Marriage for love is a such a modern concept. In the past, marriage was
recognised as a social contract. Unions were entered into for many
reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

POSSIBLE REASONS:
STATION: You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
FEUD: You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
ECONOMICS: Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
EMPIRE: You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
TRIBUTE: You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
BLOODLINE: Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
DISAPPROVAL: Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.

Nine would really prefer to be back at work. His thoughts were going to all the unfinished tasks, the folders piling up on his desk. Despite having climbed to quite a prominent position in the police force at a young age, he still had plenty of work sliding across his desk- a workload that his family had been quite happy trying to add to for the past few years which was why he was wondering why him.

Nine sighed where he stood by the wall, looking at all the guests who'd gathered from over his wine glass.

His engagement party. His and whoever it was they'd matched him with from the Mitth. It seemed like half the Ascendancy had shown up for it. Everyone who was anyone, certainly. Despite the hustle and bustle of the grand party he could hear whispers of curiosity. He was used to listening in on conversations while looking like he wasn't after all. Used to observing and using his observations to climb higher.

Nine liked being busy. Liked intrigue. He did not like seeing Saganu buttering up higher-ups in the Mitth family. And yet there the man was- straight across the room, gesturing at him while talking to the one Nine was halfway sure was named Thurfian. Talking him up, Nine was sure. His family had even made sure he looked proper, dolled up and his normally wavy hair tamed into a sleek braid.

Thurfian looked like he was sweating, not that Saganu seemed to notice.

Given that no official introduction had been made yet, Nine wondered if his intended had decided to be mysteriously absent from the engagement party. But surely the Mitth wouldn't allow that. Late, perhaps.

Busy with work? Nine wished that were him right now.

Or perhaps his future spouse was going through what he had been going through hours earlier- being made presentable so that both families could show that they were putting their best foot forward with each other. Nine couldn't help the huff of laughter at that thought.

He hoped the man showed up in uniform. Or made a scene.

It would liven the party up some after all.

[Having Geshu Lin -- the now former General -- brought back from the front lines after everything had turned out to be... complicated. Jinhsi could understand both sides to varying degrees, and while she understood the charged emotions of those who had lost loved ones under his command... she wasn't ignorant to the weight of each decision that had to be made by those north at the vanguard base. If she was here in Jinzhou losing sleep to make certain her decisions were all sound, with the luxury of not being under attack, she couldn't condemn the decisions made by the soldiers giving everything they had for the sake of the rest of them.

The solution she had proposed then had been a simple one. She hadn't been willing to consider any of the more radical options... and for all they didn't always see eye to eye, she didn't want Jinzhou to lose him either... so she'd offered herself for a simple handfasting. It would be a fully political arrangement, and she knew that the people would also understand as much... and that they trusted her judgment on what was best for Jinzhou.

Jinhsi had never exactly imagined he'd be thrilled about the offer... but she'd been relieved when he hadn't refused either.

The preparations had been rather swift -- she'd wanted everything completed to allow less likelihood for any loopholes to be taken advantage of before the handfasting had bound them politically as intended... and so the ceremony had been simple, even with traditional attire acquired to keep up the appearance as intended.

They are still in ceremonial dress when they finally leave the company of others and step into her home -- a large space she kept perfectly tidy, with nothing particularly fragile or frivolous even with the elegant decorations, as suited to someone like her. It's when the door closes behind them, leaving them alone properly, that she turns to face him once again, with a light gesture toward a near hall.]

I have had a room prepared for you here, and with our arrangement, you are free to treat my home as your own, to any degree you'd like.

[Honestly, she never had any interest on forcing him into any specific situation -- should he wish to reside elsewhere entirely she would see it arranged. Jinhsi does pause for a brief moment, silver eyes lifted toward him in a way that remained far softer than many others in the city.]

I would like to speak with you, once we've had a moment to change into something less formal, if you would allow me that time?

