fell asleep on

SWEET DREAMS.
Someone, whether it be a friend or a total stranger, has fallen asleep on you wherever you happen to be; you are a rather comfortable pillow to them. What do you do? |
asahi azumane ☆ haikyuu!!
ignore this if this is too many threads!
takeda is driving - he's usually driving given that the van belongs to the school and takeda is responsible for it - but ukai's been shuffled to the back for the sake of kiyoko avoiding being stuck between nishinoya and tanaka for an hour and a half. rather than sitting between the two of them, though, ukai's instead ended up against a window with asahi beside him.
which is fine in itself. sure, things have happened between them - and will probably continue to happen between them - but it's been a while since asahi's visit to his apartment after practice. they've spent enough time texting, but things have generally been too busy for them to plan anything. and, from what ukai can tell, no one has really picked up on any difference between them.
it's also fine that asahi has nodded off beside him and has ended up leaning into him, his head resting against ukai's shoulder with the small slouch he's taken. what's not fine is the fact that daichi is sitting behind them and ukai can feel two holes being stared into the back of his head.
the understanding of that fear is really starting to sink in. ]
i dont think u understand how enamored i am by them......
Then, of course, there's this thing with Ukai. Where Asahi finds his heart leaping at every text, and how Asahi sometimes thinks he'll burn up from a single glance across the gym, but they keep it quiet because Ukai is still Karasuno's coach, and Karasuno means too much to the both of them. Everyone is working so hard to take the team to nationals before-- well, before it's too late, and the third years don't have a choice but to admit they lost their chance.
It would be so much easier to pass the torch if they could have the other hand on the national championship trophy.
So if he's been shaving off an hour of sleep here and another couple hours there, it's because Asahi recognizes his responsibility to everyone else, and values the sacrifices he knows they're also making. There just aren't enough hours in the day, for any of them.
Which is why he appreciates Ukai sitting next to him. After a long, grueling practice, they're all slowly losing the fight against sleep-- a fight Asahi doesn't exactly want to win against. Sitting next to Ukai spares Asahi the obligation of making conversation or being entertaining. Two seats ahead of them, Tanaka's and Noya's sleepy accusations of the other nodding off are growing more quiet and infrequent, suggesting the rest of the ride might be calm enough for everyone else to get some sleep. The prospect is tantalizing, and he's trying to get a head start--
If only Ukai's shoulders would stop stiffening up every few minutes. ]
Hey- Ukai-san. [ The formality feels strange on his tongue, but they're surrounded by the team and they really don't need to draw any more attention than necessary. ] Relax.
oh, good. i'm not alone. :')
that's part of why this thing has settled into texts. because no matter how much he'd like to carve out a place into the time asahi might have available, he's not going to do anything that might worsen his stress or distract him from everything he's expected to focus on.
so, needless to say, he's surprised by how easily asahi relaxes into him because they are completely surrounded by the team, even if most of them are nodding off or already asleep, as is the case with hinata and kageyama.
and he's more surprised by the sound of his name so close beside him and how strange it is that the formality feels so at odds with the tired, relaxed tone of asahi's voice. ]
Easier said than done. [ his words are muttered as he rolls his shoulders, the one under asahi's head relaxing as ukai lets out a breath.
having the rest of the van relatively quiet makes a difference, though, and ukai finds it hard to feel too much dread - as ridiculous as that is - or to be too tense when he soon finds himself tilting his head over to rest against the top of asahi's as the sleepy atmosphere starts to get to him, too. ]

Plus, if he's being completely honest, he misses Ukai. Not that he has any real time to miss him with, but that hardly stops him from doing so. It's not exactly like they don't see each other, because obviously there's practice almost every day, and neither of them exactly has a lot of down time to spare, but it's still there. In every study hard text and good practice slap on the back.
The selfish, impossible desire for just a little more time.
