The A/B/O Meme

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?
Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).
RESOURCES:CONTENT WARNING: Below the cut contains descriptions of animalistic sexual behavior as applied to humans, situations of dubious consent, explicit situations, mpreg, and scenarios of societal oppression. Click with caution!
Fanlore on the Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse
Alphas, Betas and Omegas: A primer.
ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.
2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.
3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.
SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?
2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.
3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?
4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.
5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?
6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.
7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.
8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

((Sounds awesome! Maybe Omegas are gifted to hunters or something?))

Sam had never wanted to be a Hunter. His father hadn't been a hunter in the traditional sense, which was perhaps why he never got an angel of his own. Or maybe angels were only gifted to certain Hunters. Sam had never been too clear on that and it had seemed rude to ask much about it of Castiel, the one his brother had been given.
Of course, then came the Apocalypse that wasn't and Sam sort of figured that the reason he'd never had an angel of his own was because he was never meant to be himself that long.
(It didn't explain why Dean had been gifted one, if he let himself think about it, but then, Sam tried not to think about that very hard and just be happy for his brother.)
He'd gotten through the worst of being broken down, though, pulled himself back together again...and now found himself facing another angel. One that he definitely felt himself pulled toward.

A broken angel for a broken hunter. It was Zachariah's idea of a bad joke. Gadreel had once been one of the elite charged with guarding and preserving Eden until he'd been deceived by Lucifer and cast into prison for his failure.
But if any human asked, Zachariah was presenting Sam with one of their finest warriors, a worthy Omega to gift to the hunter who had saved the world.
Gadreel knew better than to complain. This was his chance to redeem himself, to offer himself to a human and perhaps find a way to atone.
What he didn't expect was how strongly his body would react to the warm, earthy scent of the tall Alpha waiting for him. "Sam Winchester. My name is Gadreel. I.. I am for you."
no subject
Then again, Castiel shouldn't be around either. Maybe it was just like that.
Sam shifted his stance slightly when the angel spoke, finally offering over his hand. "Hello, Gadreel. It's...it's nice to finally meet you."
Hunters were told that each angel given to them was specially chosen for them. Maybe even made for them, despite when the angel was created compared to when the human had been born. Sam wasn't sure if that was true, especially as the physical body of an angel was just a vessel. Still, Sam couldn't complain about the vessel that Gadreel had found, either. At least, not if they managed to work well on the level of Alpha and Omega, too.

Breathtaking.
"Hello Sam." Mirroring the gesture, Gadreel took his hand. "I must confess, I never thought I would meet the one I was destined for. I will do my best to be worthy."
no subject
He wondered if that was normal, given Castiel being only just shorter than Dean as well.
"And, seriously, don't worry about being worthy. I'm pretty certain it's the other way around, really." He managed a self-deprecating smile. "Between the demon blood and being Lucifer's vessel, I'd say I'm definitely the one who has to worry about being worth of this bond."
no subject
He felt a warm thrum in the core of his being in the presence of Sam, leaving no doubt in his mind that Sam was the one he'd been created for. "And yet you have found redemption Sam. Something that I am struggling for myself."
While he could conceal his crimes, it would do a disservice to the bond he had only just spoken of. "For it was I who was deceived into allowing Lucifer into Eden. Everything that humanity has endured since, was due to my failing."
no subject
The pronouncement of the angel's crimes didn't strike Sam the way he thought it probably should. Maybe it was because part of him knew already, since he'd shared head space with Lucifer. Maybe it was because it made sense, in a way. They had, in their own ways, betrayed humanity. Sam had had his chance to put it right.
He reached up, placing his hand against the back of Gadreel's neck. "You know, for the most part, I can't exactly be upset about it happening. I've seen Eden once. It's pretty, but...I think humanity would have been bored there."
no subject
His vessel is a wolf like Sam and he can't help but react to the presence of the Alpha, instinct telling him what to do next. Slowly Gadreel tips his head back, offering Sam his neck. A gesture of trust, ready to cement his bond willingly with the wolf.
no subject
"You are mine, Gadreel," he said, only barely giving thought to the words. Not quite the right ritual, but it would still work. "And I am yours. There is no darkness in this world that will be able to stand before us."
no subject
He knows what it means to be an Omega, that he will suffer through overwhelming drives to mate during heats, but Gadreel won't presume that Sam will claim him in such a fashion. Not yet.
no subject
Still, when he pulls away, Sam's smile is wide and bright. "You're going to have to meet Dean and Castiel. My brother and his...bonded." His mate, really, but Sam wasn't always certain on the protocol when it came to mating with angels. Maybe it was looked down on.

