By some miracle, or string of miracles, they'd survived. They were definitely marked by the experience, in more ways than one, but they were alive and that was what mattered.

Being alive mattered almost as much as being out, and they were that too. After a few days of recovery at Steve's -because who would think to look for either of them there?- and a bit of note-passing telephone to get Wayne to retrieve Eddie's van from the impound lot -as it had been picked up as 'abandoned' during the initial stages of planning their attack- and loading some of Eddie's things into it. Mostly Eddie had been glad that he hadn't asked too many questions except to make sure that the two of them would, in fact, be safe together on the road and to get Eddie to promise to send a postcard when he could.

That had been three days ago, a span of time which seemed both nowhere near that long and definitely longer than that at the same time. The current plan was to keep heading west until they hit the coast or until the van gave up, whichever came first.

"Where's the next food-and-gas turnoff?" Eddie asked, glancing at her in the passenger seat, "We can get both of those things and then back on the road to the next rest stop, bunk down for the night." They hadn't yet hit what either of them considered a safe distance to try getting a motel for the night instead of bedding down in the back of the van the way Eddie had on many occasions.

When she'd daydreamed about finally getting to leave Hawkins for good, it had never really involved riding shotgun in Eddie Munson's beat-up van for the second time in her incredibly short, confusing life. And yet, here she was, doing just that. Chrissy knew better than most that things rarely turned out the way they were expected to, and this was still surprising.

The last several days had been confusing and terrible, and Chrissy was still trying to digest everything that had happened. Having Eddie around helped. Hell, just being around Eddie in general helped, and she wasn't really sure how to feel about that on top of everything else. Either way, she'd packed a bag- honestly just several days' worth of clean clothes, an extra pair of shoes, her babysitting cash, and the paperwork she'd had stashed away for just this sort of occasion, all shoved into her school bag- and then they were off.

Ironically, the last three days had felt easy, even discounting the fact that most of that time had been spent right here in this van.

"Um... it looks like we've got about twenty miles to go." She'd sort of appointed herself as the map wrangler because his driving wasn't the calmest on a normal day, and this was about as far from normal as things had ever been. "Are you getting tired?" They'd made some progress, but it still felt like they were too close. It was pretty easy for her to nap right where she was, but Eddie was stuck with all the driving because she didn't have a license.

Eddie wouldn't have packed as carefully as Wayne had done, he'd have grabbed a change of clothes, the Dragonslayer, his cassette collection and maybe he would have remembered a toothbrush. Wayne had made sure he had most of his clothes and sundries, along with the cassette collection and the guitar, as well as a small box of books, because it would fit in the back of the van in one of the racks where band gear usually went. Wayne had also packed up the camping gear just in case they had to rough it, but also so they'd at least have sleeping bags.

He nodded at the answer, "Twenty miles is easy enough." He flashed her a smile, bright as ever, if a little thin, "And I'm alright. Be even better as soon as I get something to eat." In the past few days he'd actually gotten better at saying he needed a break -part of why they hadn't even gotten all the way across Kansas yet, and had only left Wichita behind that morning- but he was fine for the time being.

"Once we cross over into Colorado we'll be not quite halfway to the coast, and we'll definitely be doing that tomorrow, might make it tonight, but I'd rather not push it unless we have to." The first night had been the worst for feeling like they just needed to keep going, to put as much distance between themselves and Hawkins as humanly possible, and they'd subsequently slept for a solid twelve hours at a state rest stop when Eddie physically couldn't keep driving. After that pacing himself had been easier, for the most part.

"And, bonus, once we hit Colorado I can start busking if we need cash." His brow furrowed, "Actually I could probably just do that now, I don't know why I decided Colorado was the start marker for that."