It's what makes the lull of the van so enticing, the near endless sound of the tires beating away at the concrete a welcome reprieve from the almost crushing feeling of constantly running from one thing to the next. Here, it feels like they can steal a few minutes with each other, even if it is while surrounded by the team. ]
I can move. [ The offer is quiet, and mostly ornamental. Asahi is far too pleased with their closeness, the press of his knee against Ukai's, the way Ukai rests his cheek against the top of Asahi's head-- seeking the comfort of his support. ]

there's something about the way asahi's so willing to relax that makes it hard to think much beyond the fact that the position is comfortable and that it's nice to finally have some contact again that isn't just from coach to player. not that this is particularly intimate - if it were, ukai's sure there would be less shoulders being leaned against in the van - but it's a welcome difference when there's no saying when they might get more time together.
or if they will, for that matter. ukai's too focused on the team and their push for nationals to give it more than a passing thought here or there, but there's always the chance that things will wrap up with the team and asahi will throw everything into his studies until graduation. and then... well, he hasn't really asked what asahi plans to do after that.
it's not something he intends to question so long as they've all got a more immediate goal in front of them. ]
Nah, it's fine. [ the brush off of the offer is equally quiet and almost fond as ukai lifts his opposite hand to quiet a yawn, not wanting to disturb their position. ] Go to sleep.

A part of him is unspeakably glad Ukai hasn't asked him what his plans are. It'd be really embarrassing to burst into anxious tears in front of him.
Takeda takes the wind of the road at a perfectly reasonable speed, and it pushes Asahi just slightly further into Ukai's space. Asahi's knee bumps against Ukai's, and he's not sure if it's the sluggish pull of sleep or some misplaced streak of courage that makes him slow to fix the way it presses their thighs together.
He knows better than to leave them touching too much, even if he really likes the idea of it. ]
Are you going to? [ Not that it matters, because Asahi's voice has that all too familiar slur of sleep to it. He could try to fight the pull of exhaustion dragging at him, but he's not going to win. It's a simple case of sleep depravation, and even though sleeping on Ukai's floor might have been more comfortable than scrunching up in the back of the school's van, the honest fact of the matter is he's too content with Ukai next to him. ]
begins to throw tags at you (also, they should totally wake up alone in the van back at the school)
the shift of the van doesn't do much to move ukai from the positions he's in, but he feels the press of the thigh against his own and almost tilts his head to look down at their legs. he decides, after little thought, that he's too lazy for it, though he does enjoy the way their legs meet despite it not lasting very long.
their knees do remain bumped together and ukai doesn't do anything to remedy that. once they fall asleep, nothing will look all that strange anyway. ]
Soon as you quit talking. [ it's said in a teasing mumble as he lets his eyes close. he should be a little more wary, probably remain awake while asahi sleeps against him, but the trip is still long enough that he knows the sleepy atmosphere will claim him before they make it back. so why not make himself comfortable and avoid the risk of nodding off and cracking his head against asahi's in the process. ]
which one of them will daichi bury first i wonder.....
In his dream, they're eating ramen together, side by side at the cramped counter of his favorite ramen house. Ukai is talking about something, and while dream logic keeps Asahi from figuring out exactly what it is he's talking about, it doesn't matter because Asahi is entertained by Ukai's enthusiasm. Every so often Asahi's knee will bump Ukai's under the counter, or Ukai will point at him with his chopsticks still held between his fingers, and Asahi will laugh at the way Ukai frowns at him over some comment or another. He doesn't question why his bowl never runs out, or how Ukai can look at him with that teasing curve to his mouth in such a crowded place, because dreams always make sense when you're in them.
Which is perhaps why he's able to sleep through everyone piling off the van and Takeda worriedly debating the merits of allowing the exhausted majority of the volleyball team to trek all the way across campus to the club room on their own, or dealing with Ukai and Asahi slumped against each other in the faculty parking lot.
