get that murderboner on

THE MURDERGAME MEME

It's practically everywhere, so you should know the drill by now: take a few characters, put them in a brand new setting, whether it be a city, a prison, a school, you name it, and then suddenly get told that there's only one way to escape, and that's by one thing alone: murder.

Because you know, that's definitely a good idea, right?

But it's not that simple, of course. Each time a murder happens, there's going to be an investigation, and then a trial. Naturally, more often than not, you have to find the culprit or else. However, there are some games where the culprit can get off scot free... but that's only for you to figure out.

    MURDERGAME TYPE:
      1. Investigative. This type of murdergame relies on having specific culprits per trial, each one handpicked as a culprit or victim.
      2. Mafia. Specific characters are chosen to be either a group of killers or a single killer from the very beginning. Other roles may also be given to other characters, such as Doctor, Gunsmith, etc.

    SETTING:
      1. School. The type of setting that you would see in Dangan Ronpa, your mastermind has kidnapped you and forced you to go to school! You may or may not have some special "titles" to go along with it. Sure, you might be trapped, but at least it's a nice place to stay.
      2. Island. Have you seen Survivor? Basically, you're trapped on an island meant to survive; of course, the essentials may or may not be given to you, depending.
      3. Prison. No wonder you're in a murder game! You've done something really, really bad, haven't you? The rooms in this setting will most likely not be as comfortable, but hey, it's better than having to sleep on the cold hard ground.
      4. City. You're trapped in a rather spacious city where some rather strange happenings are going on. You somehow can't leave, but at least there's a lot of buildings to go and visit and you can actually see the sky! Too bad murder is still a thing.
      5. Wildcard. Hit me with your best shot, I'm sure there's some setting out there that can make for a good murder grounds.

    PROMPTS:
      1. Welcome to Hell, Enjoy Your Stay! You've only just woken up, so you don't exactly know what's the situation. But you don't seem to be alone; there are others who are with you; maybe they might know the answers?
      2. So How About that Murder? You've just been told by your Mysterious Mastermind that "hey, you've got to kill to survive" and that... can't possibly be right, can it? Can it?
      3. MOOOOOOTIVE! It's been quite some time and your mastermind is pretty much sick and tired of all of this fluffy and sweetness to the point that they've put their hands down and decided that they've got to do something about it. But what's it going to be this week?
      4. So Do You Want To Be A Mole? Probably not, but it seems that whoever is overseeing your game thinks that you'd be great to be the game's spy.
      5. Roles, Roles, Roles! Specific to the Mafia set up, sometimes you're given a specific role. Maybe you can pass out weapons or guns to people. Or perhaps you can speak to the dead. Maybe you can block someone from killing for the evening. Whatever it is, you're special. Just make sure not to get killed. (For ideas on roles, feel free to utilize this list here!)
      6. So you're Mafia now, eh? You are one of the elite. The ones chosen to vote for who dies each week. Whether it's by choice or by chance, you've got a dirty job to do and you have to do it... or else. But hey, at least you're not alone! You've got some buddies to help you do the work with you.
      7. What's that? Somehow, somewhere, you've managed to find some sort of machine that takes a special kind of coin and pops out some sort of item? Who knows.
      8. Free Time Events Throughout the week, you're free to do as you please, so what are you going to do, even with the threat of murder hanging over your heads? Might as well get to know your fellow captives, right?
      9. Kill or Be Killed Whether you're mafia or just a solo killer, it's time to start your murder on! There's plenty of ways to do it. So how's it gonna be done this time?
      10. IT'S INVESTIGATION TIME! Ding dong bing bong, a body has been discovered! Whether or not you'll actually find any clues, however, to who did it might be a bit of a toughie.
      11. Let's figure this out The trial starts and everyone's eyes are on everyone else. Whether you're given a list of suspects or not, there's a killer to catch! But will you catch the right one? Or scapegoat someone else entirely innocent?
      12. I remember...! In some murder games, memories are key. Every Sunday, you remember something from your past that you've somehow forgotten. But why was it lost in the first place? And why are you remembering it now, all of a sudden? It is a mystery, truly.
      13. And the mastermind is-? Is it truly someone outside of the group? Or perhaps it was one of your friends after all? It's time to finally finish this, solve all the mysteries, defeat the evil twisted things, maybe get the Golden End and go home.
      14. WILDCARD Anything else that I'm missing? JUST JAM AND PLAY IT OUT!