looping!
There's a clear sense of amused affection in his tone as he glances around the bunker. It's nice. Big, warmly lit. "And I think he's just glad to be around an angel that wants to be around him. Prison.. it wasn't easy on him."
Ben can't help but feel protective of his angel, never minding the fact that he was a powerful angel, older than the Earth itself. He was still vulnerable. Hurting. They needed one another, and he was happy that they both finally had somewhere they belonged. "He's happy here. Really happy."
no subject
He nods slowly, though. "Gadreel hasn't told me a lot about it, but I've seen the effect on angels when they're cut off from the Host for a short amount of time." And when they were cut off for even longer. Though Sam doesn't think about Lucifer if he can avoid it. "When he wants to tell me more, I'll be happy to listen. But the important thing, I hope, is just that he feels safe here. And wanted. So...yeah. I'm really glad that he's happy here." Sam pauses a moment, then smiles. "He makes me happy, being here, honestly."
no subject
“Although,” a smile quirks his lips. “If you two are lookin at a family, you’re gonna have to stay on him to eat more often.”

"Think I'm luckier than most," he allows after a thoughtful pause, finishing one sandwich and going for another of the ones Sam had brought. "I feel like I'm a part of something bigger, something better. He's not alone and neither am I. We talk sometimes, he keeps me involved, I get to see the world around me, it's not like I'm shoved in a box and forgotten, you know?"
no subject
Sam doesn't go for another sandwich, instead leaving the rest for Ben, if he wants them. It's easy enough for Sam to go get more food, after all. "He's a lot better about it than other angels. And since he knows what it's like, I'm not surprised he doesn't just lock you away." Which only makes Sam's heart hurt more for his mate. For both of them. Though he knows very well that there are angels that being locked away and forgotten would be a blessing.
no subject
"Yeah. He.. we talked about that, before I went and said yes." A self-conscious duck of his head as he continued. "I was pretty messed up before he found me. He wanted to make sure that I knew what I was getting into, that it was a partnership, not just shoving me into a box."
Absently, Ben touched the mark on his neck. "He's your mate, but he's my angel too. We both love him in different ways. Gadreel, he's.. he's special. He needs this, Sam. To be a part of something important again. You've given him a sense of purpose. Don't think he's really been able to tell you how much that means. So thank you. Because I ain't sure he always knows how to say it."
no subject
The rest, though, makes him blush slightly. "He is special, yes, and I'm glad to give him that purpose. To be honest, I get just as much from this as him, I think."
no subject
“You’re a good man, Sam. A good Alpha. And I don’t much mind him telling you about me.” His smile turned a bit wistful. “I know I gave up a lot when I said yes, but it was worth it. To know I was part of something bigger. That we’d be together for as long as he might need me. Gotta say I never thought a mate and kids would come into play, but that’s okay too because I think you two are going to be incredible parents. A good home, a good pack, I can’t think of a better place to raise a family.”
Slowly Ben pushes his plate back, drawing in a deep breath and gently prodding the angel inside. “Should probably drop him back in the ol driver’s seat before I get too antsy. He needs to learn the rhythm of it anyway.” Ben extends his hand. “Good luck Sam. ‘m glad I finally got to meet you and I hope this won’t be the last time we talk.”
no subject
He smiles, though, taking Ben's hand. "I don't think it will be the last time we talk. Just...probably not until after the heat has finished."
no subject
A quiet memorial to what he'd lost and a sign of the future for Sam and his angel.
"Please."