Blinking awake, Asahi gathers reality back to him piece by piece. The van is stopped. It's quiet. They must be back at Karasuno. He's... definitely been sleeping with his mouth open. Embarrassed, Asahi closes his mouth and goes to rub a palm against his face-- only to find he can't, because his fingers are twined with Ukai's, their hands resting innocently in the dip where Asahi's thigh presses against Ukai's. ]
Ah- Ukai? [ Tentative, because Asahi knows he should wake Ukai up, knows they'll have to deal with this little display of intimacy that the whole van may or may not have seen-- but the sleepy, reckless part of him that fell asleep on Ukai in the first place hopes his quiet voice will go unnoticed, so he'll have a little more time to enjoy holding Ukai's hand. ]
he'll tell suga and they'll each take one of them. end it in one go.
when he does fall asleep, there aren't any dreams for ukai. and though it's dreamless, it's remarkable restful for sleeping in the van while things should be less comfortable. perhaps it's due to not getting enough sleep at night, but it's more likely that it's got everything to do with the person he's resting against and the level of comfort he's somehow gained with him.
that helps to explain how he sleeps through the sound of the van coming to a stop, the rest of the team climbing out of it, and takeda's flustered worrying before he eventually closes the two of them in the van. even after that, ukai doesn't stir until he hears the sound of his name from much closer, though even that doesn't get him to open his eyes. the position is still comfortable enough and the side leaning into asahi is warm.
so all he gets in response to his name is a low hum and a sleepy-- ] Asahi?
[ their location - the van, not the school just yet - is slow to catch up with him, as is the use of asahi's given name rather than his family one. it's a combination of those two things sinking in that finally makes him open his eyes. the lift of his head is as far as he moves to look around, realizing they're in the parking lot. ]
Shit. [ it's not really an urgent, worried curse. more an offhanded one, almost as if it's meant to replace an oops. once he returns his attention to asahi, the hand in his own registers more seriously and his eyes drop to take in the way they're holding hands, which he may have remedied if anyone were still around to see it as they woke up. as it is, they're alone and ukai just gives asahi's hand a squeeze as he lets his head rest back against the seat. ]
Think we were like this when they left the van?
surfaces from the depths
Unfortunately, Asahi just woke up too, and in the end, he's a softhearted seventeen year old. Subtlety isn't exactly his finest selling point.
There's a sleep mark on Ukai's cheek, from where he was propped against Asahi's head for the better half of an hour, and if Asahi's hand weren't otherwise occupied, he'd be at risk of reaching up to touch it. Instead, he just squeezes Ukai's hand back, and hopes he doesn't look as fond as he feels. ( If he does, they can blame it on that weird, pulled open feeling you sometimes get when waking up, right? ) ]
That depends. [ Slipping his other hand into the pocket of his pants, Asahi pulls out his phone and checks it. Sure enough, there's a text from Daichi, and three from Suga. Asahi quickly dims his screen, dropping the hand holding his phone back to his thigh before he can get worked up about the content of those messages. ] Okay, its uh, a little more than likely that we were...
[ Sneaking a peek at their hands from the corner of his eye, Asahi wonders who reached for who first. Ukai's wrist is draped over Asahi's, like maybe he reached for Asahi first, but his thumb rests snug in the crook of Asahi's thumb and forefinger, suggesting Asahi was the one to lace their fingers. Holding hands isn't exactly a feat of dexterity, but its a little thrilling to think they can navigate each other while asleep.
Blame it on the sleep still muddling his brain, or their continued proximity, or even the impending conversation he's going to have to have with his two best friends, but Asahi can't help quietly pointing out, ] I think that's the first time you've called me by my name, in public.
reaches for you
as it is, ukai knows he's limited to the hand holding while it remains out of sight. he doubts anyone is hovering to watch the van, but there's always the chance of someone passing by. the school grounds never seem to be completely empty.
he watches as asahi takes his phone out and the way he's quick about lowering it again is telling enough. ukai can't help letting out a quiet laugh at the fact that they'll be expected to explain this even though it's clear it happened while sleeping. he's likely got a number of nervous messages from takeda waiting on his own phone as well, but he's unwilling to check just yet because it means he'll need to address things sooner rather than later.
