The Other Mother Meme

Everyone has one. A better mother. One that loves you more, is nicer, will give you anything you've ever wanted. There's just something...off. Everything is too perfect.
But, hey, you're finally happy. What more could you ask for?

There's just one thing you have to do for her.

The buttons have to go on.

How To Play

1. Comment with your journal, listing name and fandom.

2. Other people reply to you based on what number they draw. You both roll RNG to detirmine who is the victim (1) and who is the rescuer (2).

3. Roll RNG (1-10) to chose your scene.

4. Have fun!

1. I fixed them

You're not you. Not really. The Other Mother made you to be her new pet's friend. And her spy. Only you don't want to help her. You have to tell them. But how? Maybe something's stopping you; you're mute, the words just won't come or maybe the Other Mother finds you just as you start.

2. Ghost Kids

She loved you once upon a time. And you let her sew the buttons on, because she told you she would let you stay forever? Who wouldn't want that? But then slowly...very slowly, she ate you up. Now she's hunting a new pet. A new meal. You have to stop it before they end up like you! But how...you're a ghost now...how can you reach them?
Guess you better figure it out.

3. Other Father

You don't really want to make them stay, but you're forced to. Break it to the kid gently that their fate fucking sucks.

4. She Hates Cats

You come and go as you please. The Other Mother simply hates that - and you. She thinks you're vermin, a pest, horrible. How better to repay her than to ruin her next snack by saving it from her cluthes?

5. Neighbor Kid

You've lived here all your life, and there's a new neighbor! You're not sure if you like this new kid, but Granny's been telling you stories and the kid's acting funny. Funnier. And if it means skipping chores or homework, it's worth checking in on them, right?
You follow them through that tiny door, and what you find is so...strange. Everyone's looking at you funny though, treating you like you don't belong. Something's off, what is it? Maybe it's best to listen to yer gut and get the two of you out of there.

(You can make your own relationship to the victim too.)

6. Real Familial Figures

You're not sure what's going on but you have noticed the disappearances. You know that whoever lives in that house, some kid vanishes. And it needs to stop. Pretend you're a family member or close enough to be one. Figure out what's going on before their friend/child/sibling vanishes again and doesn't come back like all the others.

7. Black is Traditional

You tried to stop it. You really did. But you're just seconds too late. They're sewing the buttons onto their eyes just as you arrive. What you tried to stop can't be undone. Do you watch? Do you do something?

8. It's Finally Over

The Other Mother has been defeated - or so you hope - and you're now back in the real world. Play out how it immediately affects your life. The aftermath can be bloody.

9. Revenge of the Beldame

You've been married/together with the person you once faced the Other Mother with. And defeated. Or so you thought. But now she's back and she has your kid. How do you prove it to your significant other and how are you going to get them back?

[Oh, dear, not another one. He's not sure if he just has a very suspicious nature or if the Beldame is usually better at picking unhappy, credulous children. Probably a bit of both.]

[He watches from up high while she shows her glittering spiderweb to the newest pet, skulking in the darkness she provides plenty of behind the facades and that he makes himself pretty ably. He waits for her to leave him alone, as she inevitably will, to let it all soak in.]

[And in a puff of pinkish, sulfurous smoke, he appears behind the new toy, perched up on a branch at shoulder height.]

Hi, there.

[Regulus watched as his Other Mother strolled back into the Not Grimmauld Place. This Other Mother looked like Walburga Black in almost every way... except she smiled more, had yet to scream at anyone or anything, and actually seemed to act like a proper mother. And the glittering buttons for eyes, there was that too.

The Other Father was warmer and didn't just look through them all like they were a temporary nuisance to be tolerated. There was even a Other Sirius, happy and eager to not just be around Regulus but with the rest of them as well.

And they all had buttons for eyes...

Regulus yelped at the puff of smoke and the unexpected voice from behind him. He turned and stared at the newcomer.]

Where... Where are your buttons?

[The buttons, as it happened, had been a major clue that he didn't want anything to do with this deal. He was rather proud of his eyes, in point of fact. Blank, golden, and faintly glowing, they were one of the cooler things about being him. He turned the shimmering gaze full-force on the other boy and grinned a slightly fangy grin.]

