like a fight meme, but less physical and more loud.
![]() ARGUMENTS/VENTING MEME Sometimes you're so pissed off that you just can't keep it in. Or you're upset, frustrated, sad - whatever is causing it, it's time for an outburst. Whether you're in a two-sided argument, a one-sided ripping apart of someone else, or just an old man yelling at a cloud (or your friend, who is patiently pretending to listen and agreeing once in a while for appearances), you have to get it out before it explodes from inside you. Be careful, though: what's going to happen in the aftermath? Is a friendship or relationship irreparably broken or can you get through it stronger for the experience? Does your venting session help you or make things worse? |

it's not that any of that comes as a surprise. she misrepresented herself in order to gain access to a starfleet vessel: they're not going to let her just go back on shift and go about her business. someone has to take over her shifts and her projects and all of her patient notes which at least, she consoles herself, are completely up to date. no one can criticise her actual work, although at this point she's sort of wishing she'd overlooked something that they'd have to ask her about so she could do literally anything other than sit in interminable debriefings, questioned backwards and forwards, somewhere between political prisoner and diplomatic advisor.
when she isn't confined to her quarters, which have been disconnected from nearly all forms of useful communication, where she is pretty sure she may actually quietly lose her mind before ithaca ii even reaches out.
she has been on her best behaviour. she has been patient. she has been polite. she has measured every word and not snapped or complained or objected,
but the stupid, stupid idea that she'd had is becoming ever more patently absurd to her and as the hope of a real career slips through her fingers, that calm is getting harder to reach for. to hold onto. it is getting harder to bite her tongue when she wants to say something unfair, and when the latest conversation ends with disconnection she slumps backwards in her chair involuntarily, her mouth set in a moue of petulance she wouldn't be proud of if she were aware of it, exhaling hard.
she doesn't look sideways. she also doesn't get up immediately, which is a departure from her early eagerness to cooperate, yes sir, no sir, on her feet before the disconnection has fully separated, ready to return to her quarters and twiddle her fucking thumbs while people above her paygrade (she is not getting paid any more) figure out how to untangle the information and its implications (including the several other agents she'd named specifically—).
she will. in a second. )

it had helped somewhat, turning that 115/120 into 120/135, but the continued stress is not great. for anyone. he's snappish and waspish when provoked in any way, and the professionalism has worn so thin that people close enough to him can see it fraying at the edges.
the admiralty is, as predicted, on his ass like a fly on shit and he's being watched like a hawk. he's glad the rest of the crew isn't being implicated as negligent, but it's a lot of pressure to bear, especially when spock's logical arguments as to why any 'lapse in judgment' isn't entirely jim's fault are fully ignored.
all of this over the fact that a single person got into starfleet under false pretenses and served under him. it's not on command for letting her enlist in the first place, it's on jim for being her superior. apparently. it's strange, to an extent, how hard they're coming down on this. harder than even he anticipated, like they're looking for a particular scapegoat. people sneak into starfleet all the time. what's the real fucking issue here?
he is, frankly, trying his best with the hand he's been dealt, but he can see the cards fluttering out of his hands every time he tries to put down so much as a pair of threes on the table. he has at least kept his grasp on command, however tenuous it may be, and he is playing everything by the book so they see no further reason to rip him from his chair.
jim is also no longer the one asking gwen questions. he's sat next to her instead of across, getting grilled as well, and there's no way she can't see those loose threads in his patience at her side.
he doesn't get up. he doesn't move except to drop his head back over the edge of the chair after the disconnect, taking a slow breath and scrubbing his face with both hands. ]
Fuck.
[ jim does not, generally speaking, use the eff-word. that's mccoy's job.
he doesn't stay sitting long though, getting up and pacing the length of the room like he does when he's trying to figure something out. he does this every goddamn time now and he never comes up with anything. he knows the pacing is obnoxious and pointless. that doesn't stop him.
spock will be coming to collect them soon. collect gwen, mostly, but also to shove jim in mccoy's direction for another round of sedatives. 155/175 hours awake at this point. not good numbers.
he does, in fact, seem like he might either implode or explode at any moment. it just depends in which way the mood strikes him. ]

[ Something about his effortless and seemingly endless optimism and facade of youthful innocence has a way of getting those who would not ordinarily be open or forthcoming to be so without necessarily intending.
He scritches the chin of his cerebus and tilts his head encouragingly.] Not that their feelings should be your responsibility.

Oddly a bit of a difficult answer. Yes, but also no. Though I suppose a bit more yes - I find them that way, they don't always find me with it. Traditionally, most are afraid to bring it to my doorstep and it hasn't turned out great for those who have.
