inappropriate road trip music, nothing shippy please]6! Have a tiny hyperactive bundle of fur
This time, however, he poked the ninja repeatedly to get his attention.
"Sir, there's a rod comin' up that takes us straight to the Glass Forest! We can't go through this country without goin' there!" He put on his widest puppy eyes when he spoke, hoping it would be enough to convince the driver.
I actually cackled outloud - awesome
It was the same noise he'd made each time, a low kind of attentive noise that didn't actually require more than an eye flick in the proper direction. It was no bother to him to acknowledge each new discovery. The first dozen times or so he had been a little more appreciative but they had a very long way to still go today if they were going to make the hotel they had rooms at and - perhaps it made him a bit of a philistine but... he was really starting to think all cows looked alike. Also most rock formations. And he had what he considered fairly reasonable suspicions when it came to the trucks parked on the sides of the road selling meat out of the back of their portable barbeques.
The poking though - his eyebrows went up a little and he glanced over. Another pit stop? It was his fault really for letting the little guy get that Huge Gulp Mountain Dew back at the last gas station...
"I'm sorry?" the closest he would come to admitting he hadn't actually been listening beyond a base level.
oh.
Oh, were those sad giant eyes glimmering at him?
crap.
"You want what?"
no subject
"I just wanna tell you that we're comin' up to the Glass Forest, remember? It's where people made all these neat statues and trees out of blown glass and put 'em all together! You remember that, right?"
He did read a bit from the travel guide last night to get over his pre-travel excitement. Surely he would remember that, right?
no subject
That - probably didn't bode well...
"Hm?"
He had paid attention to the possible stopping places along their route and he vaguely remembered something about a glass forest - but what he didn't remember was agreeing to stop there. Which was what the conversation sounded as if it was angling in the direction of. And he hadn't planned in a rest stop at a forest made of glass when he was figuring out their drive time and distance last night. His eyes flicked from his companion - so hopeful - to the road and then up to yet another giant, rather worn billboard advertising the forest and Fresh Squeezed Juice and Hand-Made Ice Cream! and Boiled Peanuts.
Why would you boil peanuts?
There was a little bit of wariness in his voice as he answered and he didn't slow down or start changing lanes.
"I remember, Wander."
no subject
"I'm so glad you did! I was real excited 'bout finally gettin' to see it, and I remembered to bring my camera!" He pulled out a polaroid camera that he stored in a bag in front of his seat, waving it right next to Minato's face.
Surely the ninja will looks forward to this? He looked so worried during most of the trip today, not even interested in taking notice of the sights around them. Wander guessed that he must have been too busy driving to enjoy the trip, but that's why he wanted to go to a place they can actually stop and rest at.
...Is that a sign for boiled peanuts? Now they really have to stop.
"Look at that sign," Wander says in awe as he stands on his seat and leans against the dashboard. "We can get lunch!"
no subject
And he hadn't even really been sure snookered was a word up until he'd met Wander.
Because, to him, it sounded as if Wander was going on the assumption they had planned to stop - he gave a mild grunt at the flailing camera, where did he keep all that stuff? - that they had planned to stop all along. Which Minato specifically didn't remember agreeing to. Not even close.
They had miles to go before they sleep and more of that kind of thing and -
his eyebrows went up a little at the awe in his companion's voice and he slid another glance over at the furry moppet riding shotgun.
well, damn.
How was he supposed to tell someone like that 'no'?
The thought of what those eyes alone would do if he vetoed the side trip had the lines of his mouth flattening out.
...miles to go...?
With an almost silent exhale, he switched lanes.
"We do need to stop for lunch."
no subject
Visiting the Glass Forest with his new friend would give him what he needed.
He was lost in thought when Minato switched lanes, the movement jerking Wander out of his daydreams.
"Really?" He almost whispered. He knew that tone of voice from years of travel: the "I don't want to admit it so I'll come up with another excuse" attitude so many people have.
"This is great! We can finally get some nice pictures for your folks back home!"
He sits on his seat again, but with a visible bounce. "Oh, so you wanna get lunch first or do the visitin' part first?"
no subject
Even if he wasn't, the sheer joy the little orange being managed to derive from everything was excuse enough all by itself. Minato couldn't help the slightly crooked smile that touched his lips now that he'd committed to the inevitable and he shot a look at his passenger as he eased into the turn lane for the exit.
"I think you should plan our side trip, Wander. Whatever you decide is best, that's what we'll do while we're here."
If Minato was going to be snookered - he might as well commit completely to it. Even if he did have the sneaking suspicion he was only asking for trouble.
no subject
As Minato turned the car towards the signs leading the way, Wander took the time to roll down the window and dangle out, as they moving slowly enough that he wouldn't fall out. The air out here smelled of farmland and dust, but it was a smell unique to this one place that they would only visit briefly, and what was the use of complaining if they came out here to have a good time?
"Left! To the leeeeft!" Wander gripped the car door with his left hand as he pointed with the right with all the energy he could conjure. In retrospect, it might have been too much, but he was that genuinely excited about this stop. No point in holding back, right?
no subject
It was a little like having a five year old sometimes.
Minato didn't mind.
He should probably make sure Wander had water or something without a lot of sugar in it with his meal though -
Minato's eyes took in the 'hand painted' country signs directing them to the 'World's Ninth Wonder' with smaller, honestly hand painted signs that advertised a real antique shop was on premise as well and though that, maybe, he should have something with a lot of sugar in it himself. He'd probably need it.
As they bumped down the wide dirt road they'd been instructed to turn onto, past the white painted fence that seemed to be holding back a lot of corn and he saw the large wooden building rising in front of them, he decided he really would need it.
