The "Should Never Be Together" Meme

the "should never be together" meme. | ||
When two people come together in a relationship, it's a beautiful thing. What can be wrong with love, right? Right? Except when the union is completely and totally wrong, for whatever reason. Then things can get a little messy. How To Play 1. Comment with your character, listing their name, canon, etc, along with any preferences. 2. Comment around to others, using the RNG to determine the scenario. It doesn't have to be a lovey-dovey relationship, obviously. There can be hate, sorrow, lust, whatever. 3. Thread! Have fun! Do things! Scenarios 1. Warring Factions: You belong to rival organizations, armies, clubs, etc. Whatever it is, you're not on the same team. 2. Soldiers on the Battlefield: Or maybe you are on the same side, but this is the wrong time and the wrong place. Plus, attachments cause distractions. 3. Bodyguard and the Guarded: Just like the movie with Kevin Costner! One of you has been hired to protect the other for some reason, and feelings are starting to grow. Are you a professional and cut things off, or do you give in? 4. Prince/ss and Knight: Similar to the above, but with a whole 'nother level of wrong...one of you is royal. Courtly love is okay; still, don't forget your place. 5. Enemies: This vendetta is personal, and you totally hate this person! Don't you? Perhaps you're maybe just rivals, or something as serious as superhero and villain. 6. Family: The ultimate taboo. This person is related to you, so there's no way you should indulge this desire, even if it's the most pure love there ever was. 7. Age Difference: The years between you should keep you both at bay, but it's easier said than done. 10. Teacher/Student: Teachers and students have a unique bond, and to corrupt it is a dangerous thing. Will you dare to act on emotions that could put you both in a destructive place? 11. Already Spoken For: One or both of you are already involved with someone else, but the heart wants what the heart wants. Just know that you can't have your cake and eat it, too. 12. Not Compatible: Your personalities or jobs make it so it's hard for you to be together. 13. Not Compatible...in Another Way: You're both different species, which means you're either afraid to take your relationship to a physical level or you can't because of differences in biologies. 14. Not Ready for Love: You took a vow (or celbacy, of chastity, of dedication), you're married to your work, or you just don't want to be involved with anyone. Too bad! 15. Rich and Poor: One of you has the money while the other is from more modest means. Can the 1% and the 99% ever be bedfellows, literally? 16. Hurt Before: Your heart has been broken, and maybe there's been no time to heal. But here you are. 17. WILDCARD |

It has only been a matter of time, not that Kaguya can remember when their relationship first exactly started. She can remember that it had started a bit (re: a decade or two) after Kaguya had told Mokou she had wanted nothing more to do with her, leaving her on the ground beaten and broken. How foolish she had been to say that, as if total separation would even be possible for their kind, as if she could not have some sympathy for the girl, or as if that short time away from each other simply made her realize how essential she had become. But. It could very well be that simply helping Mokou overcome her rage in this way is simply a more exciting project of Kaguya's to do, and one that would have promising results should it succeed. No, she can't shake that rather manipulative nature of hers, even like this.
What only matters now is how she's waiting for Mokou to meet her where they said they'd meet. She won't let her anxiety show at the thought that just maybe Mokou would not come this time, or that something had happened to her along the way, or that they had been found out. The bamboo rustles in the night as she looks to the moon, closing her eyes and listening for footsteps, for flying at this time of night would much too obvious to trace. ]
no subject
After Kaguya had left her screaming on the ground over a decade ago she had initially kept her distance. Licking her wounds, basically. She hadn't even bothered to train at first - it was like she had gotten the fight knocked out of her. Avoiding Kaguya seemed too difficult, though, and fortunately the princess seemed to have similar thoughts. Immortals like them weren't destined to be apart, after all. They hadn't had more than a handful of death matches since that time, though, and Mokou wasn't sure if she was okay with that. She still hadn't been apologized to on her father's behalf, after all, and she hadn't gotten an apology for Kaguya leaving her on the ground.
Eventually though, those feelings and an hour late aside, she pushed her way through the bamboo and sighed while she waves a lazy greeting to Kaguya.]
I thought [hoped] you would have gone home by now.
[She keeps her distance and waits for a response. She is pretty surprised that Kaguya stayed that long, and her voice shows it more than she'd like.]
