Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

Mitsuhide never had an owner before. Which was odd, considering fox pet people are a luxury breed. And with his pure white ears and tail, it was even more surprising that he wasn't already owned by some breeder. Yet somehow he was a stray that ended up at a rescue.

Well, he was at the rescue just a few hours ago. Now he was walking with a young woman as they went to stores to get the things he would need for his new life with her.

He regarded her before speaking up. "Am I the first pet you've ever owned, little mistress?"

It was something she always wanted but never gotten. Her siblings got a pet but she never was allowed to interact or have one of her own. Today was the day that she will finally get what she had always wanted: A pet to call her own.

She had studied and went to various rescues and shelters but never found one that just clicked with her. That is until she saw Mitsuhide. At first she was curious as to why such a beautiful and handsome pet was in the rescue and why no one snatched him up.

Her surprise grew when she was able to adopt him and yup, a shopping spree happened! He was going to be the best treated pet to make him the envy of others!

In the middle of shopping, she blinks at his question and blushes a little. "Yes... You are. But I promise to be the best master so that you won't have any worry!" And now so much blushing and she can't help but to pout. "And no need to call me little mistress. Just Leanne."

Nope, gonna try to hide the fact that she doesn't like it that she is small.

He gave a bit of a chuckle, the sound coming out smooth as silk. "But you're so petite and cute that I think 'little mistress' suits you."

It felt so easy and natural to just tease her. The main reason he never had an owner before was due to the fact he made it very difficult for any potential adopters the choose him. Giving them a bad attitude and making it clear that he wouldn't be easy to tame drove most of them away.

But when he saw Leanne, just something in him wouldn't let him do his usual routine to drive her away. Instead, he found himself not minding her being his owner. The result was that he made himself more appealing to her and it worked.

"You're my first owner as well. Though," he holds up one of the shopping bags. "I think you may be going a little overboard with the spending. This should be plenty for now."

Seriously, how many outfits is she going to buy for him?

That chuckle should not sound as smooth as it did and OH NO HE JUST DIDN'T DO THAT! Yup, her cheeks remained a little puff out as she pouts.

"But I am not little. And Leanne is a much better fit." She has yet to learn to not feed the trolls.

If she ever learned that he acted the way he did only towards her, she will have to ask him the reason. But yet, she couldn't explained just how she felt a connection with him at least on her end.

"I am?" That was surprising, but then again... He was in the rescue. "Really? Are you sure that I am not getting too little? You don't need to hold back if you want anything."

So many treats, outfits, toys, grooming items and other items to get.

The answer to that question is always yes.

[ master, pet, both of them being pets, i can roll with whatever! you either get a pampered, nearly impossible to find purebed cat that's affectionate but high energy, or a master that has more money than he knows what to do with and spoils his pet but is rarely actually around because he's too bus working ten jobs. ]

Located on the outskirts of the city there's a local farm that operates as a shelter. Once in a while, they hold an event for adoption open to all to help pets find new homes. Behind the glass window where there's an indoor grass meadow, there are many rabbits and it was separated into two rooms, one filled with females and another full of males.

The rabbits are not ordinary rabbits, but rabbit people. Some are born, bred and educated to be companions for humans. Some are rescued and stay in rehab to heal before moving on and finding a forever home.

The farmer and his family who raised and cared for the pet people talked to Leanne a little bit about the rabbits while showing her around the farm as a tour. "Are you sure? Rabbits need a lot of space and care. Some are vegetarians and some are omnivores and can eat a little meat. It depends on their preference." He said.

The rabbits are full of energy that some of them were curious to peer at her from the other side of the window. The only male rabbit that didn't bother to come up is the one with a deep shade of purple fur and wears a pair of glasses. He sits in the corner, reading a book.

"Oh that one? That's Atreus. He's been here for nearly two years. In the past, he picks fights with the young'ons all the time because he was jealous they get adopted first. He's a hard worker and very strong and helps out with the farm so he knows a lot about taking care of himself. He's very quiet and recently learned to read. He's like that, quiet and introverted lately but I think because he's been waiting for a long time and got depressed...but I can keep him until he got the right home." The farmer said.

