Rabbit Done Died Meme

"The rabbit died" is an old saying meaning one is pregnant, coming from the now no longer practiced rabbit test.

Congratulations!

You're pregnant. Knocked up. Eating for two. Have a bun in the oven.
Insert your own cliched phrase here. No matter how you say it, you're
downright fertilized. Even if you're not typically in possession of a
womb, somehow it happened. Are you scared? Happy? Gassy? A combination
of everything? And who's the father, anyway?

1. Post with your character with their name and series in the subject line. If
you want to avoid any of the options, this would also be a good place to
list them.
2. This is one of those RNG memes, so you'll want to go to our good friend Random Number Generator and roll 1-6 for how far along you are. Or just pick what one you'd prefer.
3. If you're replying to someone, roll 1-4 for how you factor into this madness!

So, how far along are you anyway?

1. Two months - Sooooo all this sickness is kind of annoying, isn't it? At least you can still fit in your old clothes, right?

2. Four months - Okay, so things are getting a little tight. Time to break out the flowy stuff!

3. Six months - OH MY GOD IT'S AN ALI-- oh, no. It's just the baby moving. Although it's still kind of creepy, isn't it?

4. Eight months - Please. Please let it be over. Have mercy.

5. Overdue - C'mon kid! I'll buy you a pony! NO! TWO PONIES! My baaaaaack.

6. Wildcard - Your choice!

What's your role in this whole mess, person replying?

1. YOU ARE THE FATHER - Well, now you've gone and done it. Are you going to take responsibility, or head for the hills?

2. Friend - You may not have done the deed, but you're going to be there to help your buddy. No matter HOW weird the circumstances!

3. Enemy - Do you feel a 'HAW HAW' coming on? This is just too funny.

4. Wildcard - Second verse, same as the first.

Not my meme. Shamelessly copied!

"Well, it seems like your genes run strong," Aaron told her. Honestly, he wasn't sure how Cassie had inherited the self-combustion and the teleporting thing from her mother -- as far as Aaron was concerned, he was merely human. Shouldn't his genetic makeup, artificially forged or no, win out? "I take it you dabbled with less-than-human friends."

Kay grinned, still looking at him sidelong. She knew better… but maybe she'd test the waters. "Whenever I talk about old boyfriends you get this put-out look," she said, rather than offering a yes or no answer.

"That's because the last one nearly threw me out a seventh-story window with the power of his brain alone," Aaron told her quite straight-forwardly. "Not to mention, he's the only one -- I hope -- I'll ever have to worry about contending with in the same time and place."

"He probably is," she offered as comfort to the blonde, crossing her hands over her belly again. "Certainly you'd never have to meet anyone else I was serious with." That is to say, anyone she'd had children with... but she wasn't going to push it, and there was always a part of her that shied away from the pain of dead mates.

Still, she was curious about his curiosity. "You've never asked before, though."

"You've never seemed that eager to talk about your past," he shrugged, "and you never inquire about mine, so I try to keep things even. I mean... we've had plenty of good times together as it is, and we've found lots to do without digging up old news." He shrugged. "I do wonder, sometimes, but I think that might just be a side effect of wanting to get to know you and your megabiography."

She gave a good-natured snort at his creative word use, but more than anything she seemed satisfied for some nebulous reason. "I don't ask because I know I'll apparently find out eventually, because I don't want or like spoilers. You, though…" She turned her head and looked at him properly, quirking a brow. "If anyone's earned the right to ask, it's you."

"Well, you won't be hurt if I do?" he wanted to know. Even besides the hormonal soup Kay had running through her veins right now, he wasn't sure that he ought to be dredging up anything old. He'd caught her oddly nostalgic, hurt sort of reactions, no matter how small they might be.

"Aaron, if you're going to ask about people I've loved in the past, I might be," she told him plainly, "but not because you asked. It's not really a kind of hurt that ever totally goes away." She couldn't help but shoot a glance in the direction of the playroom Cassie had retreated to, where they could still hear her getting up to some benign shenanigans or other. She looked back to him. "Doesn't mean you can't ask."

"Hmm," he considered, feeling a bit out of place now that she was offering. "I hadn't really thought to ask in a way that wouldn't sound like I was fishing for statistics." He'd long since gotten over the phase that he'd begun to think of as misinformed research. Finally, he shrugged. "What's a favourite memory of yours, about kids, I mean?"

She'd been ready enough to let the issue lie, though there was a part of her that she was finding strangely eager to share. He already knew so much about her future, he was the first of her human lovers that'd started playing her own temporal game -- after a fashion she yearned for the connection.

When he asked she grinned at the question, unexpected as such. "Oh, god, that's... okay, uh." She leaned her head back again, examining the ceiling as she considered. "That's a hard one. There are a lot of things that probably deserve to be on that list. Well...

"I had a little boy, a long time ago," she started, waving her hands in sort of a general descriptive manner. "He was, that one was pretty well mundane human, and you know I think somehow without meaning to I've finagled this body to tie in how magical they are to hair colour? Anyways he was a dark little thing, but he was a loudmouth, too -- he just didn't have the shit to back it up, but his big brother did and everyone we lived around at that point knew that my eldest was a mean scrapper, but my little guy hadn't gotten into any fights he couldn't talk himself out of yet.

"Anyways, of course he had to be a badass too -- that kind of culture, that kind of time and place -- so inevitably he got into a fight. Well -- I mean, almost. What actually happened was he bluffed the other guy down, scared the shit out of him without lifting a finger. I managed to catch the tail-end of it, and I've never seen a better bluff since. I don't think I've been prouder... well.

