Ill fated hydrophobes beware.

The Boat Meme

And I nearly typoed that in a small, yet horrible, way...anyway.

Maybe you didn't get your damn Thin Mints. Maybe you're tired of rain or maybe you got shot down in a shipping meme. Whatever the case, somehow or another you ended up on a boat. You're on a boat!

...

Okay, okay.

1) Make a comment.

2) Because it worked really well the last time I tried it, in your top level comment throw in a few prompts! Something like...

a. [Joe frantically bilges water.] Oh no! What will we do??

b. [Joe calmly orders a cocktail as the luxury cruise continues to sail over the water, enjoying the sweet decadence about him.]

c. [Whatever the replier wants.]

3) And then the person replying can specify the prompt and yadda yadda.

OPTIONAL, like always, PROMPTS with a myriad and diverse variety of vessels for your delight and wonder:

1) It's the RMS Titanic! Wait. Shit. (Tragic love story optional. Iceburgs less so.)

2) It's the S. S. Minnow! It's small, yet pleasant. The seas are getting a bit rough and the tiny ship's getting beaten and battered, but there's no way this'll end badly, right?

3) It's the Flying Dutchman! A doomed ghost ship never to make port, sailing the seas forever and without a life raft or convenient landmass in sight. How the heck did you end up here?

4) It's the Queen Anne's Revenge! The ship of Blackbeard, you are now living the life of a pirate. Whether you like it or not. Dockpressing might've occurred or you were lured aboard under false pretenses. tl;dr consent optional.

5) It's the Dawn Treader! You are on a brave adventure accompanied by a number of talking animals in search of, well, adventure and truth and things of that sort. Before you lies a fantastical coming of age story in which you discover your true self, learn from your mistakes, and become a better person...well, maybe.

6) It's the Sea Cucumber! It seems pleasant enough, and getting off will surely be easy. Right? Well, once you get rid of the huge bust by picking up the mop, using the mop with the stuffed duck in your inventory, use stuffed duck on a stick with the bookshelves, pick up dictionary...

7) It's the life raft of a no doubt awesome (except for the sinking part) vessel you were previously on! Well...crap.

((NEVER GET OUT OF THE BOAT. Boats are pretty much Willard's best friends. Except not really.

option a: it's 1969 and we're headed up Vietnam's Nung River in a PBR, on our way to confront a mysterious and supposedly INSANE Colonel.

option b: it's 1969 and we're on the Nung River getting the fuck away from the confrontation with said Colonel.

option c through whatever: any of prompts 1-7, or any other you choose. am up for mmm yeah pretty much anything.

in either of the first two options, Willard is an officer traveling with the crew. for other options, he can be anything, anywhere, any time. just don't expect him to be the cheeriest of campers.

if you're up for anything, let me know and i'll be happy to write up a starter post for us. merci!))

3 and 4 sound like lots of fun, but there's another possibility as well.

It's the Black Freighter! (From Watchmen and the Threepenny Opera.) The souls of the violent damned ride the waves, always seeking to add to their number.

ooc: So I came up with some potential starters down there, feel free to go with either or coming up with one of your own! I'm actually good with any of the numbers, so if you want some sort of starter for one I haven't included just ask for it. Kept them a little vague/general on purpose to make it easier if you'd like to make some sort of AU happen. I would be all on board with that so if you want the boat to actually be a spaceship you are very welcome to make it so!

2. [ You don't have to be a sailor to know that the storm clouds approaching this vessel are a very bad omen indeed. Brienne is silent as she stands by the railing, her knuckles shining white so tight is her grip on the wood. She's keeping her balance well enough, even though the waves have been getting higher and higher for the last our or so and the wind is whipping her cloak about so hard she has the fleeting thought that it might tear itself loose and fly into the sea.

She can see an island just by the horizon, and she keeps her eyes fixed on it, wondering if it would be possible to swim there should the boat fail to ride out the oncoming storm.
]

4. [ It stinks below deck, the sour, oppressive odour of unwashed bodies mingling with all other smells to make just about anything repulsive. The ropes around her wrists chafe and the gag makes it hard to breathe, but she is determined to get out of here and get her revenge. These pirates didn't know what they were getting themselves into when they caught her. ]

7. Were you planning on letting me do all of the rowing? [ Granted she's strong, but she won't last all the way to shore all right? It stings a little to admit it, but there you have it. ]

[Jaqen, who has been watching her with just a hint of smug approval, gives her a pointed look.]

A knight is strong, a man has faith in her.

[He isn't going to help unless she asks him. Or threatens to throw him out of the boat.]

[personal profile] chivalrouswench 2013-07-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The sheer annoyance that look on his face awakens in her somehow lets her find as of yet untapped reserves of strength, and she rows harder. ]

A man's faith is perfectly useless unless it's backed up with action. [ Said pointedly as she glares at him, before muttering mostly to herself: ] That had better actually be an island over there.

[ The little speck on the horizon could be just about anything, really. It could even be an illusion brought on by the light somehow, but she's trying not to think about that because she is not dying in this little boat together with... whatever you call that smug thing. Certainly not a man. ]

[Throughout the journey, Morgan has been keeping to herself. Exile, in on itself, is bad enough, a certain aversion to the sea, the effects brought on by having to avoid the use of magic, and the early onset of her... condition - it's easy to say that she has hardly ever felt worse in her life.

