Some weird combo of 3 and 10 and good with cw
Where are you heading?
[He asks after he puts the car back in gear and drives the speed limit down the dark road.]

Besides, it's easier to escape if he's got the window down. You know, just in case.
Bucky sits there with the seat-belt strapped across his chest and resisting the urge to pick at it. It's not like he used to care about them that much on the missions he does remember and he'll admit it doesn't feel real comfortable having the thing on, trying to tell himself that he isn't tied down, it's so he doesn't get catapulted through the damn window if his driver gets into an accident.
Next city over if you're heading in that direction. [ Bucky doesn't say "as far as you're going" but that's basically what he means. He's constantly checking the mirrors despite himself, looking for lights behind them that move wrong, don't belong ]
You usually pick up hitchhikers?
no subject
Levi doesn't glance much at him. He focuses on the dark road ahead of them. The next city was quite the drive, at least 40 minutes if he sticks to the speed limit. He wonders just how long this guy was out in the middle of no where.]
No. [Why tonight, he wasn't sure. He was just in a decent mood.] You usually hitchhike?
[If Bucky notices, the car is pretty spotless. Not even a blade of grass or a trace of mud on the carpet. If he kept looking he would see a photo of his driver, a woman with glasses and a taller man with blonde on the visor. The photo showed them all in army uniforms.]
You picked a shitty road, it barely gets traffic at night.
no subject
Yeah. Can't afford a car, so I hoof it.
[ If it's an emergency, then he steals it. It's also a good way to put himself on the radar more than he wants to which he tries not to do it unless there's no other choice. Relying on people's charity seems to work out for now.
Bucky's already noticed the picture. He's also been checking to make sure this guy isn't some random undercover cop or a SHIELD agent before he slides through the passenger's door. When he sees the army uniforms, he finds himself relaxing slightly. Army. He does remember parts of that, piecemeal like a jigsaw thrown off the table. He'd liked being in the army. Closest thing to family he had before Hydra. ]
You're telling me. [ Bucky reminds himself to be friendlier, at least to pretend. He shifts, careful not to rub his dirty jacket against the seat or the car side more than he has to. It's so clean that he'd thought it was new at first, despite the evidence on the tires saying otherwise ] I appreciate you picking me up, by the way. My feet could use the vacation.

The music in the car is low, some kind of jazz or something calming of that nature plays through the speakers. It was low enough that he could still hear the hum of the car as they speed down the road.]
You must have been walking a shit ton.
[There wasn't a town for miles. It was just woods and winding roads. He glances over to him, taking in his passenger's state now. Damn he looks as bad as he smells. He wonders if he had been camping in the woods or something. Must have been. Maybe he was a mountain man? Nah, he didn't have the beard for it. Must be homeless. He couldn't judge the guy too much. There had been a time in his own life where that had been his situation. Maybe that was why he picked him up.]
Do you know someone in the next town? [He would feel bad just dropping him off, alone in the streets. The least he could do was give the guy a shower and feed him before he goes off to disinfect his car at the local 24/7 car wash. He opens his mouth to say something else, but closes it as his eyes flicker to his rear view mirror. He thought he saw headlights. It was so late, who else in their right mind would be out besides an insomniac like himself? His eyes narrow, but after an instant they are gone and back to darkness. His eyes go back to the road after a moment.]

Basically. Keeps me on my toes, I guess. [ The truth is he hasn't had a whole lot of human interaction for awhile: his choice. Talking too much left too many tells, too much that could possibly leave a trail that he's been making sure stays as cold as he can get it. This is probably the longest conversation he's had in months, Bucky shifting uncomfortably ]
Yeah, I know some folks. Hoping they won't shut the door in my face since, y'know.
[ Look at him. He knows what he looks like. The lie doesn't come as easy as he wishes it was. It wasn't like he had to do much lying on the fly when he was doing Hydra's dirty work - it was a lot of point, shoot, retrieve, come back to base.
Bucky wouldn't mind the jazz normally. It's low enough that he can listen over it and it's very...not aggressive. It might even be relaxing if it wasn't for the fact he's aware he's hemmed in on all sides by the car, he's busy trying to come up with more details for a lie and...why is Levi so interested in his rear view mirror?
He resists the urge to rubberneck, keeping his eyes stonily forward. At most he risks a glance at the passenger's side mirror and what he sees spikes his adrenaline. Lights. They disappear and then they're back and they're approaching fast, faster than he likes. For a second he hopes the driver will swing around, pass them.
That red and blue strobe says no such luck. ]
What's wrong? [ Bucky plays dumb even as his hand slides inside his grimy jacket, resting on the release of his shoulder holster. He told himself he was done killing and he was, he really was. If it was Hydra come to collect, well. That doesn't count. ]
no subject
[He was a blunt person, of course he was gonna call it out. He almost sold it but his voice was what gave him away, and the fact he went so quiet afterwards. Probably thinking up something else to go with his story.]
You- [He cut himself off when he saw the lights reappear, very close and coming fast. His grip tightens on the wheel as his eyes flickered to the dash. He is going to speed limit, and he knows the car is in fine condition. He drives it every night down these roads. Why made this night any different besides his passenger?]
Dunno.
[His eyes shift again to his passenger. He notices that hand in his coat. His military mindset immediately makes the connection.] But something tells me I should be asking you that.
[He wasn't making an effort to slow down yet though.]
no subject
Or he can wait. Let Levi do the driving and see what the cop does. Maybe it's just a broken tail light.
His hand tightens around his handgun. Bucky thinks he's showcasing some serious self-control by not taking the easy way and drawing it from the get-go ]
It isn't important. Why don't you pull over?
[Bucky sits there trying to look like he isn't worried and knowing that he's doing a piss-poor job of it. His face settles into a mask as he keeps an eye on the mirrors, jaw set. He'll have a better chance of dealing with the cop - or the agent, he has no idea if that's even a real cop - once the car's stopped. Plus the handcuffs. Push comes to shove, he can handcuff Levi to the cruiser once he's done with the cop]
Nice and easy.
[Levi might fight back. He'll cross that bridge later]
no subject
Got it.
[His voice is steady, and his face is still as expressionless as ever. The only thing that might betray his nerves is the death grip he has on the wheel. Other than that, he honestly doesn't look very alarmed by the threat, even though he knows it is there. There wasn't much he could do right now. His mind was already looking for an answer to this. He had a knife under his seat, but against a gun? Well, he'd have to be fast, but he could do it. Cut his wrist, maybe his neck, ribs were a good shot too. He honestly didn't want to go down that road, he didn't mind killing, but if it could be avoided it was always the best thing. And he really didn't want to clean blood out of the seats and carpet.
The car starts to slow down as he pulls over to the side of the road. His hands were still gripping the wheel tight as he looks out the rear view mirror and sees the cop car right behind them. The cop isn't out yet though, he has time to get something out of the man beside him.]
Cut the shit and talk.
[Maybe not the best thing to say to someone with a gun...] I can't understand the situation if you don't say something.

