Mundanes.
( He frowns, his gaze drifting from Alec's in regret. )
Sometimes I wish I didn't have to. Alas, the Clave dictates and I wouldn't want to scare the Mundanes.
( Even though Eddie means no harm - he finds Mundanes fascinating. Perhaps the only thing he finds more intriguing is the Shadowhunter sitting beside him. )
I feel like perhaps we should start over. I'm Edward, Eddie for short.
( He extends a hand for Alec to shake. )
no subject
Yeah. Yeah it's... necessary. [Does Alec sound a little regretful? Absolutely. But it's not his place to change entire laws that have held for years.] And me? Do you want to scare me?
[He doesn't think so though. But Alec's interested, because why in the world is this beautiful fae interested in talking with him? He's got no idea. But he is enjoying the quiet out here much more than the chaos in the club.]
Yeah. We can do that. [He takes the hand on his own. Alec's handshake is firm, his hands calloused.] I'm Alec.
no subject
When Alec shakes his hand, Eddie can feel a shiver run down his spine. He doesn't want to let go of Alec's hand, but if they are trying to start over, he needs to tone things down, lest he end up scaring Alec away. )
Alec. A pleasure to meet you.
( It sounds too casual for what Eddie already longs to do with this man. But he knows he needs to take his time and gain Alec's trust first if there is any hope of seeing this last past tonight. )
Can I buy you a drink? Or...did you want to stay out here, where it's quieter?
( And more intimate. Where Eddie can do things like gaze into Alec's eyes without the piercing sound of club music giving him a headache. )
no subject
I'm happy to meet you too.
[Which sounds so lame, truly. Especially considering he'd thought that Eddie had been leaning in for a kiss when this whole thing started.]
I kind of like it out here. Is that okay?
[It's quieter; they can talk without shouting, and without the press of bodies around them. And out here it feels like he can have Eddie all to himself.]
no subject
That is more than okay.
( He smiles almost shyly as he slides a little closer. He has heard of others of his kind having Shadowhunters as lovers, but none of the stories compare to being in Alec's presence. He feels...safe. Like no other Downworlder could get to them so long as Alec is here. )
You are quite captivating, you know. From the moment I saw you in there, I knew I had to get to know you.
no subject
I'm glad. I'm not really one for the club scene.
[Quiet conversation though? Alec's all in. Especially if Eddie's going to be so... well, refreshing. It's kind of nice to talk with someone who's not a Shadowhunter, or Alec's sibling, or both.]
I... [Alec trails off, cheeks hot. He's not the one who gets noticed, the one anyone wants to get to know. He's a little flustered with the compliments. But God, Eddie is gorgeous, and he thinks Alec's the captivating one?!? Alec doesn't know what to do with that.] Um, I mean... I'd like to know you too.
no subject
Then let us talk. Preferably about something not related to...
( He gestures around them, keeping his voice hushed. He doubts Alec wants to talk about Shadowhunter business any more than Eddie wants to talk about his court. )
Tell me, what does a Shadowhunter do when he isn't protecting Mundanes?
no subject
[A polite euphemism for the world outside this little bubble they've created on top of the van. Alex mind of wants to ask if Eddie owns it, or is borrowing it, or somehow just has claim to it for the night. The interior might give them a good place to retreat if they decide they don't want to be in the open. Right now though the night air is nice, and Alec shifts a little closer to Eddie.]
He gets dragged out to clubs by his siblings, apparently. It's not really a scene I enjoy.
[There's a little bit of embarrassment in the admission, because Eddie found him in the club. But if he hadn't come out tonight they might not have met.]
Tonight though, I don't think I mind it.
no subject
Oh yeah? You don't?
( Alec's admission causes Eddie to grin widely, a slight glint of fangs visible in his current form. )
I'm not much of a club guy myself; I mostly come here to people-watch. I think I lucked out tonight, though. I usually leave empty-handed.
no subject
Yeah. Makes me pretty weird I guess.
[But this isn't bad at all. Eddie's interesting, and attractive. And apparently interested enough in Alec to abandon the club readily. He probably could have gotten some good people watching in if he'd stayed.]
You're not afraid that I'm bad luck instead of good?

I ain't even gonna apologize for this fight me
Then again, it's not like Eddie's not used to keeping secrets. He's got a doozy of his own, after all.
It's why he's fiddling with a cigarette when Steve gets ready to dive over the side of their boat, fiddling because of the secret and because he's running out of time to, well, handle his little secret. He knew he should've gone for a swim earlier. He thought he'd have more time.
It's also why, when Steve doesn't come back up, Eddie convinces Nancy and Robin that it's in their best interests if he goes overboard next. He's a strong swimmer (they look like they don't believe him) and if something happens to him too, they're the ones with all the information so far, they've got to stay safe (at least they believe that). It leads to him shedding most of his clothes and going over the edge before they can mount more of a protest, nodding at them once before ducking under the water's surface to search out Steve.
Fortunately it's mostly dark out, and he doesn't have to dive too far before he lets the transformation take over. He kicks off the boxers as gills flare, legs fusing to a single, scaly appendage. He takes just a moment to revel in the feeling of water and wet before opening his eyes and diving down into the depths, swimming faster and stronger than a human could to find Steve. It'll blow his own secret wide open but Steve's been down here for far too long and in the light of a possible drowning, what does it matter that Eddie's a merman?
