What am I doing? Oh, nothing. Not a single thing. I’m certainly not rifling through a bunch of photos in my pocket-

[1] Someone strapped a sign on your character that tells the whole wide world what they're weak for, what gets them biting their lip, blushing, weak at the knees, all that. Whether it's a specific person's name or particular words/actions (calling her a good girl, touching his neck, kissing their forehead), there's no difference in the end. They're exposed either way.
[2] All that matters is everyone can see it.
[3] That's it.

Could you explain your world and what about its nature corrupts? That is a very vague statement without those data points.

That could be a lecture series. But we're cutthroat, venal, insular, parochial. And so many of us actually believe it's going to take us to... heaven.

[ Can't talk about the Root to outsiders, but the way people use it as justification is pretty much the same... ]

Ruri nods, though her voice deadpan, her eyes show understanding.

"I've dealt with the Jovian military, that sounds like them. Doubly so if going after singularity technology that will save or control humanity."

With that she just sighs slightly.

We don't care in the least about humanity at large one way or the other, but the belief in a great, all-consuming destiny is there.

Honestly, they didn't either. They just wanted the power. But that doesn't sound good when put on a recruitment poster.

When I get there I'll tell you my opinion on which is worse.