and ukai is fine with putting that off for a little longer if it means not pulling his hand away from asahi's just yet. it's ridiculous and he recognizes that, but that doesn't stop him from brushing his thumb over asahi's knuckle as he hears the statement. ]
I'd use it more often, but it'd raise more questions than this. [ the admission feels easy in the space they're in and he hopes asahi is as okay with the use of his name as it seems like he is. the continuing feeling of the hand against his own is enough to make him think that's probably the case, though. ] If anybody wants to place blame, I'm gonna take it. I don't think this'll be that big of a deal since everybody saw us sleeping, but just in case.
leaps into arms
Pretending that thumb brushing over his knuckle doesn't send the butterflies in Asahi's stomach fluttering nervously, Asahi shifts his fingers between Ukai's, pressing their palms more closely together. In the quiet, closeness of the van, halfway between who they should be and who they are, Asahi feels just a little braver than he would if they were anywhere else. ] Sometimes, I think about using yours.
[ As brave as he might feel, his heart still leaps at having possibly said too much. He's quick to clarify, ] Not here- or even, really, anywhere else where we'd be around people. I mean- I know that would be a problem. [ That's an understatement... but for all of Asahi's rushed words, he doesn't pull his hand away from Ukai's. ] Just, ah, sometimes, when I'm thinking about you, I wonder if you'd like that at all.
[ This is the least embarrassing version of this conversation, Asahi supposes. Where Ukai doesn't know that Asahi gets through one more problem set, or one more chapter, by thinking about the next time their free days might align. When he can maybe pluck up the courage to try calling him Keishin.
Asahi shakes his head, not wanting Ukai to put himself at risk when the team needs him. ] Everyone's already probably figuring I did it. The only person who sleeps more affectionately than I do is Tanaka... We're pretty much the designated end caps during training camp.

all of it leaves him with a warmth in his chest that he knows he'll regret come spring and graduation. that's not a worry for their time alone, though, and ukai instead finds himself smiling as he looks at asahi again. ] If we were anywhere else, I would've kissed you to get you quiet. [ it's not a complaint about asahi going on, but how he would choose to stop him from worrying about what he's saying. ]
I'd like it. You should use it. [ despite the way he urges it on in a casual way, there's something exciting about it even to ukai. and he knows he's getting in too deep when that's the case, but it's too late to stop anything now.
he does raise his eyebrows a little at the mention of sleeping affectionately. ] Sensei's gonna want to talk to me, I'm sure, so I'll just tell him the truth. We were asleep and it wasn't intentional. I don't think anybody else'll bring it up to me, so what you say will be up to you in the end anyway.
[ there's a pause before ukai backtracks a little, the look on his face softening from thoughtful to a look caught between amusement and fondness. ] So, how often do you think about me anyway?
no subject
[ Don't give him that look Ukai. Asahi literally can't help his serial snuggling.
He's nodding, figuring he can avoid his friends' interrogation (for today at least) if he forgoes grabbing his stuff from the clubroom, and idly wondering if Takeda-sensei will want to speak to him (how awkward...), when Ukai asks that.
Nervously wiping his phone's screen against his thigh, Asahi pretends like he can't feel the blush traveling from his ears to settle high on his cheeks. ]
Ah- the usual amount?
[ Evasion: nailed it. ]
no subject
or a not so brief one.
ukai watches that blush spread before he even hears the response and he wishes he could be reckless. tugging asahi closer to kiss him is even more tempting when he hears the answer to his question.
it earns a laugh, though, and ukai settles for leaning into asahi a little more, letting their knees nudge together. ] You should be glad I don't text you as often as I think about you. You'd never get anything done.
no subject
Pleased with Ukai's answer and the way he makes the effort to press their knees together, Asahi bumps Ukai's shoulder in what could be called gentle retaliation. It could also be called, much more obviously, affection-- but they're already holding hands in the back of a van while talking about how often they think of each other; the butterflies in Asahi's chest don't need any more ammunition. ] Are you questioning my ability to multitask?
[ Which, to be fair, is a question that probably should be raised when it comes to this thing between them.