Of course, Eddie's not exactly expecting what he sees when he does comes across Steve at the bottom of the lake...
what a wonderful gift
He just doesn't expect what he finds in the depths of Lover's Lake. It's a gate, all right, and once Steve transforms, he can take his time searching for a way in. If he doesn't surface soon, though, the others will be suspicious.
The Upside Down has other plans for him, however. As he prepares to shoot up to the surface and transform back, a vine wraps around his arm and starts dragging him towards the opening. No, he has to fight, he can't go through the portal without alerting the others first.
Before he can free himself, Steve hears movement nearby. It's too big to be a fish, and Steve doesn't know any other sea creatures that could wind up in this lake, so he gets ready to defend himself...
...only to come face-to-face with Eddie Munson, who is facing a similar predicament.
Watch out! he motions with a pointing index finger towards the vines, seeming to slither their way through the portal just as the vine pulls with such a great force he feels somewhat like a fish being reeled in on a fishing line. There is only one thing for him to do, then, and that is brace himself for impact on the dry expanse of the Upside Down version of Lover's Lake.
❤️
But he hadn't expected Steve to ruin that big surprise by having a surprise of his own. Eddie stops dead in the water when he sees Steve, shock on his face at the sight. It's probably that disbelief that slows him down, the vibes wrapping more firmly around Steve and pulling. Eddie surges forward through the water, hands outstretched, but barely manages to graze Steve's fingertips before Steve is ripped away.
Fuck. Does he follow? Or does he head for the surface to warn the girls?
If he doesn't warm the girls, will they come after him?
He swims for the surface as fast as he can. It still takes far too long, but he's got a pocket knife in his pants and that's something. At least Nancy listens about the gate and has the idea to find another one; Eddie grabs the knife and heads right back down to help Steve. He knows it's not enough, but what else can he do but dive through the gate himself?
no subject
Instead, once the bright light from the impact of spine against asphalt subsides, Steve is faced with a hellish sight, the tentacle dragging him across the ground while bats bearing long tails circle around like hawks. Steve might be far bigger than the smaller fish that a hawk might normally consider prey, but that doesn't stop these bats from trying to make Steve into their next meal. Still stuck in this form, his tail flops helplessly, trying to get him away to safety until he can think of his next move. Without water, the gills on either side of his neck flop just as uselessly. He needs to focus on transforming back, and he needs to do it now.
It's no use. He needs concentration, and with the tentacle around his neck and the bats beginning to dive, he starts to see the writing on the wall. If Eddie doesn't come back, Steve won't survive much longer.
no subject
It occurs to him almost too late that his pocket knife probably isn't enough. It's not like they're much that's useful on the lakebed though; about all Eddie can do is grab a rock before diving through the gate.
And nearly losing his breath, because he's not expecting the dryness.
Gravity and momentum work against Eddie, sending him hurtling to the ground. But at least it interrupts the things diving at Steve, which is good, right? The impact knocks the wind out of Eddie and it hurts like a bitch, but all he can think is to crawl his way to Steve at any cost. He tries bashing that tentacle around Steve's neck with the rock, anything to get it away from Steve.
no subject
And then suddenly, the tentacle releases him and retreats. Steve's eyes widen as he sees Eddie in all his glory, brandishing the rock that saved his life. He takes a moment to stare at Eddie in shock, not expecting him to follow. When he notices it's just Eddie, he knows they have to get out of here, and fast. Which means...
He struggles to transform back into a human, thankful that he can do so at will. It's not a terribly painful process, though splitting his tail to form his legs always makes him feel strange and vulnerable afterward. However, that could also be because he isn't wearing any clothes.
"We have to get out of here." He glances down at himself, and immediately, his cheeks flush as he tries to quickly cover himself up. "Uh. Clothes. We need to find clothes. And fast."
no subject
Feeling Steve transform next to him is also a whole thing, because how had he not known there was another creature like him in Hawkins? Eddie takes a deep breath and forces his own transformation, laying as naked as Steve on the hard ground. Vulnerable together, and not just because of the danger in their surroundings.
"Yeah," he agrees, gaze flicking over Steve before pointedly looking away. God, this is the worst. "Fuck, I thought this would be a lake. Not, you know, this."
no subject
"Yeah. So did I," Steve admits, furrowing his brow. He hears the sound of some creature - probably more of those bat things, and the wounds on his abdomen start to throb as he tenses up in fear. "We don't have much time to worry about that, though; we can't stay here any longer.
He frowns, unsure of where to even go from here. If Lover's Lake didn't exist as a lake here, what else was wrong about this place? "My place isn't that far from here. Probably our best bet for finding clothes." Assuming that a replica of his clothes existed in this dimension, of course.
no subject
At least Steve has a plan, and a decent one at that. Eddie also doesn't know how this landscape will hold up to the one he knows, but the trailer isn't really close to the lake. If Steve's place is closer, they're much better for it. "Yeah, that sounds good."
Eddie will just ignore everything about the idea of wearing Steve's clothes. Beggars can't be choosers, and anything is better than nothing.
He gets to his feet somewhat gingerly; he really is bruised up. But Steve's in worse shape, even if athletically speaking he's far better off. Eddie offers him a hand up before he can really think about it. Anything that can help them get moving is worth the effort as far as he's concerned.
"Which way?"
