Bodyguard

the bodyguard meme

You're a pop star, or a royal, or maybe even the last of your kind who will bring about the Earth's redemption. Whatever the case may be, you're in a position that may be a bit dicey if you attract the wrong kind of attention.

And you're a bodyguard, a soldier, a knight - a protector. Somehow, you've been roped into protecting this person. You'll be rewarded, of course. The work may be cut out for you, but just do your job, keep your head down, and it'll go smooth.

Except for when the two of you break the bounds of professionalism and feelings begin to flourish. Being in such close quarters may get you to see the other in a different light, and saving someone's life just may be the ultimate form of intimacy.

Could this be the real danger? To feel so strongly for the one you've sworn to protect...are you compromised?

How to Play
1. Comment with your character and preferences, being sure to put if you want to play the guard, the guarded, or either. Also, you may want to put if you prefer fluffy, angsty, or smutty interaction - or have no preference.
2. Comment to others.
3. There are no prompts, because there are so many potential options there could be a hundred. Feel free to play anything: the beginnings of the relationship, just meeting, getting used to each other/not getting along at first, the obligatory first time, a threat on the protected's life and how their protector responds, how the feelings between the two has changed the protection, etc. Your only limit is you.

[Hey, this is actually my canon. Guarded, and likely to run headlong into magical danger at the drop of a hat. Any takers to be bodyguarding the most frustrating man on the planet?]

[First, oh my god. Second, would you like a S2 scenario or S1?]
becausemagic: (omg)

Well, now I'm excited

[First, oh my god! HI! That's the most exciting. Second, I have seen all of s2 now and I would love more adventures at any time. Good with anything! Post s2 trying to make things work is always fun? Whatever you like.

Also, as Eve, I think you definitely need my upfront joyful permission right now to manhandle Flynn however you like at any time. Go for it!]

[The thing about being a Guardian was that there was never any real time off. One magical mishap right after another. Which was great, because doing nothing drove Eve crazy.

But dealing with more fictional characters turned real was still a real trip. Eve didn't think she was ever going to get used to it. Especially when it was something as crazy as the creepy general from The Most Dangerous Game.

Who was having a great freaking time chasing them down and taking shots at them with the reload time of a hunting rifle if the seconds between shots was accurate.

They had been running for what felt like hours but was more like three minutes. Hooray for hiking trails right? At least there weren't any civilians nearby. So far.]

Flynn I need a plan!

[She had plenty of ideas on how to take the guy out if he were a real person. But a fiction could just keep coming back. She needed a solution that was more permanent.]

How do we stop this guy?
becausemagic: (I've had better days)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-01-13 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Skidding to a halt and putting his back to the nearest large tree, Flynn threw her a glance.]

Possibilities! Either we play into the story, since that's the only thing that'll have any real effect on him, or we take out the source! His summoner. I didn't see anyone nearby though. You? They might not even be here. They might just have pulled this gun-toting lunatic up for fun and turned him loose!

Or we might just be in Texas. We are sure he's a fictional, right?

[He darted a look around the side of his tree and yanked back just in time to avoid being hit as a bullet slammed into the bark. He took advantage of their hunter's pause to reload, and flicked open the pen-knife from his pocket, popping the bullet from the tree to investigate it.]

Well, that's not helpful at all.

[He threw the bullet aside and gave Eve his best devil-may-care grin.]

How are you at making traps? We can at least wound him if we can get ahead and set something up. That's within his story.
mamabaird: (pic#)

[personal profile] mamabaird 2016-01-15 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Flynn!

[Eve shouts as a warning as she pulls him back to safety and hears with disturbing clarity the thunk of an old fashioned bullet splintering wood. Too close. That was too close.

She latches onto the idea of trapping this crazy not-real hunter. But then her common sense kicks in and she makes a lot of indistinguishable noises before settling on words.]

There is no way I can have enough time to make a trap when he literally -

[Judging by the time between the bullet hitting the tree and the sound of the gun firing -]

- eight yards behind us!