Bucky's mouth presses into a thin line as he checks the mirror again, going with the short version that doesn't involve saying by the way, I assassinated political officers for decades ]
I've done stuff I'm not proud. Pissed off a lot of people and I think that might be one of them. [ Maybe that's the watered down, light version. Bucky's well aware that he's doing everyone he murdered for Hydra a disservice by downplaying it. He still does it anyway because they're dead, that cop might not be a cop and he thinks he wants to live. Bucky hasn't worked out if he's being a coward.
The cop kills his engine, just a large shape exiting the vehicle, no distinguishable features. Bucky wets his lips, glancing over at Levi and he's taking it surprisingly well considering he could be in the middle of crossfire a few seconds from now. The man has a hell of a poker fast, maybe even better than his ]
I'll handle it if it looks like this isn't a normal traffic stop.
[ He isn't Steve, he doesn't say something like "trust me" or anything like that. ]
no subject
Just don't do something you are going to regret.
[Levi spoke lowly before the cop comes to the window and shines a flashlight into Levi's face and then at Bucky's. His eyes narrow and his head turns back towards the wheel so his eyes can adjust again.]
What is it?
[Maybe not the best start to things. The cop asked where they were heading. Not a odd question considering the time, but he didn't even ask for ID first. Levi glances back, taking a hand off the wheel to cover the light from getting in his eyes. Once he did that, he could see this man wasn't even wearing a uniform. This poor bastard has no idea, or maybe he did.]
Home. Is there a problem?
no subject
Bucky leans out of the way of the flashlight, trying to keep it subtle instead of obvious, trying to resist that first instinct Hydra implanted in him which was don't leave witnesses. His hand aches slightly from how tight he's gripping the gun under his jacket, heart slamming in his chest as he listens to Levi talking with the cop, glancing out from under the ratty baseball cap he picked up a few months ago and aware of his teeth grinding.
The cop asks for Levi to step out of the car, saying something about a suspect and he wants him against the side. Hands where he can see them. It doesn't escape Bucky's notice that the invitation outside doesn't extend to him. Red flags all over the place to a paranoid on the run.
At this point Bucky's convinced that this cop isn't one. He's trying to get Levi clear but also keep his target in a better kill zone, doors and glass and a metal frame that could slow him down. It's what he would do if he was in his position.
Depending on what Levi does, Bucky's prepared to start some hell the moment he sees the cop's hand inch toward his holster.]
no subject
The red flags reach Levi as well. This guy wasn't a cop, and he is now in the middle of something a bit bigger than just giving a stranger a ride into the city. Damn, well that was his choice. No use in regretting it now. He has another choice to make now; take the knife from under his seat and gut the 'cop', or trust the stranger to not get him killed.]
And are you just pulling over every car you see on the road?
[The cop wasn't liking his back talk, but it was enough of a distraction that Levi could reach under his seat. He was quick in his reach. It was almost too subtle to even see, but he made it more obvious for Bucky to see him place the switch blade in the hem of his pants as he exits the car. If the stranger wanted him dead, he would have done so when he saw the lights in the mirror. He didn't know the man though, and he certainly didn't know about his aim. He would trust him for now, but if things went south he felt a bit more comfortable with something in his hand.]
Because, if you're talking about my dirty friend. He's had a hard night. Idiot thought that camping in the woods was a bright idea. Called my ass to get him when he realized bears were out there.
[His eyes glance over to the man in the car, as did the cop for a moment before he turned his attention back to Levi. The cop almost seems convinced the way Levi lies so seamlessly. Levi thought they were in the clear for a moment, but that was before the cop asked him again to get against the car. A noise of annoyance left Levi. His eyes narrow into a glare before he leaned against the hood of the car, facing the cop with his hands on the metal.]
no subject
Bucky doubts the cop is buying the story from what he can hear through the open window. It's a good story, believable but he figures this guy knows what he looks like, probably saw too much of his face when he pulled them over.
The cop take the opportunity to handcuff Levi once he's against the hood. The other cuffs he pulls out from his pocket are very not standard-issue - they're triple reinforced and magnetized, the edges glowing electric blue as the cop suddenly pushes Levi away from the hood of the car and - ideally - out of harm's way.
Then he turns to the car and makes the mistake of coming around the driver's side.
Bucky takes the opportunity to slam his shoe into the door and it comes shooting off with one good mule kick, the screech of metal feeling the air as it slams into the cop ]
