THE DESPAIR EVENT HORIZON MEME



The Despair Event Horizon is the point at which all hope is lost. Something has happened to push your character past the brink of anguish- a level of despair from which there can be no true recovery. A line has been crossed, and there can be no crossing back. Your hopes, your dreams, and possibly your very life: they all end here.

THE RULES:

1. Post with your character. Include which prompts you are or aren't comfortable doing.
2. Reply to others. Pick a prompt from the list.
3. Roleplay your character's descent into despair, rage, madness, or what-have-you. Remember, this is not merely being sad or depressed; the Despair Event Horizon means you've lost your reason to live.

THE PROMPTS:

1. DEFEAT. Your enemy has won. Maybe the aliens have destroyed Earth, or maybe you were just defeated by a rival. The villains have come out on top- or the heroes, if you happen to be a villain. Your friends are all dead, and no one is coming to help you. It's all over now.

2. FAILURE. Your goal, your mission, your life's dream- whatever it was you sought to accomplish, you've failed, and you have no one but yourself to blame. Everyone was counting on you- and you let them all down. GAME OVER.

3. BETRAYAL. You were counting on them, and they let you down. Your trusted friends have stabbed you in the back. Your significant other's been cheating on you- with your worst enemy. Your government has decided you know too much, and has ordered you dead. You only have one question: how could you?

4. HUMILIATION. You've been dragged through the streets, your name turned to mud, and had everyone you know laugh in your face. There'll be no living this one down. (In retrospect, this is really what you get for breaking the first rule of sexting.)

5. LOSS. Friend, lover, or mentor: whoever it is, they're either dead or dying, and you can't live without them. Can you really spend the rest of your life without this person by your side?

6. TORTURE. You've endured enough agony to drive anyone else insane- physical, mental, or both -but now you've finally reached your breaking point. Maybe it was someone else who did this to you, or maybe you did it to yourself; whatever the case, you can't take it anymore. It's time for either you to die... or your tormentors.

7. COMPULSION. You haven't actually hit the DEH- but something is making you think you have. Maybe it's a spell, or a mind-control device, or an illusion: whatever the case, something out there is forcing you to believe that life is no longer worth living. Can you break its hold, or will you succumb to despair?

8. BROKEN IDEALS. Something has happened to shatter your beliefs about the world. Maybe you saw something horrible, or your own ideals failed you- maybe a lie you've believed your entire life has just been proven wrong. Whatever the case, your faith has been broken, and you may not be able to pick up the pieces again.

9. POLITICS. Rick Santorum has been elected President. All hope is lost.

[They had always known that it was a possibility. In fact, it could have been considered a probability - The Animus was far from a perfect device.

Even with the constant tweaking, the tinkering, updates and late night work sessions, it was always the variable they couldn't quite control - Desmond's less than stable condition could attest to that. Its side effects were the shadow that hung over their operation, every sleepless night a grim reminder of just what they were doing to their teammate. His hallucinations had been straddling the line of manageable for weeks, the frequency increasing with every passing day.

Maybe they were lucky that he'd held out this long. Of course, that was banking on the idea that there was any luck involved.

There wasn't.

Until that moment, he'd been nose-deep in a particularly abused looking text, scribbling notes without really looking at them. Any self-respecting Brit knew about the Revolutionary War, even if few actually bothered with the specifics. Likely due to the fact that few of them would be tasked with reliving that particular era. And by few, that really meant none at all.

The shrill screech of the heart monitor rendered it all moot.

Later, they'd figure out that the Bleeding Effect had rendered Desmond's mind incapable of separating himself from his ancestor. For all intents and purposes, the shot may as well have hit Desmond himself.

At the time, it was pandemonium. No logical answers. No thinking it through. Only the mad dash to try and bring back their last hope, to reverse what months of damage had caused. Damned near tearing the needle from Desmond's spasming arm, shouting at Rebecca as though she could somehow fix the situation with a few careful keystrokes. That was her job, wasn't it? There must have been some sign this was coming, some tiny indication that someone had missed.

It wasn't until long after he was gone that either of them had stopped, hands red with blood that had been spilled in decades long past. The silence had been painful, broken only by the continued wail of the monitor and the hitched, uneven breathing of the information team.

It was over.

Somehow, it had once again fallen to Shaun to deal with the formalities. Bill had been so sickeningly detached about the whole thing, mourning the loss of ancestral memories more than the death of his own goddamned son; the funeral arrangements had been dumped on the historian like a common errand.

How graced they were, that the bastard had decided to show up at all.

Shaun's hands fisted against the black suit jacket, teeth clenched as he half-listened to the rites. In some ways, this was worse than what had happened with Lucy. Instead of standing alone, overseeing the burial of one of the select few he might have considered a friend, he now stood with the broken remains of their Order, watching them toss dirt on their last lifeline. Not only did they lose yet another Assassin, and... idiot though he was, another damned friend-
