[ Now that was a loaded question.

Sister Imperator took a moment to ponder it, looking into the distance as a hand alighted upon her stomach.

Finally, she answered. ]

Not in all cases, no.

What about it?

[ Had this been someone else, she would have immediately shut down the conversation. But perhaps it was the understanding that Edwin had, as well as the curiosity, that allowed her to stay her temper. ]

[uptightboy]

[Edwin takes a nervous breath.]

Was it a tragic love?

[sisterimperator]

[ More silence.

Then - ]

Yes. And no.

[uptightboy]

[Edwin is ready to let it go. It's all invasive and he knows he would clam up terribly if someone would pose such questions to him too.

Though, the answer does make him feel heavier, somehow.]

Was it not tragic because it is the only way to carry it?

You already know, it seems.

[ But despite that, a smile tugged at Sister Imperator's lips as her hand patted her abdomen in an unconscious gesture. ]

In the end, it becomes worth it.

[Edwin's gaze is drawn toward the movement. And... it is a strange sensation, thinking of new life when his ended a hundred years ago. It just puts everything in the strangest perspective.]

That said, I do not suppose you regret it?

[ A halo seemed to shine around her head. Edwin could probably see it, and hear music if he listened for it. ]

No.

[The sight does make Edwin gasp softly, and his head tilts as he tries to make out where the music is coming from. It's definitely a sight he did not expect, yet he finds it quite beautiful.]

I...

[He wants to say that his love is not tragic so there is nothing to regret but... No, she is right.]

I doubt I could ever regret it, indeed.

[ With his powers of observation, he'd come to realize she shone when she was pleased. Being the Handmaid of Satan was not just of pain and death but also light and joy. ]

I thought so.

That is the human experience.

[ She wished at one point that she did not love, because it was a vulnerability. A weakness. But now... she would never give it up. Not now that she carried her sons. ]

[With another look at her, with the promise of those lives within her, Edwin finds this discovery entirely delightful. It teaches him that nothing is ever one thing. Not love. Not death. Nor Hell.]

I suppose it is, even for those who ceased being human at one point.

[He clears his throat, setting his pristine collar straighter.]

Is the soul really so different? Would we be human without our souls?

[ She gave him a singular nod. ]

Probably not. But the soul itself is... [He looks down at his hand.] I believe it is only fully human with a body.

There is truth to that. But humanity is a complex thing.

[uptightboy]

[He doesn't answer immediately, his gaze is still down.]

Why, I cannot argue with that statement. I shall keep it in mind, indeed.
