[His sleep is littered with half nightmares about being chased down through the woods he's in the middle of by staying in his house. Only half nightmares because he manages to kick himself awake right as he feels hot breath against his throat, but he falls right back asleep into a similar scenario moments later.

In the last one he has, he's actually chased out of the house first and the sound of the door hitting the wall once it opens has him waking up and sitting bolt upright, eyes wide. Because he either just had a very vivid dream or something is actually in the house and coming after him.

And there's only one staircase that leads right down to the front door, so checking to see which one it is isn't something he wants to do. But, being upstairs means he's shit out of luck on actually getting himself out of the house, too, because human bones don't heal if they break in a fall.

So, yes, he's trying to calm his breathing down so he's not so obvious, but his heart pounding away in his chest is definitely enough to give him away if anything is in the house.]
