Well, this wouldn't be the first time Trip's fallen for someone older, but can you blame him? He's a bright child, if also a rather jaded and cynical one, and he's never really gotten along with his peers. He's too focused on his studies and his future, making a name for himself, hoping to stand out, and finally getting some acknowledgment.
So, he's an insufferable teacher's pet, on top of being a know-it-all and a loner. He didn't mind one bit, he couldn't really relate to the other kids anyway. He hasn't been a child for a long time, in his mind, so it's just as well.
He preferred someone more on his level, which to Trip, seemed to be other adults (after all, he was quite convinced he was one, even if he was well others his age weren't.)
And if Marie acknowledged his efforts, rather than rolled her eyes or called him a walking encyclopedia or a teacher's pet, all the more reason to fall for her... and she was beautiful! Tall, mature, elegant... everything he wished he were, too. He'd be jealous if he weren't so captivated by her, down to the flutter of loose strands of hair, silky as flowing water. He'd watch her walk into class with his breath caught in his throat, cheeks colouring, and his legs crossing at the ankle under his desk, revealing the heels he wore to try to appear taller.]
