Hanna wasn't entirely sure when the world had changed and the dead stopped staying dead, mostly because she'd never had a great handle on days and weeks and months instead of just seasons, and as far as that went it had been at least a year.

Mostly she was just glad that it had started to happen well after she'd killed Marissa, because she had enough trouble facing the woman the first time, having to do it again, with her half-rotten and bloodthirsty would have been too much.

She'd been doing well at avoiding both the shambling undead and various other survivors so far, but she'd needed to venture into a city to scavenge supplies, and even though she'd observed from afar and done what she could to map the streets so that she wouldn't get lost on her way in or out, buildings were always more disorienting to her than trees, and somehow she'd managed not only to attract the attention of four of the things when the shelf she'd been climbing to grab a couple of cans from the very top had given way, clattering to the floor, but in her mad dash to escape, she'd gotten turned around and just kept hitting blind alleys and streets blocked with debris.

So... They're monsters now, too? They've gotten sick, they've decayed, and now they have a rotting stink not unlike the flesh of the cursed beasts. Similar, but...but the blood still bleeds red.

It's strange. It gives Martin new, uneasy feelings on top of all the other ones. But what difference did that make? He was still breathing, which meant he could still move, and he'd have to move to find his way back to the compound - back to where things made sense, where he wouldn't have to think on his own anymore.

Martin's been doing his best to move in the dark, hide in the day. To stay far from people as much as monsters, lest he break any more rules. With the state of this town, it's rare to hear much hustling at all, let alone at this hour, so he's caught surprised when he sees a silhouette in the last-working streetlamp on the road glowing from the mouth of the alley.

It moves too well to be a monster. A human?!

If he holds still, they may not see him. Human eyes in the dark are weak. It's why he's the way he--

"-?!"

His nose fills with the stink of the monsters before he hears them. They'll hurt the human.

If he's worth anything, he's only valuable if he can keep humans alive - even just one.

"Down here!" he hisses in the dark.

One of the many 'improvements' that had been made to her was that she could adjust from full light to low-light vision rapidly. It wasn't night vision, not really -though her dark vision was better than most humans- it was just that the transition didn't take more than a second, maybe two if it was drastic enough.

While she couldn't fully see him, she'd definitely heard someone -because the former people didn't use words, just groaned and gnashed their teeth- so an actual voice, actual words, meant an actual person. She couldn't trust anyone's intentions, she knew that much even before things had gone wrong, but she also trusted in her own ability to get out of the situation if facing the undead was a better option.

She backtracked that half pace, darting down the alley instead, moving as quickly as she dared before she could actually see what was down there, making sure she wouldn't trip over anything and just end up in a worse situation, "Hello?"

Martin's short, slouched form distorts the straight-edge of one of the dumpsters, black eyes reflecting in the low light. His brow is knit with perpetual worry as he watches her approach, seemingly as afraid of her as what may follow.

Instead of replying aloud, he gestures, then points up to the fire escape ladder that's dangling nearby.

That was... not what she'd been expecting, and while it did occur to her that he might just be leading her into a trap to steal her supplies, she didn't get that sense from him, if that was what he was after, why lure her away from the roaming undead? Why not just wait for them to take her and swipe her stuff before she turned?

Which was why she just nodded, smile breaking out, waiting only long enough for the cluster that had been following her to set to moaning again, hoping it would be enough to drown out the initial clatter of her swinging herself up onto that ladder, matching the sway of it after the first few steps so that it didn't rattle as she kept climbing, just trusting that her new companion would follow.

There is a part of Martin that thinks he should just run off, herd the monsters away to keep her safe. That's what a smarter, stronger Darkov would do, surely...

But he's not smart. He's not strong. And if he died, maybe that was fine, but he might've just squandered being useful to a surviving human, and wouldn't that be more of a shame? He has to at least try.

So while it does take a little longer than one would expect, there is an eventual clatter and some grunting as Martin climbs up on a dumpster and jumps to the ladder and struggles his way up after the human. He's hardly as graceful (or as quiet), but he at least has the means to hoist himself up.

She was waiting for him on the roof, far enough back that she wouldn't be easily seen from the ground, not that the zombies were an issue in that case as much as other survivors, though it had been a while since she'd seen any of those.

She relaxed a little once he actually came into view again, realizing that she'd been half-worried that he'd be off to whatever the next step of this trap was, and it might still be one, but she wasn't as worried about it once he came into view again.

She looked him over for a moment before nodding once, voice quiet when she spoke, "Thank you." Even just those two words were colored by a gently lilting Germanic accent, and there was a brief hesitation before she added, "I'm Hanna."

Martin double-takes, seemingly surprised to be given thanks - to be given words at all, or to have seen her still about and not further along in her escape. But then, he's the one who pointed the ladder out, isn't he?

"Uh--" He has no quick response, not after pulling himself up onto the roof properly, wiping under his bangs. "Ye-yes'm. Where...where do you need to go?"

In immediate hindsight, that wasn't the right response to a name. He grimaces.

"M-Martin. Ma'am."

"Just Hanna." She replied, giving a little shake of her head, "Not a ma'am yet." She moved to the blocky air conditioning unit in the middle of the roof, hoisting herself easily up onto it to scan the horizons, finally pointing, towards a rise at the edge of the city, "There, that cellular broadcast tower that is disguised as a tree. That's where my camp is."

She considered for a moment, tracing streets and turning slightly before pointing again, one of the main thoroughfares, "That's the way I came in, but I think we can leave a different way."

He watches her, himself slouched in a posture braced to react or recoil at the drop of a hat; his head turns to follow where she points, licking his lips anxiously as he considers the distance. He doesn't know the city well enough to discern the easiest routes for her, but he can't just let her go out there alone.

