THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

She'll just have to control herself, get through their game matches without going nuts, and wait for it to pass. She can't just say she got sick out of nowhere! ...even if it's kind of true.

Thus, whenever he arrives at her modest rowhouse, to which she's given him his own key, she's sulking on the couch and trying to look more distracted by her phone and the pizza she's nibbling on than, well, the pheromones running rampant off her. ]

Any sort of rut cycle can easily be tied to his being half Saiyajin instead of A/B/O being commonplace worldwide, particularly if you plan on playing your character as a Beta. I tend to prefer playing in settings with as few alterations to canon as possible even when merging canons, so I figured I'd put the option out there.

That being said, I'd be completely open to any pairing/match-up (a/a, a/b, or a/o). ]

Harold is an exceptionally strong alpha. This is not a fact he enjoys, appreciates, or is proud of. Mostly it's quite annoying, because his scrupulous ethics drive him to keep it as tightly wrapped up as possible lest he unwittingly influence someone into appeasing him. It'd taken years of quiet investment to finally prod someone into developing alpha suppressants, and now Harold in one of his alternate identities is the owner and financier of the sole producer. He deliberately sells them at a loss -- not that there's much demand -- because he has strong feelings about access to secondary sex-affirming medications.

And, of course, he takes them himself. Harold spends most of his days slinking through Shinra buildings as quiet tech support, demure and nervous if ever addressed directly. His whole body language reads omega, and lack of pheromones otherwise is usually sufficient to convince others to dismiss him entirely.

He prefers it that way. He hates attention, he severely dislikes almost everyone who is in positions of power these days, and he much prefers orchestrating his machinations behind the scenes. Harold lives a solitary and lonely life where he tries to painstakingly chip away at his regrets by saving one life at a time. His success rate isn't fantastic, but that's not really the point. He keeps trying, and he keeps his day job as Shinra tech support for cover.

There is just one rather significant problem with said cover. He keeps catching scent of an omega in suppressed distress in the hallways and around corners. At first it's not too challenging to ignore, but being strong as an alpha comes with correspondingly strong instincts, and for Harold they've always oriented around stepping in and taking care of things. He wants things to be right, to be fair and correct and kind, and every time he gets a trace of those pheromones the urge to fix something that's wrong builds a little further into an unbearable, tenacious itch.

Eventually he realizes who the source of it is. It's hard to hide truths from Harold Finch: he's astute, everyone overlooks him, and he's dived deep into Shinra databases on several occasions. So he does, ultimately, realize that who he's been getting traces of is Sephiroth.

"Oh, dear," he mutters to himself when the epiphany hits, a bit poleaxed. What is he supposed to do about that? The reasons he's on suppressants are supremely obvious. Harold would have to be arrogant in the extreme to think it's even his place to do something about it, not to mention, well, indecorous. The age difference alone... although probably he should be thinking about the power differential in the other direction, he reflects wryly. Sephiroth could squash him with a flick of a finger. He's an aging nerd with mobility challenges.

Somehow that's not what he's thinking of, though. He's in distress and probably no one else can tell, or if they can tell they don't care. Maybe he's never run into an alpha as strong as he is an omega, able to read through the medications? There's a multitude of possible explanations but they all add up to one probable truth: the world's most terrifying alpha is an omega no one is looking after.

It's offensive. It rubs Harold the wrong way like sandpaper against his skin. He can't stop thinking about it once he realizes, limping to and from work stations on his bad leg clutching his computer, in character as Harold Martin, hapless tech support, now trying to catch furtive glimpses of the man in question when he can. He knows himself; he knows he can't stop fussing over a problem once he's latched onto it, and he can't leave someone in need, someone he has reason to believe no one else will ever help.

This is exactly how he got into the present situation he's in, but some things never change. So Harold makes a plan. It takes some time to set up: he has to wait for his company to develop a suppressant reverser (for himself, of course) and he has to get his fingers into the Shinra surveillance systems to ensure he can create an absolutely private space for the conversation. Then he has to hack into Sephiroth's schedule and orchestrate a time, place and reason to run into him. It all has to line up smoothly.

But Harold, alpha as he is, will not allow compromise in this.
