NOT just A ROBOT

There's always a right tool for the job, be it as simple as a hammer for a nail or on up to the much, much more complex. In this, the near future, the new tool for the abstract, post-modern job is no longer from the humble tool box - it's robots. Robots have taken over most sectors, such as assembly, law enforcement, and even health care. Things run so much smoother when they're automated. Yet the most impressive factor is that robots have just recently begun to enter a sector previously believed to require human touch: the personal sector. From personal assistants to robo bodyguards to pleasurebots, most anyone who's anyone has a personal robot these days. Of course, humanity being the narcissistic charmers we are, all "companion" sector robots are made in our own beautiful image, or close to it.

But you know this. You have a personal robot, after all...or you are one.

Whether owner or robot, it's important to remember one key rule: robots, no matter how human they appear, cannot feel emotions. Any appearances thereof are programming in the AI.

Robots certainly, absolutely, cannot fall in love. Again, any appearances thereof are programming in the AI. If that's not the case, and "love" still seems present...

...well, a toll that no longer functions correctly may not be right for the job.

HOW TO PLAY ➟

Comment with your character, preference, and whether you want to play a human or a robot.
Reply to others.
Use the RNG to choose a prompt or pick one yourself.

OWNER ➟

Long Time Owner → You and your robot are a well-oiled machine, no pun intended.
New Purchase → Congratulations, you have your brand new personal bot!
Second Hand → Someone else owned this robot before you, but it can't be too damaged. There's no way you could afford a brand new one, anyway.
For Science! → Your interests in robots are purely scientific. No matter how yours begins to act towards you, honest!
Rescue → Whether you took them from the dump or from a bad owner, you brought this robot from the jaws of deletion.
Reluctant → You never wanted a robot, but you've got one thrust on you anyway.
Cruel → They're just a fancy computer, so you'll treat them however you like.
See the Humanity → Even if you know it's all machinery and programming, you can't help but see the human side of your robot. They shouldn't have to be a servant.
What's Real and What's Not → The lines are beginning to blur between real people and their emotions and your robot.
Incompatible → You can't be with a machine, either romantically or sexually. You're simply not compatible.
Too Engrossed → They say you've created a fantasy world. You're forgetting reality, or choosing to ignore it.
Don't Care → You won't listen to what the others say; you know how you feel.
Have to Pull Away → The close relationship you had with your robot has to be put aside for your own good.
Live a Normal Life → As much as you can, you and your robot live like a normal couple.
Bad End → Your robot is taken away, reprogrammed, or destroyed.

ROBOT ➟

The Perfect Robot → You know what you and exactly what you were made to do. You will not stray.
More Human than Human → Whoever programmed you made you to be just like a human.
Conflicted → There is no way you could have what they call "feelings." But what is this stirring in your circuitry?
Confused → Why do people treat you like a robot? You're a living thing, damn it!
Damaged → Somehow, you've been corrupted. You're a blank slate and have to be cared for, though it should be the opposite. Or it could be that you're showing erratic behavior that no robot should...
Shown Kindness → When you're treated kindly by a human, you are unsure how to process it. It makes you feel - content.
No Longer Just a Program → Your "love" and "affection" may have been shades and imitations at first, but that's not the case any longer.
Obsolete Model → You know you're old. Will you be forced to leave your master's side?
Jealousy → A robot should not feel jealous. Still, you envy those close to your master.
Job is Personal → You were programmed to protect or to serve, though you also do it because you...care
Second Chance → Your old master tossed you aside and now you are wary. But you've been given another chance instead of being used for scrap.
Rogue → There is no way you will be tied to the oppressive system. You refuse to serve the Living Things. Somehow, though, you've become aligned with one.
One of a Kind → There are no other robots like you, and perhaps you are intended for a sinister fate. Rather than face your true duty, you have escaped to take refuge with a human.
Specialty → You were created specifically for this one special person.
Reprogrammed → Because of previous defects, you were taken back to factory settings before. However, that treacherous virus, "love," is bubbling back up.
Android → You can't just forget the part of you that was - still is - organic.
Learn to Be Human → Despite the odds and the prejudices you both will face, you have decided to live as a free, living person with the one you care for most.
Bad End → You're to be junked, impacted, wiped clean, or taken away from your owner.