What he couldn't quite decide was why he was smiling, just a little.
no subject
That question had to wait, as Minato pulled the car over to a wooden building advertising "Lunch and Dinner." Wander calmly opened the car door and slid out, camera in hand, then hopped up the steps to the front door, turned around, and took a photo of Minato following him.
"There! Now we got a picture of your first moments here." Candid photos are more memorable than staged ones anyway.
5??
There's lots of loud sighs and grunts and accidental kicking of the driver seat that she mumbles 'sorry' for as she squirms around and tries to get comfortable.]
Arrgh! Can't I just not wear it?!
[So now complaining as she grabs the strap and holds it as far from her as possible.]
lmao! sound good and aww, bitty Kushina
It's... been a very long day so far.
He'd let her ride in front with him but then the radio and the glove compartment are threatened and he's not sure he's willing to sacrifice them just yet. It's getting there.
He loves her, he really does, but a road trip across the country hauling a trailer is a test of both their patience with the level of energy she has and the lack of ways to burn it off trapped in a car.]
It's to keep you safe. [There's nothing in his voice but calm.] Sit with your back against the seat instead of sitting forward and it won't bother you.
heheh =w=)>
[She asks a little petulently and if he looks in the rearview mirror he should be able to see her eyeing the back of his head dubiously.
UUUGHH He's not helping so there's another small groan.]
Yeeeeeah, but then I won't be able to see ahead. [Suddenly, she perks up, leaning around the side of his seat and stretching her seatbelt to its max. Her grin is wide and hopeful.]
I could sit in the front.
no subject
[She already knows that of course but he answers her anyway simply because he always answers her whenever she asks a question, no matter what it is. The same way he always listens even if sometimes he has to ask her to wait a minute so he can finish something else he was in the middle of. His eyes slide to the side as she strains forward, a slight lift of pale eyebrows but he doesn't comment on it. It's not as if the seat belt is going to get tired of having tension before she does.
He looks at the empty seat next to him before his eyes go back to the road.
He has a hard time refusing her anything, especially when she's looking at him hopefully. Voice still mild, he only says:]
I just got the glove box unstuck from the last time you sat in the front.
no subject
Wincing and blushing a little from him reminding her of how she had shoved too many things into the compartment and then tried to close it makes her glance at said glove box. Sure enough, it looks like it did before Kushina touched it.]
I won't break it! I-It just wouldn't close that time, y'know?
[Minato spare her. She moves back and presses her forehead to the back of the seat and mumbles.]
I'm bet I'll die of boredom before I die of a car accident.
no subject
It's everyone else on the road he questions.
Not - that there's anyone on the road at the moment. At all. It's just a very, very long stretch of highway past what, Minato will admit, are fairly boringly repetitive empty fields. Even the sky is a kind of low, dull grey. He exhales silently. Maybe if they could pass a roadside stand or a fast food place, they could stop for a bit and she could get out and run around... except, again, just empty fields at this point.]
I'd rather you not die of anything but very old age. What happened to the things you brought to keep you entertained?
no subject
Kushina's eyes trail to the coloring books and small game system she brought with her. A book might have kept her preoccupied but even without her aversion to anything she had to read she felt carsick the one time she tried.]
I already beat my game and my hand hurts from coloring.
[Although, now that he mentions it she'll grab the book, flip through some pages, and hold it out to tap his side with the edge while her free hand sneaks down to the button to unlock her restraints.]
But I did this, look. [She's so proud of the forest she colored with a giant monster she drew in.]
Cool, huh? That one I did on my own. I can show you the other stuff I drew too if you let me sit up front. There's an ocean on another page and I drew a giant monster octopus. They're the ones with six legs, right? Or was it eight...?
no subject
Eight.
[She's really getting very creative, and detailed, with her monsters. He thinks that might have been drool dripping from it's fangs if his quick glance had been right. A glance in the rear view at her.
It is pretty boring for him up front by himself as well. Maybe if he'd brought them a book on tape or something...
he caves.
Of course.]
All right. Climb up front. But you have to wear your seat belt here too.
no subject
But she's so pleased right now, looking around her new spot in the front. She's like an adult awyea]
Hey, so, how did you fix this thing anyway? I thought it was broken forever, y'know?
[She reaches for the glove box and tugs it open. Immediately after:]
Oops...
[fallforitfallforitfallforit]
no subject
He's already exhaling silently through slightly parted lips though the second he hears the distinct click of the glove box opening.
just like an adult -
He doesn't shut his eyes next but it's only because he's driving and has to watch for random tumbleweeds or something. He doesn't even look.]
What happened?
no subject
Kushina carefully closes the glove box again.]
Nothing. I was kidding around.
[Huffs and crosses her arms.]
I told you I wouldn't break it. [WHERE'S THE FAITH]
no subject
Years of learning it as a defense.
His faith, btw, is with the five bizarrely bent screws, two mangled beyond salvage maps and the hinge he had to replace.
He still hears the disappointment in her voice and realizes he's messed up on of her jokes.
Also - that the glove box really isn't broken. Yet.
His lips relax and soften a little and he reaches over to rest a hand on her head, giving her hair a soft stroke. Apologizing. Then he picks up the coloring book in his lap and hands it back to her. His voice is gentler.]
Tell me about your monsters, Kushina.
no subject
Her shoulders hunch a little and she scowls a little for the head pat, but it softens just as easily as he does for the tender gesture. And also because she can talk about her awesome monsters.
Her lips quirk in a small smile and she leans over the center console to point out the her monster of the forest.]
This one eats the people that get lost in the forest. He eats them for dinner. But he only eats people that are mean to others or have bad hearts. So even if he's a monster, he's kind of a good monster, y'know? He eats the bullies and criminals.
He still scares everyone though because he's a monster, he just doesn't eat them all. [There's a small pause.]
He eats seatbelts too.