[And there's no way that they're splitting up in the hopes that he'll end up chasing Flynn over her. That's not what a guardian does, and that's not what she's going to do either.]

Can you make a trap? If I stick back and distract him it could buy you enough time to make something work, right?

[Please say right.]
becausemagic: (Default)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-01-16 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe! Maybe. We need to keep him going in circles long enough to get a trap together.

[His eyes flicker over the terrain and the foliage ahead of them. He points off to the side of the trail, among the bigger trees, through some brush they can escape into unseen.]

Stream over there, you can see the sunlight on the water. If we come back to there then when he gets back onto our trail he'll think we're trying to cover our tracks in the water, not laying an ambush.

[Flynn glances at her again, not keen to separate.]

He hasn't been in the real world long. Let me try something. Call me!

[He jams his phone into a knothole in the tree trunk, in the hope that they can use hers to broadcast their voices and confuse the fictional about their position.]

sorry about the wait >>;

[personal profile] mamabaird 2016-02-13 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
That is a very big maybe!

[Eve was a planner, she didn't like winging it on the best of days and this isn't the best of days to begin with. But their choices were limited and if Flynn thought this would work...Eve trusted him.

Didn't mean she couldn't voice her thoughts though. Still she pulls out her phone and quickly wonders if they'll even get cell service under all these trees before her most recent text (to Flynn, happily enough) appears on her screen.

Her thumb presses the 'call' symbol and she hopes.]

You should hide -- We should hide.
becausemagic: (something clever imminent)

No worries; backtag forever (:

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-02-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Flynn answers the call before it can ring out loud, and immediately scrambles into the bushes, beckoning her along. He hopes the cover from the brush to the tree is enough to mask their escape. He hopes the ruse with the phone will work as soon as their pursuer is close enough to their old hiding spot to be lured in. He hopes they'll both make it through this one intact.

The only thing that's certain is that he won't be getting that phone back.

He raises a finger to his lips, as if Eve of all people needs his instruction out here, and points towards the gully up ahead.]

huzzah

[personal profile] mamabaird 2016-02-14 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Eve being proficient in tactical hand signals comes in handy more often than you'd think with the librarians.

She points up to the lip of the gully and then Flynn, trying to tell him to take the high ground so he would be a little more safe.]
becausemagic: (what no)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-02-16 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[When silence is needed, Flynn's expressive hand gestures come into their own. He gives her a frown, and points quickly between the two of them. There's a mad fictional with a rifle on the loose and he'll be damned if he's going to let her get shot. Obviously they should stick together. If they split up there are twice as many trails for him to stumble across. That's how it works, right?

He mimes talking on the phone - that'll need both of them to be convincing too - and making traps, then holds up both hands in concession. High ground is great. Circling back behind their pursuer even better. He'll happily follow her lead but he won't have her get any ideas about acting as bait. There's only one Guardian. Only one Eve. Irreplaceable.

By the time he pauses and raises his eyebrows at her, it's been a full on pantomime. Perfect silence, but anyone watching from a distance would have figured on a whole conversation from the faces he's been pulling.]

[personal profile] mamabaird 2016-02-17 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
[For all their arguing and back-and-forth, they understand each other very well when it matters.

Like now for instance!

Unfortunately for Eve, she knows she isn't going to be able to convince Flynn to do what she wants. Not with the time frame they have. Before she heads into the bushes with Flynn she brushes her shoulder against a mossy tree, taking some of the green off with it and turns over a rock a few steps past that. It would make it look like they were headed into the gully itself instead of up top, but it wouldn't fool him for very long.

It would make it so he'd only have one direction to double back into though. That's when they could spring their trap, but the hunter would have to go past them for that to work.

Ideally in her plan, there'd be some live bait to string him along but if Flynn won't do what she says she just has to work around it.

Eve mimes speaking with her hand - she doesn't know what to say that would sound even marginally convincing right now. But she does know how to make a log trap in a little under five minutes, which she tells him before yanking down some sturdy vines from their place in the tree branches. There's what looks like about a hundred pound log sitting a few feet away.

