The Hanahaki Disease Meme

The Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from one-sided love, where the patient throws up and coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. The infection can be removed through surgery, but the feelings disappear along with the petals...

1- Discovery:
There's the one person who makes your heart leap into your throat- but wait, that's not your heart. Where are all these flowers coming from? And why do they remind you of your beloved?

2- Concern:
Someone you know has been acting strange lately... Coughing a lot, hiding their hands all the time... It's enough to make anybody worry.

3- Sicker and Sicker:
Coughing up flower petals all the time isn't easy to hide. But it's getting harder to even breathe, now. You're going to have to make a decision, and soon...

4- Confession:
Everyone knows that there's two ways to get rid of Hanahaki: Surgery (the risk dependent on the time period), or confessing your feelings. Time to toe up and face your beloved and just tell them that you love them so much you're dying from it.

5- Post-Op:
The other option... You just couldn't tell them, but you weren't ready to die. Still, without those feelings the world seems a little less colorful. Can you still be friends with them now that you have to start all over? Do you want to?

6- Make your own!
There's flower petals coming out of somebody's mouth in some way for some reason- make this prompt your own.

Just as a note, due to the nature of the meme vivid descriptions of coughing/choking/gagging are probably going to happen. If you want it toned down, make sure to put that in your top-level.

The two had been in the Whitestone workshop all day, fixing up a new engine for the city. Most of the other mechanics left for home, and Percival had left frequently. No doubt to attend to other business as a baron, but that left Taryon in charge of the project all day.

Now that they are alone, he can take a good look at his friend. He's bend over his bench with his hand to his mouth as if he were will.

Orym had heard stories of people coughing up flowers. He'd even heard rumors of Ashari who died because flowers choked their lungs. He'd always assumed it was some form of a monstrous plant that not even the strongest healing spells could cure. He never understood why talking about it made anyone he knew sad and because he knew he loved Will from the moment he he was old enough to understand that Will loved him back.

Then Will died and any thought of loving anyone else flew out the window. He was too angry and depressed to think about letting anyone in. But then he was sent away from home and he walked into a tavern to see the most beautiful air genasi he'd ever seen.

Dorian out of everyone began to draw Orym out of his isolation and make him focus on the world and doing what he could to help. He let himself grow closer to the bard expecting that it might go somewhere.

But circumstances pulled them apart and that is when Orym began to feel ill. His chest grew tight and he struggled to breath when he lay down. He didn't understand what was happening to him until his first trip to the Faewild and Fearne's grandmother spelled out what was going on.

Orym is tempted to message Dorian, but then magic goes to hell, he makes his deal believing he was dead anyway, they went to the moon, FCG, Dorian returned and they went running to the ruins of an ancient city only to be forced to watch it fall again.

Orym stumbled away from the main room when the story was done needing desperately to cough his lungs out, which has no desire to do in front of the elf who killed his husband. His condition had gotten worse since Dorian's return since he is now faced with the object of his desire every day.

Brauis flirting with both of them wasn't helping given Orym is already assuming his feelings aren't returned. He doubled over hacking up a handful of bloody bluebells as he struggles to catch his breath.

He scoops the bloody flowers and shoves them in the snow as he takes the moment he has to actually take in air. "Shit...shit...shit."

( they chalk it up to asthma, and for his childhood, that indeed seems to be the case. perhaps it would have remained so too if life had not changed in every way imaginable, all of it leading to...well, this.

at first, ciel himself had amounted this to slow recovery after the events of the campania. in the brief but distinct time he ordered sebastian to take time to himself, lest those visiting the phantomhive estate see him in such a state, it isn't as though ciel hasn't been seen to. the other servants do their best and tanaka is figuratively and literally old hat at the job. but none of them are sebastian. every time ciel has that thought, he buries it. if there is a strange pain in his chest, difficulty drawing breath, well, unfortunately his weaker constitution means convalescence is sometimes/often longer than it would be for someone else.

he writes it off.

but his coughing fits don't improve at all. rather, they worsen. in the comfort and warmth of the manor well maintained, this should not be so. what's more, ciel finds himself in days to come feeling strangely full no matter how little he eats. sometimes eating even makes him nauseous because it feels like too much, even if it is dessert. that should have been the clincher really, but ciel places himself in the world of adults no matter how much he loathes them. ego breeds a certain blindness, and if it has to do with a considerable personal weakness, the denial may only root deeper.

the night before sebastian is to resume his position and duties as usual, ciel wakes up struggling to breathe. his back arches violently and he somehow flips himself onto his knees and forearms, gasping, chest heaving, tears burning. he feels like he's going to throw up, tries to swallow it down, fails, small body heaving in a way that is as painful as it looks. it's not bile that sullies the sheets though. this familiar coppery taste. blood spots and spreads like additions to the equally bloodied petals, a few leaves already starting to rot. all parts are huge, leaving no wonder there's no room to breathe in ciel's chest. the white lilies of funerals at odds with the rotting leaves, full bloom albeit looking quite crushed for how they came up such a narrow throat.

confused, mind slow to catch up, ciel, still panting, curls bloody fingers around one of the flowers. he has heard of this. he just figured he would die before it ever became a problem, if indeed he were even capable of it, which he honestly did not think he was. staring at proof otherwise now, he finds it...hateful. another wave of coughing wracks his frame, the bed looking more and more like a readied coffin. he remembers the details of his contract with the only one he finds himself thinking of now, a fact he can neither willfully ignore nor completely accept. ciel would have to deal with illness or anything else like that, and sebastian would protect him from everything else, external forces. this time, when he is able to pause, blood and saliva dripping from his mouth, still desperate to get what air he can, when his gaze focuses in on the lilies again he glares, furious. he crushes the ones closest to his right hand.

it isn't advisable to sleep in his current state, and ciel is not surrendering to it by choice. but it's true he was still recovering from the cold atlantic, so this on top of it exhausts him more than even usual. as his vision fades he at least ends up collapsing into the mess of flowers and blood on his side. small blessings, what struggled breaths his body takes would only have been that much harder with his face down. he has the thought as he slips under: i should call for you, shouldn't i. the fact that it's not actually even a question in ciel's head is more the pity.

on the campania, lizzie had promised to protect him. at the forging of their contract, sebastian has long ago done the same. but it is the hardest thing of all really, protecting someone like ciel from himself. sometimes an unrivaled intersection of pride, stubbornness, and discipline, these things can also devour him. as much as his greed that he will never, for anyone, call love.