[ The war has ended, and House Targaryen must continue on, even if it limps, or crawls, or hobbles. Half of the dragons are dead and more of their family has joined them, banished to the deepest of the Seven Hells (Aemond, Aegon, and all the rest of the Greens) or exalted up into their pantheon of Targaryen greatness (his brothers, Baela, Rhaenys, Daemon, all the innocent children.)

But it was all worth it, right? For his mother to wear the crown, to sit the throne, to rule over this kingdom that has ripped itself apart and now needs to heal and mend.

It will be a slow process.

Jace understands duty, but it doesn't mean he enjoys it. He had imagined these days so clearly with Baela since they were children, their marriage and days in the Red Keep as they prepared to ascend as the next King and Queen, a partnership of equals rooted in love. Jace had been daydreaming about it even as he and Helaena were wed in the Grand Sept, the face of his dead bethrothed haunting him as he looked at his aunt and recited their vows, another duty and concession to the Westerosi Faith of the Seven. He kept a brave face (as did she, he's sure) as the ceremony bound them together, another rough stitch in the repairs to family and kingdom.

That was months ago, now. Jace had agreed to the marriage at his mother's unstoppable insistence, and the statesman in him knows it was the right thing to do. But the man is still very much in denial.

The Queen knows how this goes, an echo of her own dutiful marriage to Jace's father. The lack of an heir or even hint of possibility of pregnancy is troubling and places them on shaky ground.

Which is what brings him to her door, in his nightgown and robe, entering into her chambers at twilight.

It takes a moment for him to realize where she is in the room, the large wooden doors still open with Helaena's guard waiting for dismissal. ]

I'd like to spend time in here tonight, if you'll have me.

( the marriage seems a straightforward solution.

a neat one, even. why martyr iorveth when he can be neutralised, instead? nail his feet to the ground with a suitable marriage ... and how convenient that an influential, eccentric lord should have a favoured half-elven daughter, raised with all the pomp and privilege of her papa's station but not, alas, expected to marry quite so well as he might aspire for her. an elven husband, he presumes, will assuage some of his daughter's fears of matrimony; a husband hand-chosen for her by the emperor assuages some of his. the benefits to all parties seem obvious,

if one assumes that being made a living punishment for one's husband is worth all of them, which gwenaëlle is not at all convinced of.

nevertheless,

she is a vision of loveliness on her wedding, demurely cooperative. her attendants are her half-sisters; older by a handful of years, elves in full, the resemblance marked— she favours them far more than she does the count, a handsome man and seasoned courtier whose eyes are far more intelligent than his daffy smile and affable conversation suggest. the three young women confer amongst themselves, and rarely with any of the guests or, indeed, the man of the hour; their conversation happening mostly in glances and small gestures, the tilt of a head or a hand at an elbow. the eldest girl's hand at her little half-elven, half-sister's elbow, most often, too lightly to look like restraint but effective, the way that gwenaëlle bites her tongue and straightens her back when she's bid to.

there are other benefits at hand in this marriage. she just has to be clever enough to grasp them,

but first she just has to get through this wedding reception without actually telling anyone to fuck off, and it's proving challenging. )

[ What materials Sylvain had managed to get a hold of to try to learn what he could about Almyra felt supremely inadequate even devoid of context. Now, with the crossing of the border and the transition of the lands from the mountains at the Throat to grassland, it's really starting to hit home how wildly unprepared this young man is for this new life he's been sent off to. The weight of responsibility to not fuck this up completely, to not manage to offend and cause this tenuous attempt at negotiation to fall apart into invasion and all-out war... it's enough to break a man. ]

[ Sylvain is oddly serene about it all, though, as the travelling party stops in an oasis town for a change of mounts and resupply. He's able to pick up some more books, some learning materials closer to the border that are in Fodlan's language, and despite the funny looks he got, some children's school level language books for Almyran. He has a goal, and something to do, he has an actual challenge to face down instead of a nebulous, uncertain future with no real purpose. So what if this is kind of his worst nightmare, being traded off like a shiny little trinket, like he isn't his fully fledged person? At least he doesn't have to see his brother or his father's ugly faces for a very long time. ]