"But hell, Aaron," she looked entreatingly at the man, "he was still so young. I mean it was kind of a dog-eat-dog world at the time, but he was just -- just about Cassie's age actually. Maybe five. Too little. He came home and cried because he'd been so scared."

The elemental squeezed her eyes shut and brought the heels of her palms up to her eyes, rubbing fiercely. It was different, thinking of the specifics than it had been telling him in the general. "Oh, hell," she said, voice a bit thick, and then a bit small. "I miss him. I miss all of them."

At that point, there was nothing he could do but give her a tight squeeze. "Hey, it's alright," he told her. "You know, in a way, being around to remember them gives them a sort of longer life span than most individuals get."

She had to laugh at that, though it was a wet thing and not a happy laugh. "Except for the part where they're actually dead," she countered, "and you know what, it's easier to recollect the recent ones than the earlier ones. Even I forget things."

There was no real way to know whether or not the ones she remembered were the only ones she had ever had, either, but that was too bleak to bring up. Instead she half-turned, wrapped her arms around him tightly. "I keep hoping just one will inherit whatever it is that keeps me alive," she admitted to him quietly.

The implications that that simple statement bred were vast enough that the blonde could only squeeze her close. "You or Astren or Joey ever seen that happen?" he asked.
ktfe: (Default)

[personal profile] ktfe 2012-03-15 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not that I know of," she admitted, "though I'm the only one who, who does this kind of thing really ever." The elemental patted her belly. "I guess I don't even really know that it's possible."

The blonde made a noise of mild surprise. Here he'd thought that Kay and her friends were more alike in their games of life. "Ever asked Astren about it?" he wanted to know. "She seems to know all about keeping things growing."

"No!" Kay exclaimed, frowning fiercely. She sighed, though, and shook her head, venting off some of the bad feeling there and explaining to Aaron in a subdued tone, "this isn't exactly stuff that I talk to them about a lot. It's..." She leaned her head in again, cheek to his collarbone. "Astren in particular would mostly just be concerned to hear I was hoping for any such thing. She wouldn't get it, not really."

He squeezed her again, backing off from the subject of the earth elemental. "You know, if it's ever too overwhelming, you can come to me about it." He left that ambiguous for the moment, though he did add, "any time."

Kay laughed, a soft thing, and rubbed Aaron's back with the hand she still had wedged between him and the couch. In a way, the offer itself drew her out of her own self-pity -- the mayfly offering solace, and of all things succeeding. Aaron offering solace.

"Thank you." She tilted her head up, kissed his cheek. "I'm alright, though. I'm just going to blame hormones for this one."

"Damn them all to hell," he replied, raising his voice theatrically. "You want icecream, too, or do I get to scarf the tub this time?"
ktfe: (Mom Look)

[personal profile] ktfe 2012-03-15 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oooh, don't you take away my icecream," she warned, and leaned back -- though, adjusting the way she was leaning into him, 'back' in this case meant that she ended up draped over his lap rather than the couch. "Though I might share, considering how good you're being just now."

It'd gotten her thinking, though, this whole conversation, and in one part of her mind she was running through the list of old loved ones, refreshing old, neglected memory pathways. In a way it was concerning. She hadn't thought about some of them in years; that was bad. She crossed her arms behind her head and looked up at him, look canting back to thoughtful. "I do mean it, though; if you ever want to ask, with you, I'm happy to talk about it. This," she waved a hand vaguely, tone deeply wry, "won't happen every time."

[personal profile] aaron_agate 2012-03-15 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He had chuckled at her impotent warning, though as she lay back across his lap, he never the less began to stroke her hair idly, fingers twining amongst those strands and gently rubbing at her scalp. "One day you'll have to give me a decent run down, though I might track down distant relatives, if you're not careful," he intoned, grinning. Kay seemed to be in an odd mood today, and he couldn't pin it entirely on hormones alone. He'd started to get an idea of what living forever -- having lived forever -- must actually mean to a person. It was the sort of thing that he'd been working on, though he had not achieved such means yet. It was interesting to see how the lack of entropy changed a person, but stranger still when it was a person that he deeply cared for.

[personal profile] ktfe 2012-03-15 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Kay barked a laugh at that, relaxing into the caresses he was offering her and oblivious to his thoughts. Her own were calming down, given the notion of perhaps talking about it more later. Really, talking to him at all had caught her a bit by surprise, out of nowhere, though it'd been years since she'd been specifically averse to the thought of it.

"I guess if anyone has the resources to, it's you. Check with that mighty search engine in the future. Actually," she frowned thoughtfully, "might be better to stick to searching in the here and now. Bet you'd find info about ours in the future."

"Oh no," Aaron laughed. "I don't think I want to know the exploits of the child villain, here." Speaking of which, the room Cassie'd been in had gone very quiet. "I'd better go check on our littlest munchkin. Second littlest," he amended, rubbing Kay's belly as one might an oversized religious symbol. "Wish me luck."

[personal profile] ktfe 2012-03-15 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Kay snickered and laboriously pulled herself to sitting up, letting him escape rather than continuing to keep him down on the couch. "Yeah, that's the sound of trouble. Bring back ice cream."

"Pickles, too," he exclaimed, chortling before he wandered off to dispense parental justice.

Vanar, at least, was still in the room. Spotting his chance, the great dog wandered up to Kay and rested his chin on her knee. If nothing else, she had one staunch defender for life.
