insomnia;

the i n s o m n i a meme

It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?

• Post with your character (note the name and fandom in the subject).
• Other people reply to you by generating a number from 1 to 10.
• Have fun!

01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.
10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario.

[Ocelot was up and about pacing along the long walkways of Mother Base. It was a cool night out and he could feel the fresh salt spray of the ocean mist around his face. Turning he heard footsteps that could only belong to one man. A man he knew so well.]

Evening, Boss. Can't sleep?

[ Keeping irregular hours is a tool of the trade by now, broken schedules and sleepless nights every bit as routine as forcing a combat-weary body to wind down in cramped helicopters for 30-minute segments at a time. There's nothing particularly extraordinary by now about being awake when the military clock reads single digits— everyone experiences insomnia in equal measures in this line of work— so Snake approaches Ocelot's comment as something neural. A casual greeting, not an accusation. ]

More or less. [ He tips his head in acknowledgment, then moves to line himself next to his adviser by the railings, upper body pitched forward towards the sea to catch the breeze. ] Anything to report?

[Ocelot moved over slightly to allow his boss to lean against the railings. The cowboy didn't have that much to report only that he'd trained up another dozen or so new recruits. They were doing well. Although, Ocelot wanted them to be the best. They had to be for Diamond Dogs.]

The men's training is going well. Trained up a dozen yesterday and most picked up aiming and reloading, whilst under pressure pretty well. I like to add a little bit of creativity whilst training them up. Keeps them on their toes.

[As in showing off with his twin Tornadoes when not showing the men how to use their guns. Adam smiled fondly at his boss and then looked out to the rolling ocean below.]

Want to talk? You're not usually one to wander the struts at night like me. [Cats went walkies at night.]

[ 'Creativity'. He can only guess as to what that ominous word entails; people are consistently under the impression that Kaz is the frightening one to contend with, but Venom is of the opinion that someone as inscrutable as Ocelot is the one to look out for.

Not that that's a criticism. Let's be real, Ocelot is great at his job.

Satisfied with that status update, Venom returns that smile with a ghost of one of his own, elbows settled on cool metal, fingers itching for a cigar.
]

Only because I do enough wandering during the day. [ Ocelot said so himself: Afghanistan is huge.

He also acknowledges that this sounds like a deflection, so after a beat, he appends:
] What about?

[Ocelot could usually tell when something was bothering the old soldier. It was a look in his eye. A change in the expression on his scarred face. All the signature signs of a man needing to talk about something buried inside of him. The gunslinger had spent most of his life hypnotising and manipulating people in some way. Call it instinct.]

That's true. Wandering on foot and sitting on horseback. I know how much you do out in the desert, Boss. I'm proud of the fact that you do all of that.

[He offered the other man a slow smile and leaned on the railings.]

I know you, John. I know something's botherin' you. You can tell me.

[Jack knew he really shouldn't be using the Globe of Belief as a way to track someone down for no reason past his own personal curiosity. He knew it, and yet he'd done just that... in order to find Big Boss some time after their brief back and forth via iDroid.

The legend himself was apparently on a mission in the Soviet Union, though the Globe did nothing but offer his location and gave up no details on his purpose there. Since he was finally somewhere with bearable temperatures, Jack decided this would be the perfect opportunity to stop by for a visit.

He was aware that if Snake was somewhere by himself, there was the chance he might need to rely on stealth. That wasn't typically an issue for Jack, invisible most of the time anyway, but he didn't want to accidentally cause trouble somehow. Keeping that in mind, after spotting the mercenary in a clearing, he pulled his hood up over his head and padded over quietly on bare feet, his hands clutching his staff excitedly as he approached.]

Big Boss?

[ The funny thing about this situation is that Jack knows exactly what Venom looks like, whereas Venom is still under the impression that that text conversation he had at 3 am on Mother Base was either with: a) a sentient snowman with opposable thumbs, or b) a military man with an unfortunately festive codename. If there's one thing he hasn't anticipated, it's the existence of an ostensibly teenage boy who has the power of snow and the ability to sneak up behind him when he's on a one-man mission to extract potentially important blueprints from an enemy base.

Again. Weirder things have happened, but still.

The fact of the matter is that Venom isn't expecting visitors. Especially ones that pad up to him in silence and surprise him by knowing his name— that's alarming, which means that his first instinct is to reach for his tranquilizer gun and point it at the hooded figure in one smooth, seamless motion.
]

—Drop your weapon.

[ Is that...a staff...???? Did this guy really bring a staff to a potential gun fight?? Now V's officially seen everything. ]
