[ shaking the dust off of him/re-voicetesting after many years - uli's a 19yo draftee surgeon during the clone wars. the medstar novels are about a mobile surgical hospital (RMSU in the star wars universe) and the series is effectively M*A*S*H in space if M*A*S*H took place during the vietnam war.

looking to keep him in the clone wars era, really itching to put him in a ground combat zone/thread him against clones, because a big theme of the series that i really enjoyed was like, humanity of clones/how they end up systematically dehumanized even by medical providers etc. if there's one thing i enjoy it's putting characters in horrendous and trying situations that will eventually take their toll!! also especially interested in moral shades of gray in which the republic aren't really the cut-and-dry good guys, atrocities get committed, the act of killing is treated very nonchalantly, etc etc. ]

She'll scrounge odd bits of work to keep herself charged and repaired, stealing what she needs otherwise and stowing away on ships to get between planets. [ It's impossible not to know, after a few decades of life, that death generally elicits one of two reactions in its witnesses: horror or sadistic enjoyment. No reaction, on the other hand, is the property of only the slimmest majority.

'I'm a killer, Sir!' they'd all shouted over and over for weeks in basic training, even in OCS for candidates destined for the Engineering Corps, until it became part of their unconscious truth, just as the sergeants responsible for priming the latest round of weapons for the Republic intended. But actually killing in combat, seeing dead bodies—clones and bornmen and draftees and stormtroopers all tend to react with distaste to too much glee from their comrades when the enemy is killed.

But it's seen as an exaggeration of something understandable. Rejoice, for the enemy who has tried to slay me is dead. What does it matter if a few civilians get clipped if one hundred rebels fall in their midst?

To neither flinch nor grin, though, is what unsettles most soldiers. That's unnatural; they talk about it, hushed, in corridors. They talk about combat fatigue and coming unscrewed and fragging. 'His helmet fell off' is the colloquial here: too much combat. The guy's lost his mind.

So Orson knows that there is an absence of something as he stands with his hands clasped behind his back and watches the firing squad through the plexiglass window. He gives the order. The troopers fire; the bodies collapse; he signs as witness and leaves and carries on with an utterly banal day.

It's not until several hours later that he encounters Galen, but already he's smiling in greeting, then cocks his head to one side and regards him as it falls. ]

Galen. Your absence was felt at the dispatch this morning. Why? It was your research they tried to steal.