[[ooc: works for me!]
no subject
...You are late.
[ But never too late, no. She doesn't move either, and for a long moment this is all she says. Eventually-- it always comes down to eventually-- the princess takes a step forward. ] Why.
[ Not a question. Perhaps it is an accusation, and with her tone it certainly may sound like that. A deeper, and truer, interpretation is that she has been concerned for her. ]
no subject
It's not like you don't have all the time in the world, alright? Calm down.
[But now that she's through with what felt like a cheap shot to her but probably wasn't much of an insult at all? She has to come up with an excuse other than 'I was scared of meeting you and also you piss me off, even now' because... just because.]
I was getting dressed and doing my hair. Gotta look the part if I'm courtin' a princess, don't I?
[She runs a hand through her hair. It's no different than normal. Just like the rest of her.]
Don't tell me you were worried about me?
[Now it's her turn for an accusatory tone. She doesn't like the thought of Kaguya worrying about her in the slightest. Their whole relationship still doesn't sit well with her, actually. If she was less selfish then sometimes she might feel bad for Kaguya for being stuck with her, but she isn't that type of girl.]
no subject
no subject
Not that she expected to need fresh breath, she would tell herself.]
What did you think had happened? I had died? Don't be such an idiot.
[She sneers that line out; yet another sniping remark aimed at the fact that the two of them no longer fight nearly enough for her liking. Which is to say they hadn't fought in a very long time, and Mokou hadn't died (natural causes like hunger or thirst not included) in a very long time, either.]
You sure you weren't afraid of being stood up? Imagine the shame a princess like you would feel, even if she only have, what, three subjects? [And, like, a billion or something rabbits and people on the moon but who cares. Mokou doesn't. At all.]
So, if you're done complaining? Did you wanna do anything special tonight?
no subject
The princess only smiles in contrast to Mokou's suddenly grumpy ad accusatory attitude. It's nice to see she has as much vigor as ever. Much been than what she had been all those years ago. ] You speak as if would even dare leave me to wait any longer or be alone. No-- that you came at all neither falls short nor surpasses my expectations of you.
no subject
Though she never, not once, followed through on those threats. To an outside observer, one of Kaguya's three subjects that were only just mentioned, it would seem more like a private joke by now. Only Mokou didn't appear to take it as a joke. She was always completely serious. She really would stand Kaguya up if she annoyed her badly enough.
But... she did feel bad about being late tonight because it wasn't on purpose. She just lost track of time - talking to Keine about her habits and choices and lack of care towards her own person.
And about her relationship with Kaguya and the fact that she should probably treat her a little bit better. She should probably start by not showing up late to their meetings and yeah that's when she realized she was late. And that's why she didn't really want to mention why she was late.
A sigh and a shrug was the only explanation she was going to give, even if she hadn't been asked to give one. Kaguya was probably hoping for one, or would expect one or something. She expected a lot, being so spoiled and all.]
I'm sorry, alright? I didn't mean to--[Gah she can already see Kaguya's smug smirk while she apologizes for making her mad. Just kill her now.] I didn't mean to be late, alright? I'm sorry.
no subject
At least Mokou does apologize. That is a vast improvement in of itself, especially in being mature. The smiles becomes less smug and more teasing now. ] ...Before I could accept an apology, I do believe some punishment is in order.
no subject
No, now her only reaction is one of minor - maybe a slightly more - annoyance. That and a curious look on her face, followed by her own attempt at a teasing retort.]
Isn't that a bit dirty for a princess to be saying? What kind of punishment were you even hoping to get out of me?
no subject
[ A sleeve to her mouth, but her eyes sparkle in amusement. ] That you so easily jumped to that-- just what were you thinking I was implying?
no subject
Or, more truthfully, she's simply imagining Kaguya doing something she really doesn't want to admit out loud.]
I wasn't... [She brings her own arm up to her face, less elegantly than Kaguya, clearly, trying to hide her embarrassed reaction. It isn't a particularly skillful effort at all.] You were the one who brought it up! What were you implying, huh!?
[There was no way - absolutely no way - she was going to say the sort of things she thought Kaguya meant. When a princess said 'punishment' was in order, a princess you were sort of dating, didn't that make you think of stuff like.