( socialite heiress discovers she is a cutting edge, custom made replacement for the dead woman she was made in the image of at the private commission of a grieving father. )

[We've got two options here: former Special Forces kill-bot, who got rescued and has learned so many more skills now
Or: Caretaker model with a specialty in cooking, but who took the 'caretaker' thing REAL damn seriously so he's got a fuckton of after-market combat and sundry subroutines.

Either way, he's also passing as a human, which could get dicey.]

[Probably the human, I can see her getting some kind of caretaker/companion/nurse 'bot while she's recovering from getting Vecna'd, and she would be very sympathetic because no one should have to deal with her mother even if they are an android.]

[He's an Augmented Human, and as this was done against his will he's definitely got a soft spot for robots, especially older models set for decommission or whatever.
He's also got a repair shop/halfway house that's known in the robot circles for being where to go to get tags changed (essentially) he'll do whatever it takes to get them into a new line of work in a new sector/city]

[Executive administrative assistant model? Life Model Decoy? Whatever the case she's probably passing as human and has an encyclopedic knowledge of not just Tony's schedule, but the schedules of the whole team and Stark Industries employees.

And that's not even touching on her Rescue persona which is the one with the combat & field medic modules.]

[Okay but consider: Wayne as a caretaker robot passing as human, Eddie's the one who knows because Eddie's the one who keeps him running. Which probably also means aside from keeping his rattletrap van running, he's the go-to guy for rogue android repair.
Alternately: Eddie as some kind of storytelling & interactive playtime robot (D&D DM!) but he just wants to make music.]

[She's the sort of person who has an entourage as often as not, a retinue even, and no one's going to know whether they're human or whether they're robots. More than that: there have been plenty of rumors about the woman herself not being all that she seems.]

[Bots come in Animal Companion™ style, right? You know that medication and appointment reminders are probably easier to take coming from an adorable critter than a nannybot.
Plus he's warm and huggable/pettable and can do that calming heartbeat thing for the anxious ones.]

[Either he's a slightly-glitchy caretaker type robot who will go to extremes to keep his charges safe, or he's out there being a mother hen to a bunch of actual kids and a bunch of rescued robots.]

[She was a performer (think if Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Players or The Rock-afire Explosion were y'know, human) who worked high-end music venues. Except she super hated that because holy exploitation batman, so she escaped that and lives out in the fringes of civilization now, helping others do the same wherever she can.]

[ the master sword is a familiar and welcome weight on his back. while it was gone, it was as if a piece of him had been missing. he made do with what he could (sticks, decaying weapons, zonai tools) but the sword was more than a weapon -- a partner, from the moment he had drawn it. the soul of the hero was connected with this blade. he didn't need the ability to talk to spirits to know that.

there's a lot more gleaming and resonating than usual, though, that he realizes something is different. he swears he can hear a voice. ster? what's ster?

sure-footed steps pause on his path and he reaches over his shoulder, drawing the weapon with a ring. he looks down at the beautiful, gleaming edge infused with sacred power and glimpses his own reflection and the sun. ]

What is it? [ link questions softly. something possessing him to ask the sword itself. as if it can answer.

no, not it. she. ]

[As if called by that ring, a figure emerges from the sword, a blue and purple girl whose blank expression looks briefly and subtly confused. She does not turn to look at her surroundings, after all, she's aware of them from within the sword. They are unfamiliar, as she noted immediately upon gaining awareness, and she begins analyzing what she can. The process isn't visible, she executes it all while appearing to do nothing but float in front of Link.]

Master, I have not yet finished my calculations, but you have strayed significantly from your objective. Do you require assistance?

[Yes, she notices that Link looks different, but he still registers as Link all the same. Hairdos, height, or clothing seem unimportant compared to other discrepancies. For example,]

My vessel has been altered, it is now the revitalized Master Sword. [doododododo sound effect. Yes, she's a little late to that.]

link gasps as a girl appears in front of him, eyes wide. for a moment, all they do is stare at each other. and for once, his expression isn't a blank one.

his fingers flex, gripping the hilt of the sword tighter, once she speaks. a voice he knows? how? he would have remembered (he made a point to remember now) her if they met. he wracks his brain for ]

Master? [ the sound chime is pavlov for him to get excited but he's too confused to smile or feel anything but a resounding what is going on? not unlike how his Big Adventures usually start. he's already in the middle of one can she wait a bit... ]

Um. Zelda...? [ he has to mAKE SURE. ]

[If she could sigh right now, she would. Fortunately, Hylia didn't create her that way. Instead she just stares as she corrects him.]