Nevertheless, she has taken an interest in Brienne. A female knight... Now, if she could be able to convince the other woman to join forces --

They never quite got so far, as their ship, a merchant's vessel, got attacked by pirates, who promptly captured them and a few of their companions, none of which lasted for very long.

And now, after way too long for her taste, Morgan managed to free herself from the gag, taking her first free breath - and instantly regretting doing so, as the foul air had her gagging and coughing.]

A sailor spoke of a Drowned God who reigns over the seas. A man hopes for solid ground, for the drowned do not know mercy.

[He doesn't seem to be worried at all, he doesn't even glance over his shoulder to confirm or deny her suspicions.]

A knight shall ask and she will receive.
chivalrouswench: (Worship of the lady from afar)

[personal profile] chivalrouswench 2013-07-07 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
A knight shouldn't have to.

[ Oh no, she's starting to talk like the bastard. She shakes her head a little as if to clear it of his convoluted and flowery speech pattern. ]

You're not injured, or old, or in any other way frail. A noble man would offer.

[ She doesn't even know why she's being stubborn about this, but in a way it's almost a help. So much easier to be angry with Jaqen than to think about the fate that awaits them both should there not be land up ahead. ]

[personal profile] chivalrouswench 2013-07-07 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Brienne makes another attempt to scrape her chin against her shoulder to get the gag out of her mouth, but after a couple of failed attempts she merely nods.

Yes, she can swim.

She feels as if she owes Morgan a debt of sorts. She should have protected her when they were attacked. She is obviously not a warrior, it is a knight's duty to defend those who cannot defend themselves.

But she had failed. She had failed every soul on that ship.

[She does have a point, he has to admit. And Jaqen H'ghar is nothing if not unpronounceable and full of honor.]

A nobleman holds little respect for a lady and less for a knight.

[At least judging from the nobility he has come across.]

A man shall help, if a knight wishes to rest.

[She had been lucky with the gag, but finds that the ropes with which her hands are tied are far less cooperative. If only she could use magic, but with Brienne so close and a ship full of pirates - who likely would not be fond of witchcraft - she doesn't dare.]

I heard them speak of a harbor. We should reach it soon, and we have to have freed ourselves by the time they do in order to escape.

[She gives Brienne a long look.]

Unless you wish to be here when they return, drunk and violent?
chivalrouswench: (Virtuous rejection by the lady)

[ She gives him a look as if to say 'you know damn well what I meant', but when he extends an offer to help she drops her gaze to just stare at her own feet, suddenly feeling intensely awkward for no particular reason that she could easily name. ]

I can row a while yet, but I will let you know when I need rest.

A knight does not need to prove herself.

[Not to him, at least. While he quickly found out which buttons to push to drive her mad, there are a few he'd avoid - and more than a few things that have earned her his admiration.

He reaches for the oars.]
chivalrouswench: (Declaration of passionate devotion)

[personal profile] chivalrouswench 2013-07-07 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Brienne shakes her head, and then through nods and pointed glances tries to communicate to Morgan that if they were to sit up back to back, she could untie the other woman's bonds.

It's not an easy thing to try to get across, but she has to try and since Morgan was already speaking of getting free it's entirely possible that she's thought of this herself.

[Morgan looks confusion for a moment, and just when she is about to ask, it sinks in. Her eyes widen at the realization and she smiles.

It's about time for a bit of a silver lining.

Slowly, to avoid making noise or getting herself in a position that would leave her unable to move, Morgan edges closer to Brienne.]

[ She lets him take them, seeing the value in not letting herself get completely exhausted before allowing him take over, but also feeling the burn of a blush on her cheeks. He has a gift for making her feel ridiculous, for all that he is an oddity of a person himself. ]

I wasn't trying to.

[ Though perhaps she had been, a little bit. It's a hard habit to break. ]
chivalrouswench: (which win the lady's heart)

Just wait until Brienne cracks a smile. Then we can talk about not having icons.

[personal profile] chivalrouswench 2013-07-07 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh, she understood! Brienne doesn't quite smile, but her expression lightens considerably as she starts to make her way closer to Morgan as well. Her legs are bound together so it takes a considerable amount of wriggling, but slowly but surely it is happening nonetheless. ]

[He rows, and it is quite obvious that it isn't the first time he has done it.]

A knight has not had a simple life, a man understands. She set herself the goals of a honorable man, yet all these noble men forget about their vows once she approaches as a knight.

[ Brienne turns as well, her fingers immediately starting to work on the knots keeping Morgan's wrists tied together. [personal profile] anonyman 2013-07-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
A knight's strength surpasses many a man's. The drowned companions spoke naught but ill of her comeliness, yet a knight shines brighter than all of them.

[Someone doesn't mourn the dead. All the while, he watches her, while continuing to row as if it is no hardship to him.]

And now a man must inquire whether the island we approach is but an illusion.

[Morgan attributes this to the stupidity of men in general, which is a topic they absolutely have to discuss.

Finally free, she turns and first removes Brienne's gag, as breathing seems to be the more pressing issue. Next, she starts working on the rope around her wrists, quicker than Brienne if only due to the fact that she can actually see what she is doing.]

[ She's known for quite some time now that his appearance is somewhat deceptive. He is a deadly man indeed, and she'd be a fool if she allowed herself to forget it.

Naturally his words only makes her blush more fierce, so she is glad that she can look to the horizon rather than meet his gaze.

I... I do think there is actually something there. Now the question is whether or not there is any water there.
