[Rosa is stunned. And that's grossly understating the shock and dismay that confession evokes in her. How could she have not seen this? Not realized? Had she an inkling, she would have gently discouraged him from going so far. Never would she have lead him on and the idea that somehow she's paining him now is crushing her heart. No, not her friend, the one so close and dear he's like a brother to her.

She cannot reciprocate those feelings. Her heart belongs to Cecil and it has for years. Kain has known this. How often had she begged his opinion on gowns that would catch Cecil's eye? Why she'd told Kain years ago how very much her beloved meant to her. Surely this is a jest, though not once in her lifetime has Rosa ever known Kain to be any sort of a prankster.

Her eyes start to mist over as a sick feeling settles in the pit of her stomach.]