"Then, then I'll watch your back," he utters. "If...if more come, I will kill them. And you can go."

She considered for a moment, studying him from her perch, but she nodded, sliding down to the roof again and fishing a pair of cans out of her bag, handing them over, "One is soup and one is pineapples. In case we get separated, you can still have dinner for helping me."

She knew that most people didn't share supplies, but before the shelf had fallen, getting her in the predicament he'd pulled her out of, she'd managed to collect more than she strictly needed, and if he'd gone out of his way to help her, she was going to return the favor.

The gesture seems to surprise him - more than how swiftly she navigated a foreign rooftop on her own. Martin had been raised to think all humans in dire need of Darkov defense against monsters, but this girl moves near as freely as some of his cousins would...

And she's freely giving him some of her precious stores? He at least has the awareness to flush and look troubled by that, holding up his hands and shaking his.

"Those are yours, m--" Ma'am. Miss? No, it's Hanna. But saying a person's name seems...insubordinate. "Um. I mean--I. I don't need them. Please keep them. For you."

She studied him for a long moment, as if debating pressing the issue, but instead she just nodded, tucking them away again and securing her bag once more. Chances were good she would make the offer again -or at least offer to share her dinner- once they got to her camp, but for the time being they actually had to get out of the city.

Moving to the edge of the roof again, she traced her proposed path with an arm, "I think of we cut back out through the alley, we can make it around to the next block, and then it's two blocks up and one block over and we'll be near where I came in to start with, and if we can make it that far without drawing notice, we'll be fine for the night. The defenses are to keep the unquiet dead inside the city, not actual people."

"Do you wish you had been raised differently?" The question was heavy with a Ukrainian accent, the woman asking with her head tipped like a puppy. "To not have all that softness whittled down until all that is left is their weapon?"

She considered the question for a moment, turning it over and weighing it against her experiences, but finally shook her head, "No. If I had been raised differently I never would have been able to kill Marissa Wiegler."

There was also the fact that if she had been raised differently she probably wouldn't have needed to do so, but that wasn't a guarantee, so she wasn't considering that angle, "And I wouldn't have met Sophie."

Those were a lot of pros and cons to be weighed, and Helena gave the girl's answers some thought of her own. "I agree. There needs to be those around who can take care of the monsters that threaten babies. Sometimes I think of other lives, but I have seen what my sestras have become, and maybe I am part of that as well."

She smiled at that response, nodding, "Yes, there will always be those who need protecting and cannot do it themselves."

Her tone went just a little conspiratorial, shifting closer, "But, you don't have to be what you were made for. You can decide to be something else, if you want to. That's what I did." It wasn't always easy, and some days were definitely harder than others, but at least now if she needed to hurt someone it was because she needed to, and not because someone else told her to.

Helena nodded, a small smile at the edge of her own lips as she looked the younger girl over. "Yes. I would like to be something they did not tell me to be. There is much to choose from." She had skills, like the other, that would always be there, at the tip of her fingers if she needed to use them. But she did not want to just be a thing. There was a reason the sisters had singled her out as a child, and that spark to defy seemed to be something that all her kind had. It pleased her to know they hadn't taken that from her.

"What of you? What does the girl want to be that is not a thing to others?"

"I'm a traveler now. I go places, I see things." Her brow creased a little, "I think it is what my mother would have done, but I don't know. She died when I was a baby, so I can't ask her." It was said easily and matter-of-fact, she wasn't upset about it, because it had already happened, there was no reason for her to be upset by something she didn't remember.

"I write about the things I see, sometimes, or draw pictures." She was getting good at quick sketches that still caught all the important details. Of course, there was also the fact that she was, occasionally, still falling back on being a weapon, but on her own terms, and only against people who intended her harm or some kind.

"It is nice, yes? To see things. To smell the fishes?" She grinned, thinking of all the things she'd been getting to do now that she was off the leash of the Proletheans. Now that she had family. Abomination or not, she liked being able to eat what she wanted, when she wanted.

And to not have to hurt those just because someone else told her to. Not that she'd stopped entirely either. Some people needed to be hurt. Or did not listen when she told them to stop bothering her. They stopped when forks went into eyes.

"Not the fish, not the smell of them." She shook her head, nose wrinkling, but she was smiling all the same, "Unless it is the smell of them cooking with vegetables and a good sauce."

She made a thoughtful noise, considering, "And one true thing I have learned, is that most people want to help." In her experience, people were generally actually good, it was just that most people, in the course of their daily lives, didn't really get much chance to exhibit that. She had started being able to tell when helping her had genuinely made someone's day better just because of that, they'd been able to help a stranger.

"I like food. Good food. Sestra Allison makes good food. It is a pleasure to eat at her table." Anything was better than the food she'd been given at the orphanage, and the staggered meals that she suspected now was dog food by her other 'trainers'. She'd had more good food since going out on her own than she had in her whole life. It was wonderful.

"You and I have come across different people, then. Most are sneaky liars who threaten babies. But it does me a happiness to show them the error of that thinking." It didn't help that the mess she'd landed in was completely fucked up even by fucked up standards. Hannah, she figured, had it good. And she was pleased to know that. Ones such as they, who'd been forged into someone else's desires, given flight to be their own creatures... it showed that there was some balance in the world.

"There are those, too." She agreed with a nod, "The wolves of the world." Her head tilted, considering again, almost as if she had to tally up her encounters with people, "I do not think that there are more of them than anyone else, I think they just make themselves more available, on purpose. They can't take advantage of people if they don't interact with people. But the kind ones, they will keep to themselves because they are looking out for being taken advantage of."

Her smile emerged once more, "Do you have a favorite food?"