Making a sling for both ends of the log wouldn't take as long as hauling it above the hunter's line of sight. So she gets started.]
becausemagic: (worrying phone call)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-02-18 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Flynn relaxes a little, relieved, and takes the phone from her while she's busy tying knots. He carries it, mouthpiece clamped in his hand, a little distance away, and finds a small twig. He knows how overboard the volume on that speaker can go, so all he does is gently snap the little twig in front of the phone, and hiss quickly -]

Shh. Don't move.

[That done, he tugs off his cravat and wraps it around the phone to prevent any other noise. Anything more just yet would be overkill.

With the phone secured, he pauses to squint at the stones on the ground. The earth around here would probably hold a circle if he scored it deeply enough, and there are some chalky rocks that'll do for drawing symbols on the larger slabs and boulders nearby. Plus anything else is always useful ammo if thrown hard enough. He gathers a few up.

And all this with his back to her.]
mamabaird: (pic#10006840)

[personal profile] mamabaird 2016-02-27 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's crude but she manages to make the vines cooperate and act as rope. She really wishes she had some supplies or something because who knows when these things will snap on you, but it's what she has to work with so it'll have to do.

Once she gets the two loops around each end of the log she needs to haul it up into the tree, usually that would take more than one person but she seriously doubts Flynn would be able to handle it - plus he looked busy doing...whatever magicy things he was doing.

She'd have to read up on that stuff at some point. Just to make sure he wasn't doing anything that would risk his life. The last thing she needed to happen was for her Librarian to barbecue himself because he tried summoning something made of fire.

Eve ties the two loops of the vines together at a point relatively high above the log and tosses it into the cross of a tree. She pulls it around her back and leans back like she's going to lay down to use her weight as a counter balance so pulling it up into the dripping foliage wouldn't be too impossible for her.]

Can you see him?
becausemagic: (oops)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-02-28 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Flynn's busy rearranging stones around them, dashing about all over the place, though no discernible pattern is being revealed in his work. It looks entirely random. He pauses as she speaks, and looks back the way they came, edging nearer the stream to get a better view further down. He shakes his head and comes back up, holding up one finger, and extracts the phone.

When he puts it to his ear he only has to wait a moment before he can hear small, deliberate noises, a huff of breath, scratching on wood. He's on the point of putting the phone away when there's a very quiet -]
What witchcraft...? [- and then a loud scrabble. Then nothing.

He looks down at the phone screen. The call's been ended.]

Well, it was a nice idea while it lasted.

[He keeps his voice down, but looks up at Eve, and holds up the phone.]

He found it.

[He picks his way over to help her with the log at last.]

At least we can call him for a chat if we want, now.

While watching a Victorian hunter struggle with the concept of a touch screen sounds fun - [She emphasizes the word with a slightly mightier tug on the vine, finally concealing the log in the trees.] - I think we should hide.

[She takes a moment to point down the animal-created path they were walking on and wouldn't you know it. Crazy hunter sounds! Eve still was carrying the weight of the log as it was suspended so hiding for her meant moving in a wide arc around the tree.]

Tell me when he's in position.

[Her arms are starting to shake so she hopes it's soon.]
becausemagic: (it's all gone wrong)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-03-03 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[Flynn leans out to try and pinpoint the hunter's approach. The noises are quiet and infrequent, and... not quite heading in the right direction. Not only is he not going to be where they need for the log trap, he's - Flynn catches a glimpse of movement, crouching, examining disturbed soil along the way - he's veering aside even from the giant circle and symbols Flynn so carefully laid out with rocks.

Dammit. That's no good. At this rate he'll toy with them for a while then chase them over a cliff. Can't have that. The narrative power won't protect them.]

When I shout.

[He breathes it in Eve's ear and doesn't give her a chance to answer. Instead he ducks behind the boulders and works his way along, edging towards the stream. He pulls the phone from his pocket as he goes.