How many times has he tapped his phone in the middle of a particularly grueling practice problem, just looking for a missed text? How many times has he laid awake in bed, dangerously close to dropping his phone on his face as he scrolled through their messages, knowing full and well he's playing a losing game of chicken with sleep but wanting to re-read their conversation one last time? ]
no subject
Nope. I'm questioning your ability to avoid letting me monopolize all your time if I'm given the chance. [ which is why he avoids sending more texts than he already does. both of them have things to do outside of talking to one another, though asahi's studying is arguably more important than ukai's own sitting behind the counter of the store.
as he speaks, he momentarily lifts their joined hands, not getting them very far before he drops them down against their thighs again, a sighed chuckle following the action. it would be so easy to drag asahi's hand to his lips and brush kisses over his knuckles, but it's something he knows he can't do. ]
We've eventually gotta move from here.
no subject
[ He wonders if it's obvious, how much he enjoys being around Ukai. How things seem to slow down, and somehow become more manageable when he's around. How every text seems like a reminder that there's someone unequivocally in his corner. Even if texts and stolen moments in Ukai's apartment and the back of a van are all they get, they're all worth it to Asahi. He cherishes this feeling Ukai's fostered in him, more than he could possibly hope to say.
Asahi squeezes the hand holding his own, as much to ready himself to let go as to remember the shape of Ukai's hand in his. He slides his phone back into his pocket as he slides his hand from Ukai's. ] I'll go check that we're not locked in.
[ They're just not that lucky. ]

i came i saw i terrorized (sorry?)
then of course, there's ukai and asahi sitting right in front of him, and even if it's only through the cracks in the van seats and the reflection in the window, daichi is pretty sure they are like, curled up. together. daichi is not stupid, or blind, he's noticed asahi acting a little off here and there in practice especially around ukai. it's making him curious, and a little, tiny bit worried. asahi is basically an adult now, sure, but he's also a fragile little idiot and his friend, so naturally, daichi is concerned. well. if this is what it looks like. ukai isn't a bad person, daichi likes him, but still, so many questions.
for now though, he just sits and waits. and watches.
he can nap another time. ]
yes yes yes yes
One minute they're chatting....and the next, Suga drifts to sleep, his head falling with a gentle bump to Asahi's broad shoulder.
hello precious sugachan c:
Fun, but tiring.
Asahi is glad Suga offered to ride back with him when he excused himself from the outing a little earlier than was normal. He was worried that Suga might have felt some kind of obligation, but with the way his forehead rests on Asahi's shoulder, its becoming very clear that they're both heading home for their own reasons.
It's a shame, Asahi would be a very comfortable place to rest against, with his soft jumper and wide, warm bicep, if he wasn't so tense...
this my guilty pleasure pairing T_T
Sugawara makes a quiet little hum, still apparently trying to fight his fatigue, but it's obviously a losing battle. Eventually, his jaw falls open and his features soften in slack, and he slips a little lower, hair brushing against Asahi's chin.
they are too cute for guilt!!
Asahi really doesn't mind Suga leaning on him either. He's a comforting, solid presence against Asahi's side-- and when he's not threatening to punch Asahi into the proper mood, Asahi quite likes being close with Suga.
Still, he's a little worried that Suga will be annoyed that Asahi didn't try to wake him up. That he might be angry and embarrassed that he fell asleep on Asahi and Asahi just let him.
So, after agonizing over it, Asahi plucks up the courage to quietly ask, "Suga?"
♥♥♥♥♥
Truth be told, Asahi was right. It wasn't just the hustle and bustle of the city or trying to reign in the first years that had him yawning partly through the day - it was also the intense amount of studying he'd been doing. He was smart, sure, but he wasn't on the level he should be. Volleyball had taken precedence, and he knew he had to make up for that somehow. If that meant studying until two in the morning and getting up at eight for practice, then that's just what he did. So far, it hadn't gotten him down.
Speaking of down, there he goes, slipping and slipping and slip---ping, until he's using Asahi's lap as a pillow.