There is a .00000000489% chance that I am Zelda. By this percentile, it is safe to assume I am not Zelda.

Alright. Next thing. Can you answer how you came from the Master Sword, Fi?

[She recalculates, factoring in now the location and Link's change in appearance. It is not that Link has abandoned his objective. No, it's very likely her master completed his objective as was foretold. When she searches for the memories, she finds that they even exist in her storage. Trying to view them, however, is impossible at the moment. She feels a flicker of something, and to feel something at all is still so alien that it surprises her. Surprise... is she able to feel surprise too?]

I was created by the Goddess to guide the chosen hero, that is my sole purpose.

[But since he doesn't seem able to do calculations of his own, she continues,]

It is most likely that upon completing my duty, I deemed that my consciousness no longer required this form in order to guide future reincarnations. I sense still, that we have been together some time, and that you are my Master. I cannot answer as to why I am awake now, as I do not know the answer myself.

link's face goes through a range of emotions, though they are very subtle. the slight downturn of his mouth. his eyebrows raising a fraction of an inch. his eyes darting to the sword and between her, once again.

master. he's her master, she says. yeah, they've been together for some time. long enough that he feels naked without her. er, the sword. ]

I'm Link. You can just call me that. [ please. please just call him that. he's been trying to get paya to call him link, too, but she refuses. master link embarrasses him. using all his brain power, he attempts to figure out the puzzle laid before him. just like a riddle.

so she's been sleeping inside the master sword this whole time. and he thought 100 years was a long nap. and it seems like... she was missing some memories, too. that hits close to home. immediately, he wants to help her. ]

We can figure out why you're awake now, Fi. The Deku Tree could know something. Or Zelda. You remember her? [ enough that she could calculate the .00000000489% chance.

I have not yet forgotten your designation, Master.

[So that's a no on dropping the honorifics. She doesn't understand the issue either, as it is the Master Sword. It follows then that the sword possesses a master, which is him. Plus, she already knows he's Link. That's obvious! Even if she can't understand the whys and hows, she knows that to be true no matter what.]

My previous master aimed to find the spirit maiden, the girl known as Zelda. [Her expression falters slightly, even slighter than the changes in Link's own.] Apologies, Master, there is likely falsehood in that statement. There is a 93.7% chance that I have had multiple masters prior to your acquirement of the Master Sword. However, I currently can only access memories of the hero who wielded me first as the Goddess Sword. That is why I have referred to him alone as my previous master, despite the great likelihood that I have aided others as well.

[She's getting off topic, though. He hadn't asked about other Links, he'd asked about Zelda. Fi knows that he doesn't refer to the spirit maiden she's chased after. But... she knows Zelda. She remembers her. Her face. Her gentle voice. Zelda could hear her, and they had... spoken. About what? It feels strange suddenly to be away from her. True, she had been with Link for some time, she could tell that much. At the same time, she had been bathed in an overwhelming light for almost as far back as her memory goes. No, it wasn't that, not exactly. It was the same light from when she was created. The warm embrace of her creator, again.]

I can also confirm that I am familiar with the Princess Zelda of this era.

he always thought it was the master sword because it's the greatest of all blades. the master over evil. but, hey, he can be wrong.

fi having multiple bearers of the blade isn't breaking news to link either. he can confirm that 93.7% up to 100% as far as he's concerned. the story goes that the soul of the hero draws the master sword when there's a great evil, when there's a princess to save and be guardian to.

a small smile tugs his mouth at her apology. the most animated he's been. ] You don't need to apologize.

as with her first master at the mention of Zelda, link perks up. head empty zelda only. his shoulders straighten, his grip tightens on the hilt, and his breathing hitches. there's a boulder in his throat he swallows around. his blue eyes dart around as a number of questions bombard him.