Halfway there he knocks a small rock. It clatters its way down the boulder.

The hunter stands up straight and raises rifle to shoulder.

Flynn presses the call button and bolts uphill.

Eve's phone blares into life as the hunter pulls the trigger, making him jump, ruining his shot.

Cursing, he starts reloading the gun and moves forward. Into the circle. His movements become slower, like he's suddenly heavier and wearier. But he doesn't stop. Flynn turns, judges the distance. Three steps.

The hunter snaps the gun shut.

Two steps.

He takes Flynn's phone from his pocket and hurls it into the stream. The ringtone cuts out.

One step.

He raises the gun. He takes the step.]

Now!

[He pulls the trigger.]

What?! Flynn n -

Flynn!

[Eve can hear herself shriek his name but the rest of her is moving on instincts long since drilled into her and she's released the log the instant she heard Flynn raise his voice to shout.

The gunshot rang in her ears as she heard the harsh thud of the log smacking into the torso of the Cossack - a blow that, if this guy were human, would have shattered his ribs and chest bone. Probably punctured his lungs or heart too.

At most it might stun him long enough for Eve to "win" the game. She didn't know the story very well, but she remembered from high school that the story ended with the hunter becoming the hunted.

She seriously hoped this was going to work. With her wants and needs butting for dominance - on the one hand she wanted to see if Flynn was... okay.

On the other she needed to neutralize the threat.

Maybe she was just more comfortable falling back into a military mindset than as a Guardian without a...

God, Flynn you'd better be okay.

Without caring about whether or not he actually felt it, Eve pressed her boot on the chest of the Fictional and drew her sidearm on him.]

It's over. You lost. I won.

[This seemed to be the magic word, at least in the sense the Cossack knew what she was going to do. The Cossack began to snarl something before Eve shot him in the temple; she didn't want to hear it.

Instead of bleeding out, the hunter burst into ink and disappeared. Job done.]

Flynn...

[Eve holstered her weapon and flicked the safety back on before running to where she saw Flynn go down.]

Flynn, hey. Are you hit?
becausemagic: (is this working?)

[personal profile] becausemagic 2016-04-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Flynn is alive. He knows this, because being dead wouldn't hurt so much. He also knows that if Eve is coming to check on him, the threat is dealt with. Likely with extreme prejudice.

He can feel that knowledge sharpening the pain - fear and focus will do wonders for blocking little irritants like blood and bullets from the mind, but when they're not needed anymore... well. He finds a new focus to distract himself. Reassuring Eve.]

Had worse!

[He intends to shout more but makes the mistake of trying to sit up, and for a moment his vision disappears. He takes as deep a breath as he can and rides it out. One part of his mind is busy lining up sentences that will keep Eve from worrying too much, as soon as he can find the breath to say them, while another is assessing the damage - broken collarbone? shoulder? It's hard to pin down the spot that hurts worst.

Another part of his mind, somewhere near the back, which he's making a valiant attempt to ignore, is already working on two lists of puns, depending on where the damage is. He's hoping for shoulder. Much more opportunity for wordplay there.

He manages to wheeze another couple of sentences as the world swims back into view.]

It looks worse than it is. Probably. How bad does it look?
mamabaird: (pic#10083765)

[personal profile] mamabaird 2016-04-09 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop moving.

[She tries not to snap at him as she kneels next to him and supports his back with a hand pressed against his spine as she assess the damage.

From what she can see, the bullet went through his shoulder and went clean through the back. If she cared to look, she'd find the bullet hole in a tree that Flynn was standing in front of, but no bullet. It vanished with the gun and the hunter who held it.]

Clean through and through. You'll be okay. Impact might have cracked something, though. Can you move your arm?

[She's not too practiced at being a field medic, but she has enough experience behind her to help in the next few moments.

They don't have a door and Eve doesn't remember that Flynn doesn't need a door to pop in and out of the Library because reasons so her mind is focused on getting back to civilization as soon as possible.]