( I am completely interested in playing out Ran as an unwilling mafia member, her reacting to a very heavy motive or memories, but I can work with other things, too. )

[ This madness has been going on for closer to two months than not, now, and slightly over half of the people who were originally here alongside them are dead now. Either having been murdered, or having been executed for failing to fool them with their murder. The whole facility has started to feel underpopulated, arguably even lonely. Those that are left, well. There's a certain inevitability to the idea that one of them might kill one of the others, so it can't be said that there's complete trust, but it certainly can be said that there's a bond of necessity.

Even with all the losses and all the motives so far.

There's been some hope - discoveries they've made which might point towards the mastermind, little things which implied that they might bring back the dead. At one of their get togethers last week someone even whipped out a ouija board to confirm they are around in some capacity. Basically everyone has someone they knew and liked (probably several, honestly) on the other side by now.

It's really for this reason that the motive this week is so insidious, it's using that limited hope against the survivors. Namely, the mastermind has promised that they do in fact know the dead are still around. But they're going to erase them out of existence if there isn't a murder this week.

... Like with basically every motive, Kiritsugu's face is impassive. No surprise there, really. However, he does do one of his tell-tale signs of when something's bothered him particularly much - reaches into his pocket for cigarettes which aren't there, stops short, and then goes back to impassive. ... Some one will kill this week, that's a certainty now. Even with what they've unearthed, there's probably not enough time.

A very distant man ( to say the least ) the assassin's not really been one for comforting people. But he does scan the room for reactions and lingers for if anyone did want to talk to him or is reacting particularly poorly. ]

[ Ran was not only the daughter of a private detective, she was in love with one as well, which meant that she should have been used to seeing bodies drop, bleeding and dry. But this supposed "game", as they called it - a disgusting term that made her feel sick to her stomach - was a lot worse than being followed around by a god of death, a shinigami.

But in spite of that, Ran had decided to form bonds, to make the attempt to trust even if things looked grim.

She held hope in her chest, knowing that there couldn't be anything worse. But then the motive was thrown in their faces, not only confirming the idea that the dead still existed in some shape or form. The motive itself makes her turn almost pale, it's nothing in comparison to the breakdown she had for previous motives - especially the one where they spoke about killing other captives, people that didn't deserve it even more than she did - but it's still horrible.

Even though she was strong and even helped out a lot in the investigations and trials, this is still something that causes her to freeze up, aqua eyes widening in shock— ]

They can't...

[ Lips quiver, almost as if she's trying so damn hard to convince herself that nothing's going to happen. That everything's going to be fine. But it's only when the tears start, a sign that she can't stop them even if she wants to.

She hates it, she hates it so much, and yet she can't stop herself from shaking. ]

Haven't they already had enough?

[ No, they haven't. Honestly, he's not sure... well, no, this must be near the end. There's no way that they can afford for the captives to kill each other much more. It simply wouldn't be practical at this point.

... He still wishes he had cigarettes.

The man stands there impassively still, but when it's clear no one else is immediately going to the detective's daughter, he resolves himself to handle things. He walks one, two steps over to her, and ... ]

This incentive shows a certain amount of desperation. It's becoming clear little is going to motivate us to kill each other anymore.

But it's still wrong to murder.

[ It's a bit hypocritical of her to say that, given that by voting, the masterminds were, in a way, making them all into murderers. It's horrible to the point that it makes her not only feel sick, it makes her wonder what would Shinichi think if he knew this was going on.

Would he hate her for being a murderer?

Or would she hate the situation?

She's worried that it might be both, and that scares her to her very core. But it's only when Kiritsugu talks that she brings a sleeve her red, puffy eyes, wiping them dry. ]

Even if it's... for a reason like this.

[personal profile] deathaccel 2017-09-13 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
[ He doesn't agree- well no, that's not strictly true. He doesn't care would be the better way to put it. A man who wanted to be a hero, he has long, long since failed well before he ever came here, before there we murders week after week and they voted the killers to their deaths. Sometimes, you might even say that one or the other were friends.

... The murderer last week was particularly frustrating for him, honestly. He has thought that they would survive this together.

Some might think that it's amazing that he himself didn't take action - he'd been a suspect more than once - and really... even he's impressed. He's considered it, more than once. Devised counter strategies to kill everyone here, determining that the greatest good would be to kill the masterminds to stop them from doing this ever again. Because they would, of course, once this was over. But something that stopped him.

Even he's not fully sure what. ]

You're still saying that, after this long. [ There's some mild... surprise in is tone. ] There's strength in that.

Is it wrong to think that way?

[ She asks in a way that's rather curious, but at the same time, she's surprised, too, in her own way. She didn't think that she would manage to get some sort of slight emotion from Kiritsugu of all people, considering how he barely seems to show any emotion during the motives barring the occasional times he'd light up a cigarette.

