( the river twinkles down below; half-moon dancing in the ripples among a field of lights-turned-stars. kate leans over the railing, following the stuttering, stumbling walk of a gaggle of drunken women, their shouts and hollers — laughing at their own intoxication — echoing up to the roof terrace. the tables behind her have largely been vacated by this hour, the chill of the night driving people inside and to the bar proper and giving her the freedom to take a breath and nurse the beer in her hand.

relief comes in the space offered here, the din of people below and the stragglers preventing total silence while the weight of the day eases itself off her shoulders. here without anyone from work, without her brother or her phone to keep her tethered to who she normally has to be.

it's freeing. and freezing. the warmth of the day did not last, despite the clear night sky dotted with the few stars which strain their way through the light pollution, and— )
