[Cassian hadn't been counting on the U-wing violently picking them up off the beach he was sure he and Jyn would die on.
He had been so sure - so sure that that would be where he met his demise - with Jyn in his arms - the light blinding his eyes - the ground shaking beneath them - the heat of the blast burning his skin.
He felt it though. It was so close - they were so close to being annihilated - and then they weren't.
Instead, they're inside a U-wing, being piloted by a Rebel pilot. She's shouting at something or someone. The U-wing rumbled as it shoots through the sky, trying to get clear of the blast from the Death Star.
Cassian is lying on his back on the floor, looking through one of the windows at the blinding light.]
[After some time spent healing in the medbay, Cassian is allowed to move back to his room. It's small, windowless, and not very homey. He has very few possessions - the result of not having much of a home after he left his home planet of Fest at the age of 6. But he doesn't mind. His room is used mostly for sleeping anyway and he rarely has alone time.
But now he's found himself with quite a bit of alone time since his commanding officers have grounded him for the time being. They say that because of Scarif, everything's too hot right now and that Cassian (and Jyn) needs to lay low. He's fine with that, but now he has nothing to do - well, that's not entirely true - there is Jyn after all.]
[ Jyn is given a small room of her own once she's cleared from medbay. It's before Cassian leaves so she spends most of her time going there to visit him since she was informed by Mon Mothma personally that she was grounded. She thought she was used to being alone. Preferred it for a long time.
Not now... after what they went through, after losing the others, she doesn't want to continue to be that way. A small part of her is afraid she'll just end up hurt and alone again but she keeps shaking that feeling off. Jyn won't admit to being afraid of much. But there's no way she's going to waste this second chance. Because that's what it is.
So, when Cassian is finally released from the medbay, he won't have much time to spend in his room, Jyn knocking on his door. Once he opens it, she will smile at him. ]
[The time he spent in the medbay was made just a bit more pleasant with Jyn around. Even after she was discharged, she came by every single day. Seeing her face first thing in the morning was its own form of medication, healing invisible wounds and easing emotional pain. Despite their losses, she came in with a smile just for him
When he too was discharged, it had been early in the morning, way before Jyn was up and at his bedside. Instead of waiting, he went back to his room. He inspected himself, shirtless, in the mirror of his bathroom, seeing all the slowly fading bruises from his 20-foot fall on his chest and back. They're ugly - but they aren't scars. They won't be permanent.
When someone knocks on his door, he goes to open it.]
[ Her smile widens when she sees his, unable to stop it (or maybe unwilling to). She tilts her head in the direction she plans to go, a pack already on her back with the most basic of things. A little bit of food, water, blaster. Just things they might need while they were out. Her time with Saw taught her it was never bad to be prepared.
As she starts walking, expecting him to keep up. ]
[She's leaving by the time he registers that she wants him to follow. He quickly puts on a shirt and grabs a jacket before he's closing his door and jogging to catch up with her.]
Where are we going? [He asks this as he's putting his jacket on.
But something tells him she's not going to give up their destination easily.
Yavin 4 is a jungle planet and while the Alliance has cleared quite a bit of space for their headquarters, including paths around their compound, a lot of it is unexplored.]
Cassian matches her stride, walking beside her as they make their way through the building and outside. Everyone else is rushing around the base, prepping X and Y wings and any other starfighters and bombers available - definitely getting ready for battle.]
Do you even know where you're going?
[He has to ask. Cassian has lived on Yavin 4 for several years - Jyn, only a week or two.]
[ It's been a common sight for her since she was cleared from medbay. A part of her feels guilty for not being apart of it but then she knows from the still healing cuts that she has done her part. And since she is still alive, there's a further part for her to play yet. For now, she'll try to mind the orders she was given.
It's not that hard to do. She still feels exhausted deep in her bones.
She's grateful for his question, making her focus on what she had set out to do. ]
An idea? [He quirks his brows, smirking.] I hope this idea doesn't involve trudging through the surrounding jungle.
[As much as he would love to entertain whatever Jyn has in mind for them, he's still healing. If he breathes in too deeply, sharp pain erupts in his chest and back. The doctors in the medbay told him to take it easy for a while - which he'll do if that makes him heal faster.]
[Despite not having a lot of free time, he has spent some time exploring the jungle via the paths that the Alliance has laid down. The jungle is vast and one can easily get lost if one strays off the path. But Cassian finds comfort when he can no longer hear or see the Alliance base. He's just a tiny speck in the universe.]
[It shouldn't have surprised him when she takes his hand, but it still does and he can't help the grin that erupts on his face from the gesture. He even threads their fingers together.]
If I remember correctly, this path leads to a small lake and waterfall.
[His heart feels just as full, but he doesn't want to think about what it means - he's afraid of the reality, almost. As if what they have is real and legitimate - he's never been in that position before.]
I've been a few times in the past. It's very quiet. And the water's clean if you wanted to swim.
[He listens to her statement, about him walking - he knows how lucky he is, especially when he thinks about the death of their friends.]
I know.
[He leans over and presses his lips to the side of her head just because - just because he needs to feel close to her - him wanting her is some of the most intense emotions he's ever felt.]

Jyn. [He smiles gratefully.]
I would love to.

Somewhere.

Yes and no.

Let's.

Shooting him a smile over her shoulder, ]
Yeah, it does. Just found it the other day. Wanted to bring you out here as soon as you got out of medbay.

Maybe when I'm healed all the way, we can.

We'll see, Captain.