To be honest, she kind of misses that.

Sure, she isn't an advocate for smoking - in fact, she's the type that would grab it and give a bit of a lecture on how it's bad for your health and how it'll get into other people's lungs--

But it's also something that makes her nostalgic. A reminder of her father, who she hasn't seen in weeks, months, even. He's not the only person she hasn't seen in forever, however. But it still hurts, and she's not sure if it will ever stop hurting. ]

I don't know if I'm really strong. [ And she's clearly not talking about in the physical way, here. After all, it states in her profile that one of her skills is karate and it isn't as if she's hidden the fact that she's not only a black belt, but that she's won competitions, either. ] Thank you, though. I just-

[ Teeth lightly run across her lower lip, a little nervous as she swallows down hard. ]

I'm tired of seeing people die week after week... All the friends I've made, dying. And everyone being scared that they might join them.

[ That she'll die, too. But her biggest fear isn't dying herself. No, the biggest fear has always been seeing the ones she loves die. It's why this motive hits hard, because it's not just for her sake. ]

The ones behind this... are forcing someone- [ Correction. ] Are forcing us to become murderers. And it's not right. We have to figure out how we can save them without having to resort to killing.

[ It's strange, talking about ghosts and revival like this. If she were home, she'd be chastised for believing in spirits by detectives. ]

There has to be another way. Right?
deathaccel: (Sanguinius)

[personal profile] deathaccel 2017-09-15 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ He wasn't lying- there is strength in that. A conviction, even if it's a half-baked conviction, can be a source of strength if it survives time and oppression by other forces. And have have certainly seen oppression from outside forces. To the point that, the assassin feels he can confidently think, that anyone who can speak so hopefully at this point is either fully deluded or has some sort of core to them which won't be shaken.

... It's for that reason that he rules her out, mentally, as the murderer which will happen at the end of the week.

... When did he start to think like that? Maybe he had always expected people to kill, especially once the motives came, but now he sees it as an inevitability, like the dig of the clock in the morning and evening. ]

It's not impossible. Like I said, if they're pushing an incentive like this, they're clearly desperate to make us continue to act on them. That also means everything we've uncovered so far isn't far from the truth.

[ However- ]

Time is the problem. It's possible we won't find anything decisive enough to make them pause before the week's over. It's possible this will be the last incentive that will work. But it might still work.

[ Or at least that's his. Uh, realist's take on it. ]

[personal profile] talkwithmyfist 2017-09-15 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true.

[ She's managed to calm down a bit, but at the same time, she seems to mull everything over in her head now that she made the decision not to cry anymore. Even if Kiritsugu might think that someone will definitely kill, Ran still doesn't want to think in such a way.

That's just too sad. ]

If they're desperate though... there's definitely a reason for it. Like "why do we have to continue"?
deathaccel: (Fulgrim)

[personal profile] deathaccel 2017-09-15 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless they're bluffing, or certain people will act, we can rule out them needing the souls of the dead.

[ Which had been something he'd been considering for a while now, a pet theory. He's not... certain, though, and it reflects in his tone when he says it. But they're having the conversation, so. He might as well allow for uncertainties while they're theorizing. at this point, Ran is every bit his equal. ]

[personal profile] talkwithmyfist 2017-09-16 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, [ And she can't help the shudder that runs down her spine as she thinks about it; even though they're her friends, ghosts still gives her the chills. It doesn't help that they were actually using an oujia board to contact them and it actually worked to the point that it spooked her. ] I... don't think they would be bluffing about that. If they were certain that someone was going to kill, they could have given a completely different motive that didn't involve the ghosts so they don't openly reveal their hand.

[ Ran hums about that a little, thinking it over in her head. She may not be a detective, but it isn't as if she's a complete idiot. ]

Unless... they want us to think that. But I don't think it's very likely. So their motivations are probably something else.
deathaccel: (Leman Russ)

[personal profile] deathaccel 2017-09-16 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm. Though their awareness of the spirits and the ability to erase them means that they have some skill with magecraft. That's in line with some other discoveries.

[ Or... you know. Scifi shit. But he's a mage hunter, he's going to assume magic until proven otherwise. ]

[personal profile] talkwithmyfist 2017-09-17 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha... it's still so weird to think that magecraft might be real.

[ She only half believes that it's true, but based on everything that's happened so far, it's hard to disbelieve it, either. ]
deathaccel: (Perturabo)

[personal profile] deathaccel 2017-09-18 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a leg up there; I did grow up around it.

[ Even if the mechanics of whatever magecraft - or perhaps even magic - here are clearly different to the ones he's familiar with. ]