"If you want him, I can let him out and you can take him out for a walk so you can figure out if it's a match."

Ooooooh~! It was so exciting! She was getting her first pet ever and of course, the pet she wanted the most was a cute fluffy rabbit. So many social media posts and videos about them made her want one to the point that she couldn't really sleep without watching a video.

She followed the farmer and his family, beaming as she listens to them, idly nodding her head as she looks over the rabbits. "I have a nice yard for them to run around in, food also won't be an issue as I will make sure that they will get the best."

Too excited, she was far too excited, almost like a small child on Christmas. Once she was close enough at the window, it took almost all of her willpower not to squeal and to at least have the outward appearance of staying calm. Emerald eyes blink at the sight of Atreus and asked about him, frowning a little at his story.

He... He might be what she was looking for but, how heart breaking was it that everyone ignores him when it comes to adopting a rabbit. It calms down her excitement and she slowly nods her head.

"It... Wouldn't hurt to see if we are a match. I admit that I was looking for a cuddly and playful one but...." She studies the purple furred rabbit. "I hope that we do match, everyone deserves a chance to have a home." She spoke is a much calmer tone, not taking her eyes off of Atreus.

Rabbits are popular pets known for their affectionate nature, charming attractive good looks, and intelligence.

"All right, let see if he likes you." The farmer opens the door. "Atreus, come out. Somebody is interested."

Atreus looked up and looks a bit stunned at first, but he heard clearly. Closing the book and carry under his arm, he got up and is out the door. He is quite tall, his ears are a long length, standing upright with dark purple hues at the tip.

"..." and then, "Good afternoon." He took a good long look at his future owner, studying her. His eyes are a light color of violet under the light behind his glasses. With a nod, he follows her at her heels for a walk and spoke not a single word.

( pet only: she would be a very energetic bird who is clingy with her owner and demands affection 24/7. Is a Black-Crowned Night Heron to be specific. Abnormally small wings so she can not fly. I'm pretty okay with most prompts besides pregnancy. )

Leanne takes a couple steps back to give space from both the window and the door, suddenly feeling nervous. Hopefully he will match with her as he was different from other rabbits, but it could be due to not being picked.

And dang, she couldn't believe just how tall he was. She finds herself blushing a little as he was standing before her.

"Good afternoon, Atreus." She can feel her heart beat increase due to nerves as she starts to walk. His silence was unnerving, she idly bites her lips as she tries to think of something to break the ice with.

"What do you like to do? What foods do you enjoy?" Time to try and break the ice. "What do you hope for in an owner?"

Atreus is just as excited, his heart beats but kept a stoic and expressionless face. Out of fear and doubt and not wanting to raise his hopes up.

After some silence, he was spoken to. A conversation! "Reading, cleaning, and cooking. I begin to like books. I learn a lot." He answered within a beat. "I can eat a little meat, but I like pastries and sweets."

At the last question, he felt inwardly sore that he looks to the side distantly and his feet kicked a pebble hard, feeling lonely and bored all at once. As he was staring distantly at the cows grazing on the grass meadow for a few moments.

"Love me." He answered at last and his ears droop sadly. "And I don't like the other males. They always laugh when they leave and they always said no one will come for me and I'm going to be an old man and die alone."

To die alone is the worst fate for any rabbit and it was considered a dishonor.

She was making mental notes as he speaks, glad to have the silence broken. A warm gentle smile spreads on her face as she looks up at him.

"It seems like we will have a lot of shopping to do.... " If he picks her as his input is just as important as her in this match. "I also eat little meat so that won't be a problem."

She pauses in the walk at his reaction to her last question and frowns. Leanne waited for him to speak again, frowning even more as he seems to shrink. Without thinking, she quickly moves to hug him, trying to hold him close to her.

"You won't have to worry about any other males. You will be my first pet if you pick me. Everyone else was a fool for passing up such a handsome buck."

It was a promise as she gives him a gentle squeeze before slowly letting him go. A promise that he won't be alone again if he goes with her.

"You have as much choice in picking me as your master as I do. Only pick me if you really want to come home with such an inexperienced owner."