You know. Spanking? Physical abuse without the epic mutual murdering?
Ah, great, now her face was going even more red.]
You're so gross, Kaguya...
13
That isn't to say she hasn't been tempted. Mokou, especially - it would be trivial to make her a normal human, wouldn't it. She'd be dead by now, but she would have led a normal, happy life. Maybe even found it in her heart to forgive a woman she'd never be able to get her revenge on, settled down and closed her eyes for the last time, a peaceful expression on her face without a single regret tying her to the world.
... But she doesn't. Her work completed, she marches out into the bamboo forest, finds Mokou, and practically drags her to her house - under the pretense of protecting her, but mostly to have a rock around to keep her from submitting to temptation. Mokou would notice, of course. Mokou would stop her before she could do anything irreparable.]
I've told you before, you shouldn't be out on nights like this. I'm not the only beast that changes under the moon. [Her chastising doesn't have much life to it - she's given up on the idea of Mokou ever actually listening to her. At times she feels more like her mother than her... whatever they are, to one another. Keine isn't sure herself, she just knows Mokou's happiness is the first thing on her mind.
Which is frustrating, because it seems to be the last thing on Mokou's. She gives a half-there sigh and turns to look over her notes, making sure she hasn't forgotten to do anything tonight.]
Tea? Since you're here.
no subject
Mokou still sighed and rolled her eyes when she heard those, though. Especially when it was implied she was in danger.]
You might not be the only beast that changes under the moon but I'm probably one of the only immortals out there tonight. Or I was before you dragged me back here.
[She takes a seat on the floor, rocking back and forward impatiently and taking a look around the house she might as well call her second home.]
What if someone out there got lost? Who would save them if you're keeping me prisoner here?
[Okay maybe finding and helping humans lost tonight wasn't actually her reason. Maybe she was making her way to a certain other immortal's place of residence for a late night visit complete with bonus bloodshed. Or maybe she just wanted to go for a walk, sheesh.]
What, you're not going to offer me dinner? Just tea? Good thing I don't need to eat or I'd be pretty upset right now...
[She lets out an exaggerated sigh. A very exaggerated sigh.]
Tea will be fine, Keine-sensei.
no subject
The humans shouldn't be out on a night like this either - I've warned every one of them. [And they're more likely to listen to her warnings than Mokou here. She rattles it off impatiently, countering every point Mokou makes like, yes, a mother with a spoiled child.]
And you should have already had dinner, at this hour. You might not need food, but you still get hungry, don't you? [Her voice falters there at the end - when was the last time Mokou ate? It's only been a couple of days since the last time she forced her to eat dinner with her, but...
She sighs and sets the two cups down, looking back at Mokou, red eyes, fangs, and horns all sharp and pointed. Mokou's seen her like this before, more than once, but it's still quite different from the usual Keine.]
Do you want dinner, then? I'm sensible enough to have already ate, but I can fix you something if you haven't. [For one difference, she's actually letting the frustration slip quite plainly into her voice. She doesn't have the self-control nor the inclination to hide it.]
no subject
Yeah but humans are stupid with things like that. I mean, think about this, they don't call it The Bamboo Forest of the Lost for no reason, do they? No, but I still find dozens of them wandering around like they've got no fuckin' eyes. [She doesn't see much of a difference between the forest on the way to Eientei and going out during the full moon. It's all the same to her.]
At this hour? I didn't wake up until a few hours ago, actually. I wanted to stay up and see you. [See her like this, that is. She smiles when she says it, not bothering to think how Keine might feel about that statement at all.] I like seeing you like this.
But you're usually busy when you're like this so don't bother making me food. I ate a few hours ago [A phrase which Keine might recognize by now to mean 'a few days ago'] so I'm good to go.
[The feeling of Keine's frustration is actually pretty intense when she doesn't hide it and Mokou actively shrinks backwards into her own shirt. Maybe it's because she's busy with her work but Mokou shouldn't be bugging her like this, should she? Was this okay? Didn't she have some kind of right to do so considering she was her... friend? Best friend? Immortal friend? More than friend? Her Mokou?
What were they?]
