Nothing like a little sexy sparring.

SEXY SPARRING meme

Once you get down to it, fighting is pretty intimate. For a split second, guards let down so you can push yourself to your limit. Energy expended to gain that win. Bodies on bodies, pinning, grappling, pressing against someone. Panting. Sweating. If some UST is already there, if you two are already frayed due to a lingering attraction, a little physicality may be the breaking point. So whether you're really fighting, both of you are training, or one of you is teaching the other some moves to defend themselves (even if somebody's holding back and handling the situation with kid gloves), holds may go on a little longer than they should, words may come out in the heat of the moment -

And, of course, you may find that a kiss is the perfect way to knock an opponent off their feet....or that you want to lay a smooch on them, anyway, when they topple over onto you. You may not win, but really, you do!

So one thing Maya's decided since finding herself in Beacon Hills is that she needs to be a little better at defending herself. She thought Degrassi was tough with gangs and complicated friendships with washed up TV stars. None of them were werewolves or anything else.

So here she was, getting ready to get physical with the one girl in school just about everyone wanted to get physical with. And not just the boys, although they were less subtle about staring. Lydia was at Maya's level of needing the extra work, and wasn't likely to accidentally hurt Maya while they practiced.

Maya was wearing an outfit that really seemed more at home in a jazzersize video. Her clothes were bright and loud in yellows and blacks. A bumblebee really. "So do things ever calm down? Even a little?"

Practicing with Jordan was slowly becoming more daunting and frustrating than helpful. Lydia wanted to be better, but being reminded over and over of just how novice she was for the time being was starting to infuriate her and the last thing that she was willing to do was give up, but if she kept going, that was exactly what she feared she would do. So when Maya mentioned wanting to learn, Lydia jumped on it. If nothing else, it would help her remember that just because she needed more practice didn't mean she was a lost cause. Helping someone reach her level — teaching — felt like a good way to focus on the skills she'd learned so far. If she could teach them, then she could remember to do them.

Pulling her hair back into a messy ponytail and shrugging off her hoodie to reveal her typical sparring garb, she looked over her shoulder at Maya before turning to face her.

"Do you want the honest answer or the one that'll make you feel better?" she asked, but the look on her face probably told the other girl everything she needed to know, anyway. "Ready?"

Maya may have stared, for a moment, but then tried to put her mind off of that. Girls were not her thing, but, there was a reason Lydia was Lydia. And for a little while Maya's eyes just kept ending up somewhere else that would make a less confident girl bitter and jealous. And that was before Lydia turned around.

"Well, if you tell me the truth I'll take this seriously and give it my all," Maya said as she finished putting on her glove. Safety being a thing, moreso for a musician. "If you wanna make me feel better, I'll just bide time as I wait for you to fall out of that sport's bra. Doesn't seem sturdy enough."

Most girls didn't make passes at Lydia, even casually. She'd always sort of assumed that it was because she'd only ever publicly dated guys and that gave off a vibe that said don't bother, even if it wasn't like she was completely opposed, either. In any case, Maya's comment caught Lydia a little off guard and, with her surprise, escaped a huff of amusement.

"Well, it hasn't let me down so far," she replied with a grin. The grin lasted only a second before fading away. "But to answer your question, no. It never really calms down. We'll get a few weeks here, a couple of months there, but...it's always a living nightmare, really, we just get little breaks," she confessed. "I suppose if we didn't, we wouldn't have survived this long," she added under her breath, more to herself than to Maya.

Lydia took a deep breath and got into her fight stance. "Right, so, you want to always have your arms up. This way, you can block hits but you never lose sight of your opposition. Like this," she instructed, holding her stance to give Maya a model.

Maya walked a very narrow tightrope between playful and flirting. She wasn't much of one for filtering thoughts once she started talking, and that really was the first place her mind went with that outfit. She just took putting Lydia off guard as a personal victory, because it wasn't something people usually managed without her having hashtag banshee problems.

"So it just lets everyone else down." Maya smirked a little, again her mind feeding directly to her responses without stopping to think. Of course that little thought of games was banished with the harsh reality that things were serious, and training could not be a joke. Maya played through sorrow at the idea things never really calmed down, to a stern determined look, one of someone who could take on anything.

Maya mimicked a stance she'd seen her sister do from martial arts. The arms up thing was a fairly common thing from what little Maya learned from Katie's exhibitions. That she could easily get her mind around. Not that she understood how Katie could flip a guy twice her size, or kick at about face level. "Right, don't want to get punched in the face, what else?"

Well, Lydia had to give it to her; she had moxie. That was for sure. Lydia liked her already. Smirking back, she arched an eyebrow. "Apparently so," she agreed. It was sometimes uncomfortably easy for Lydia to shift from playful to serious these days, because really, what else could she do? If she was stuck in one mode or the other for too long, then she was either going to put herself or others in danger or drag everyone around her down with her. Neither seemed like a good option to her.

Nodding, Lydia reached over and adjusted Maya's arms just slightly from the stance she'd taken. It was pretty close on her own, she just needed a little help with spacing. "Exactly, but you also don't want to distract yourself while you're blocking. So, I'm going to try to throw a punch — holding back, obviously, until we get a rhythm going — and I want you to block it. Okay?"

Lydia moved back into her own fight stance and waited for confirmation before continuing.

Moxie was a thing Maya had in spades, it came from a reckless disregard for herself due to some past trauma, and basically feeling that all the world's troubles are due to her not trying hard enough. But she means well, really. Maya let the smirk linger a few moments after the talk of Lydia's wardrobe and its lack of malfunctions past.

"Right, so just putting that not getting punched into practice. Ready." Maya wished, somewhat, that she didn't have her cello lessons at the same time Katie was learning how to punch things. She still loved music, but her life was so much more in need of punching things than of music. All that did was keep her sane. Well, less of a nervous wreck, in any case.

The next move was Lydia's, and Maya hoped she was ready for it.