It's not a good look for me.

[He dropped from the branch to his habitual low crouch, tail lashing comfortably behind him and down on one knee to scan their surroundings from a vantage point that would let him vanish back into the shadows in a second if he liked.]

What's she shown you so far, man? That house over there is kinda spooky.

[Said the creature who looked a bit like a demon off a Medieval manuscript had leaped out for a bit of conversation.]

[It was true that there were plenty of books in Grimmauld Place that told how to summon creatures that looked much like this one - but not even the Black Family were that reckless. Besides, he had a feeling those demons weren't blue.]

[Regulus glanced back at the Other Grimmauld Place and shook his head.]

It actually looks better than the real one.

[It was also standing alone rather than hiding between the muggle buildings. It was a bit unnerving to see it revealed completely and to see the outside of it clean and maintained. There was no real need to take care of the outside of a house few people ever saw.]

Huh. Really?

[He'd seen weirder, but not a lot weirder.]

Well, that's her thing, I guess.

[Kurt stood, revealing that he was a bit shorter than Regulus, mostly thanks to the somewhat inhuman downward curve of his spine. He leaned forward exaggeratedly, making a point of examining her handiwork.]

There'd kind of be no point if it didn't.

[Regulus looked at the strange creature.]

How do you mean?

[As unsettling as the lack of eyes were, everything was much... better than at home. He wasn't sure if he liked it but it was better. Closer to what people outside of the Black Family told him their home was like.]

Oh, nothing. Everything's just super perfect, right? The way you'd make it if you were in charge.

[It was a bit of a pet peeve. Wishes made the perfect trap. Maybe it was learning that early that had kept him from being entranced this way.]

But how, you know, possible does it seem? And this is coming from the blue guy. Impossible's not one of my favorite words.

[Regulus considered this.]

[He could, potentially, see Mother acting kindly if everything went exactly as she wanted and thus had no reason to be angry; He could see Father giving a damn if Sirius or Reg had done something to warrant it; and he could see Sirius actually treating him like a brother again... if Regulus met all of his conditions instead of their parents. But to have all them all act this way for no reason?]

[Unconditional love was a myth in the Black family.]

[No, as much as he might like it, Orion only married Walburga from obligation and Sirius's personality was a bit too similar to Walburga's to allow any kind of peace between them or anyone else involved.]

I suppose so. [Regulus said, a bit sadly] It's not likely.

[He caught on fast. Kurt appreciated that.]

Right. So, hmm, do you know much about the infinite worlds theory? Probably not. Skip that. We know that this here isn't your house and family and stuff.

[He hopped staight up and caught the branch overhead with his tail, dangling like a self-directed marionette. Kurt swept a three-fingered hand dramatically, encompassing all the odd, delightful sights.]

And it couldn't be. So let's just say... They're someone else's. Is someone else gonna selflessly share their better world with you?

[He decided on the fly to be a little less cryptic. This guy seemed to be able to take direct observations pretty well.]

I'll give you a hint. It's hers.

[Regulus turned to look around at the surrounding world and considered this.]

Does it matter? If it's her world?

I guess it doesn't matter that it's somebody's world, all by itself. But let's just say the lady is a tiger.

[It was hard to warn most people about crazy, ageless horrors from beyond understand. He was trying to work up to it organically. But He could see a lot of shifting in the garden around the spookhouse.]

Aaaand I think she's on her way back. Just keep an eye out for what's behind what she shows you.

[He swung up into the tree out of sight.]

[The Other Mother just wanted Derek to be happy. Other Stiles didn't know why he was still around then - she might have made him to suit what Derek wanted out of him but she still made him in the image of the real Stiles.

And the real Stiles wouldn't want to let the idiot just stay here forever and get gobbled.

Only problem was, she'd taken his voice. That what everyone found the most grating about him (real him); his inability to shut up. Well now he couldn't even make a little peep. And wasn't that just perfect.

And here they were. Another day, another parade of love. Oh, he was getting sick of playing along.

Once Other Stiles was a little more sure the Other Mother was preoccupied he tugged Derek away from her - just a little ways. She'd be able to tell if he was leaving.]
