[The buzz of energy that permeated through the tavern at its peak hours is slowly dwindling. The residual dregs of chatter are now interspersed with quiet as the remaining patrons find solace in silence. Mugs are lifted without hesitation to either find answers at the bottom or help forget what questions drove them to drink at the start.

Kaz notes these elements as he finds a seat in the corner. His back is to a wall, with the vantage point of seeing the rest of the tavern play out its figurative tune. On the stage a performer remains, softly playing a literal one. His gloved hands are steepled, for now ignoring the drink that’s set in front of him. Watered down satisfaction in a mug from what he can tell, but he’s guessing most of these beggars hadn’t another choice.

For his part he’s laying low at the moment, the tavern offering a moment of blending into a crowd while also being a space to keep his ears open. One never knew what opportunities might arise, and he’s nothing if not a man of opportunity.]

{{Eskel might start out as expected: a brooding presence in a shadowy corner. Doing his best to keep out of the way and not frighten the barmaids too much with the ruin of his face or the roughness of his voice. But he likely has plenty of coin to spend and he's likely to spend it on drink and cards as much as anything he actually needs. And when Eskel drinks, he drinks a lot. If there's another witcher with him, he's even more likely to descend into drunkenness.

He's also likely to abandon his isolated corner-- and his resolution to not make trouble-- to defend someone's honor, thereby probably causing a very messy fight to break out, since few can best a witcher.}}

( whiskey and milk...................... yes, that's what she's drinking and she doesn't seem perturbed by it. she's either dancing around if there's a bard playing (if she bumps into people you know she's yoinking something off of em), or is playing along with a panflute. )

[Glad to AU into a fantasy setting; a servant with an unassuming attitude Ducky's mostly hear to eavesdrop on other people's conversations and learn their secrets, but she'd be glad to engage you in a conversation on war strategy, politics, history or the best ways to remove grease pencil from your parlor walls.]

Between the hearth fire and the milling bodies, it was thankfully warm inside the tavern. The road leading up to here had been one full of mud and rain, though Caleb’s garments were surprisingly dry for such a downpour. Not that many gave the man more than a passing glance when he’d entered to have noticed. He knew well how to either blend in as he was doing now or make himself a pitiful enough sight that many looked away. Each could be useful depending on the situation, though now he was simply laying low to wait out the storm and plan his next steps. On first glance his brown robes, purple scarf, gloved hands and messily knotted back hair screamed scholar rather than threat.

Though the two went together better than many surmised.

He was happy for the patrons’ disinterest right now though because it meant he could tuck himself into a table and work. In front of him was a stack of books, very neatly stacked in fact, and one opened in front of him in which he was making notes. Beside him wrapped in worn fabric were two oddly-shaped items that he needed to identify, ones that had caught his curiosity when leaving an abode he’d recently broken into. This was his life these days, teacher and thief. Or more precisely, teacher and spy who helped keep eyes on old enemies. It created a surprisingly satisfying balance. He ordered a bottle of whiskey which was placed near him, the glass beside him hardly touched just yet.

It was easy for him to tunnel into his work and shut out the world, but he was too ready for danger to let himself entirely get lost in thought. He noticed when a very particular fellow entered the establishment as well. The magic wasn’t one he could pinpoint on sight and sense, but it was powerful nonetheless. Though what Caleb noticed beyond that, not in spite of that, was how the crowded inn left little space for anyone else to sit.

Well. He’d claimed more than his fair share of space, spreading his items across the table and piling them next to him. He gave a little sigh, but not wanting to be a complete ass, moved the pile of books next to him. His accent was soft as his words were not without some good humor. “There’s space if you need a seat. Sharing the bottle though is another story.”

[His mother was a fire genasi, his father was an orc warlord, and here he is, just trying to make his way in the world. He sort of fell into being a ranger, it's generally solitary work, but he doesn't mind it.

He's pale enough to be a sort of seasick green at all times, though in the low light of a tavern, mostly covered up, it's less easy to tell, and his shock of red hair is carefully, skillfully braided back away from his face both to keep it out of his way and to keep his horns hidden. He's definitely half something, but there's a lot of half-somethings around, one more isn't going to gain that much notice.

Unless his reputation has gotten here first...]

[She's a pirate, there's a number of reasons she'd be in a tavern. Maybe she works there, maybe she's looking for work, maybe she's just hiding out from trouble outside, the list goes on!

Post-apocalyptic, sea-levels rose exponentially sending us back to seafaring again (this would be the usual immortal version on her profile)