...Hey, Keine. You're a teacher, right? I've got a question for you, teacher.
no subject
So she listens quietly as she mulls it over, silently reaching for a few things to eat - since she plans everything so meticulously around the full moon, she tends to go shopping the morning after just out of force of habit. She's a bit low on things to eat, as a result, but she can scrounge something together if she thinks about it.]
... It's fine. [She sighs, ashamed of herself for lashing out at Mokou like that. She can be, plainly speaking, an idiot, but she hasn't done anything wrong.] I'm already finished with everything. I can't sleep when I'm like this, so I was just planning on waiting it out.
[She gets to work on, well, scrounging, worrying at her lower lip when Mokou asks her question. It takes her a moment to realize that sharp teeth probably shouldn't be near her lips like this, and she hurries back to a frown before she can bite her skin open.]
You're too old to be one of my students, but I'll answer it if you answer mine. What do you like about me, like this? Why do you want to see it? [She's not ashamed, at least not of herself like this, but she's plainly a beast. Hair wild and unkempt, and as that near-yell at Mokou shows, emotions unchecked. When she was only a child, she spent her nights like this rampaging around. Not killing, of course not, and only making minor changes for lack of control over her powers, but she still raised quite a ruckus.
Even Mokou over there is triggering some response in some wild part of her brain - the woman is history given form, not just because of her age but because of her potential. She could and would see every moment of the future with her own eyes, until there was nothing left for her to see. She can keep herself under control, of course, but part of her's screaming at her to... she isn't even sure what. Not eat her, surely. She's never been a carnivore.]
no subject
What do I like about you like this? I don't know. I like seeing you busy, but I like seeing you more open to your wild side. You remind me of myself when I was younger. [More specifically; the few hundred years she spent attacking anything she came across.] If you're worried about losing control or anything then would it help you that it gets easier over the years?
[Though that took her hundreds of years of constant rampaging and she only calmed down thanks to a mix of running out of steam and tiring of it all. Maybe Keine wouldn't remember that part of the story, though.]
Anyway! I wanted to ask you... [she gulps and tightens her grip on her trouser leg. Then she gulps again. Finally she clears her throat.] What are we? Are we friends or am I... [And once again she goes through her routine of gulping and gripping and throat clearing.]
Am I your Mokou?
[That sounded much less cutesy in her head. Damn it all.]
no subject
But Mokou's encouragement makes her feel at least a little better. She glances back to watch Mokou, surprised at seeing her so awkward. It's a night of showing unusual sides for themselves for both of them, it seems. She shifts, unsure of what to say.]
We're not just friends, but... [She loves Mokou, of course, but being a historian has made her plainly aware that things end. History is history because it's no longer the present. Empires rise and fall, great men are born, live, and die...
Except for Mokou. Mokou is a permanent part of the world, until the moment it ends, like the moon outside. Keine isn't. Telling her that, living the sweet, blissful life of two lovebirds... it'd only make the moment she dies even more painful for Mokou, wouldn't it? Give her another regret weighing on her back for the rest of eternity.]
... Well, what am I to you?
no subject
You're my... [She takes a long sip of her tea, not wanting to say the only answer she can think of]... you're my Keine. That means you're very important to me, alright?
[Maybe not as important as, say, Kaguya but there isn't much that can be done about that. It's a sad fact that Mokou doesn't thinking about. Mainly because it pisses her off and confuses her to think that Kaguya is important to her in any way.]
Even if there was another Keine in my life then they wouldn't be as important as you. Because you're my Keine. Right?
[What Mokou is trying to say is that even if Keine is reincarnated or she meets someone just like her it wont be the same and that she loves her and only her. Thanks to a stunted emotional growth, though, she can't really find the words to say so.
Judging by her red face, though, one would think she had already said that.]
Isn't dinner ready yet?! Come on!!
no subject
It's touching and sweet, and it nearly breaks Keine's heart - and then that wild side sees something wrong and immediately moves to correct it, taking a few steps closer, crouching down to grab at Mokou's wrist, she isn't sure why.
She can smell her. Mokou smells of smoke and grilled bird and age, the same smell she gets from rotting parchment or the tallest trees and suddenly she understands exactly what it is she wants to do to Mokou. She gives a toothy smile.]
That's wrong. You're my Mokou. [She reaches for her other wrist, suddenly trying to push Mokou flat on her back - she's trying to fight it but suddenly her emotions are running wild, would be even if it wasn't a full moon.]
