[Summer had come to Hawkins and with it came summer vacation which for Carter meant a break from having to endure the teasing, the snide remarks, not to mention the constant bullying from his fellow classmates. He was free to relax and spend his time working at the hospital or on his music, he was also free to do what a lot of people in Hawkins seemed to be doing which was go to the local public pool.

Carter liked the water, he preferred lakes because of their natural serenity but the pool was kind of fun as a people watching experience. He saw lots of different types from his position stretched out on a pool chair by one side of the pool; little kids, full families, teenagers, college kids and a large group of forty something women who were all primping and preening as if they were a flock of brightly colored birds trying to attract a mate.

There was another reason to come to the pool.

Billy.

He had remarked casually to Carter on their last day before summer vacation that he had gotten a job at the pool. That was it, no actual invitation to come by and say hi, but thankfully at this point Carter was getting pretty good at reading between the lines.

So here he was, in a pair of floral swim trunks, slowly and methodically applying sunscreen to his arms and chest as he waited for Billy to come on shift.]

[Of course he's waiting for Billy to come on shift. Half of the female population of Hawkins over a certain age waits for Billy to come on shift. He's beautiful, and he knows it. He's a dream. He's everyone's dream.

And he's worth waiting for. Especially with all the time in the summer allowing him to get the warmth of sunlight back into his skin. This is closer to Billy being in his element, and he has no shame over it. He wants to be seen. He is being seen. At least he is once he pushes open the door from the staff locker room and steps out into the sun. Woman are sitting up a bit straighter, high school and college girls are turning their attention to him as he smiles and moves, and of course the kids around the pool are already wincing because here is the hard ass.

Billy loves it. Loves being seen and desired. He walks confidently around the pool, smiling and winking at people as he passes. As he makes a beeline for his chair he catches brief sight of Carter, and maybe he's smiling a bit more to himself to know the guy is here because of him. He's certain of it.]

[He knows that Billy loves the attention, he soaks it in just like he does with the sun's warm rays, and when he winks at more than a few ladies it doesn't bother Carter. It might have once but not anymore, this is the Billy the public gets to see and desire but the Billy he knows is so much more.

He is messy, complicated, beautiful, angry, passionate and special.

The Billy he knows lets him do things that no one else here would ever suspect or even believe, which is the point and Carter just smiles to himself and watches as Billy gets situated in his life guard tower. Looking every bit like the bronzed Californian hunk that he is.]

He's an absolute dream-boat!
I might have to try and drown myself just so he can give me mouth to mouth...
I hope he checks me out in this bikini.

[These are just some of the things Carter catches from other people drooling over Billy, both with his ears and his mind and he chuckles and leans back in his chair to continue reading his book. Feeling relaxed and happy about being in the sun and being near the one person in Hawkins he cares about, watching Billy be in his element makes him happy. About twenty minutes later he is interrupted.]

Poetry by the poolside, now that's a new one around these parts.

[A pleasant voice says and Carter looks up surprised and into the face of a good looking guy in his early twenties, he has dark hair, deep brown eyes and a genuine smile.]

Oh, uh is it? I wouldn't know, I'm not from around here.

I can tell. Most guys in Hawkins don't read poetry or if they do they don't do it in public.

Why not?

[The older boy chuckles and has a seat next to Carter.]

Because they're not smart enough to get it or secure enough to be seen with it.

Oh.

I'm sure you've noticed that this place can have....limited views, shall we say? [He says with a slanted little grin.] So are you a poet yourself?

[Carter smiles and shakes his head.]

Me? Nah, not really. I mostly read it to help improve my song lyrics.

Ahhh a musician, that's cool. What do you play?

Acoustic guitar. [Carter says and then lifts an eyebrow.] Uh so you're from Hawkins? I haven't seen you around town at all.

I am but I moved away last year to go to college, I'm here for the summer to visit family. That's my little sister over there.

[The guy says and points at a little girl with long dark hair who is splashing about in the pool with everyone else.]

[Billy's eyes are always on the move. Of course they are. His job is to watch out for people who might be in danger. But you better bet that when he sees Carter's attention on someone else, his heart flares with jealousy. Just for a moment. He doesn't like it. At all. How dare this happen?

But he tries to keep his attention on his work. Tries to focus.

And his eyes keep going back. Back to Carter, time and time again.

Which means he needs to figure something out. But what? How? The answer comes unexpected with a kid running around near Carter. Which means he is free to blow his whistle, loud and hard. Everyone's attention snaps to him.]

The fuck are you doing, shithead?

[He snaps it at the kid, but it's not just about the kid. It's about Carter. What is he doing?]

No running around the pool, fatass? You want banned? I will ban your ass!

[What Carter is doing is just having a pleasant conversation with someone, it's so rare here in Hawkins that he almost forgot what it's like and this guy seems genuinely interested in what he's talking about. So when Billy's whistle goes off and he hears him shouting at a larger kid near them he starts a little, glancing up and at Billy with a confused expression on his face. He doesn't understand that part of that tone is directed at him, just that Billy sounds angry.]

Wow, someone takes pool safety a little too seriously.

[The dark haired guy murmurs sarcastically.]

Well I mean, he is the lifeguard. It's his job to keep people safe.

Doesn't mean he should be an asshole about it.

[Carter opens his mouth to object but it's hard because it is true, there's no need for Billy to call the kid a fatass. He's just a kid and got carried away having fun.]

I'm Brenton, by the way. [The dark haired guy says and offers Carter his hand.]

Carter, it's nice to meet you.

[Brenton's younger sister comes over to ask him something and while he talks with her Carter turns his attention back to Billy, his brows creasing together in concern at the angry scowl on Billy's face. He tries to meet his eyes but it's hard since Billy is wearing sunglasses but he still tries, lifting his brows and giving him a little smile of encouragement.]