... I need you. I don't want to let you go.
no subject
Isn't that what I just said? [Was there a difference between what she had said and what Keine was saying now? Something felt different about it. That much was for sure. Plus there was the smile Keine was giving her. She was getting a slightly intense (for lack of a better word) feeling from it.] You gonna tell me why you're so happy all of a sudd--
[And then her second wrist is seized and she feels herself being pushed onto her back. It's enough of a shock to stop her question dead, but not enough to cause her to fight back. It's Keine who's pushing her after all. The same Keine who teaches classes and bothers her to eat and drags her out of stupid plans and danger. Her Keine wouldn't hurt her, so there's nothing to worry about at all. All she can really do when she thinks of it like that is let herself be pushed onto her back, even if she does have to take special care not to drop the tea in her hand.
Does Keine even notice she's still holding that?]
You don't have to let go of me, but I have to let go of this cup. [Clearly a master of priorities, perhaps a byproduct of her lifestyle? Maybe she should ask
KaguyaEirin about it one day.] I don't wanna spill the tea on your floor. You'll make me clean it.[And she adds something extra so that Keine doesn't think her feelings are being ignored which, Mokou admits, can happen quite often. Fujiwara no Mokou doesn't exactly keep her finger on the pulse of human emotion, sadly for both of them.]
And I need you, too, alright? But I'm not pinning you to any floors, am I? So are you sure this is something Keine-Keine wants or what?
no subject
She lets go of one of Mokou's wrists, takes the tea in her hand, calmly sets it aside - far to the side, to make sure they don't knock it over if they move.]
Better? [It comes out as more of a growl than a word - not a threat, but just as a result of what she's feeling. Mokou needs her too, and that's more than enough consent.
As for whether or not she really wants this, she isn't even sure. She wants this even on normal nights, yes, but whether or not she'd act on that desire is another matter entirely. Even if she wouldn't... when she was a child, when she raised a ruckus and broke things and fought and scrapped with weakling youkai and acted like it made her strong, she was sure that the Keine that came out with the full moon was the real her. She only felt truly alive on clear, moonlit nights.
She has tried to bury that part of herself, she has people counting on her to be sane and kind and sweet, her class, the people in the human village, but she wonders if some part of her doesn't still feel the same way. That sweet Keine-sensei is the fakery and the easily influenced beast is the real thing. It's not as if this desire is new, after all. She's just finally gotten the will to act on it.
She backs off, some, hands still on Mokou's wrists but slinking away, sitting on the floor in front of her to give her room to sit up.]
I don't know. It's hard to tell. But I don't want to wait until morning. When I look at you like this, it's like... [She worries at her lower lip again, far too focused on her thoughts to notice the fangs. She manages to keep from drawing blood, at least.]
It's like if I let a second slip by I'll be gone and you'll be alone. I don't want to let that happen without making sure you remember me.
no subject
Having Keine sit up a little and give her some space was almost surprising if the initial action hadn't been as surprising as it was, that is. Keine biting her lip doesn't go unnoticed by Mokou - and she actually winces at the sight. She's had her lip bitten off before and it's not a pleasant experience at all. She wants to reach out, touch Keine's lips and tell her it'll be fine, but she decides to let her finish speaking first.
And, like most things in her life, doing so ends up being something she regrets because there's not much she can really say to what she hears. Keine will, like almost everyone and everything Mokou knows (perhaps including Gensokyo itself) fade away into nothing with due time. Even when the universe comes to an end she will continue to be there, wont she? Death and life aren't part of her anymore.
She opens her mouth to speak a few times, noticeably saddened by the conversation going on, but eventually settles into a gentle and almost sincere smile.]
Keine... you don't have to worry that I'll forget you, alright? And you don't have to worry about letting seconds pass you by. And I'll never really be alone as long as I have-- [No wait fuck bringing up Kaguya right now would be so unromantic, maybe? She isn't even sure if Keine is jealous about that whole relationship so she cuts herself off right there] my memories of you, right?
[And great now she feels terrible about feeling guilty because she doesn't know why she feels guilty. Why is emotional thinking so hard?]
...And stop biting your lip, alright?
