"Dance," Robin repeats, lowering his voice under the hum of conversation and the discordant notes of instruments being properly tuned. He leans close enough that his lips just brush the shell of Geralt's ear when he speaks. "I'm asking you to dance." He settles back to show off the edge of challenge that sharpens his grin and glints in his eyes. "I hope you know how?"

If he's wary of asking--and he is, despite himself, because asking anything requires exposing something in return--he does his level best not to reveal it. His secret isn't much of one; he always wants to dance. He just knows better than to push for something that matters to him.

They could always get in trouble. But they are nowhere that knows them as more than witcher and guest; Geralt cannot slink anywhere thanks to Jaskier but in some places he is less celebrated and more tolerated and Robin has glamour and charm enough to be accepted in any place that he desires.

"Me?" Geralt murmurs, his outfit just a little too plain to fit in amongst the coiffed nobility. "When half the court has been imagining laying you out on the table to feast on? The poor roast pig."

Robin sparkles. He always does. They would make a scene.

Vanity is definitely a weak point, but in this case, Robin has his suspicions that he's being distracted as much as complimented. He leans back in his chair and stretches out one leg just a bit. Just far enough to hook his ankle around the back of Geralt's boot and tug, every so slightly. It's only a little provoking.

"That doesn't seem to be an answer to my question," he notes, as he takes hold of his wine glass and drains it in one long swallow. He sets it on the table again before lifting the same hand and tucking his hair behind one ear. The line of silver rings flashes in the candlelight. So does his grin. "But it's extremely flattering, thank you."

A little provoking? It's only decades of self-control that keep Geralt from clearing the floor with a scandal when that warm calf exerts a soft pressure that moves him forward.

Golden eyes are drawn to quicksilver adornments, of course they are. He knows Robin's games well enough by now-- the real problem is that he lets himself forget when it's convenient. "Do I know how to dance? I was taught by my blademaster." His smile is as unforgiving as the weapons he held as a boy. Fingers wrap against the gilded back of Robin's chair... but the other set is held out between them.

"People will talk." He makes it sound like a promise.

Kyla isn't expecting the witcher to say yes. In fact, she expects him to say no repeatedly, but she has faith in her own stubbornness and powers of persuasion. She is very motivated to not be on her own when she rides out of this town, and if it takes all night to make the broody mutant come around then so be it. It's not like she has anywhere else to be anyway.

She invited herself over to his table as soon as she realised who and what he is, and now she appears to be settling in for a lengthy conversation, offering Geralt a winning smile before biting into an apple that she may or may not have pinched from the tavern kitchen when the cook wasn't paying attention.

When the immediate and heavy sigh for the interruption of his meal doesn't send her away, Geralt resigns himself to sharing his table. People don't often ignore the temperament of witchers; the bald cheek of the action isn't enough for him to grant all her wishes but he won't forcibly eject her and her obviously pilfered mouthful. Not yet. Geralt himself cuts and slowly chews a piece of his gravied meat before bothering to address the ridiculous statement.

"No."

Because it doesn't feel like a job and if that apple is anything to go by, she has no money. He doesn't take on strays because they find an empty chair nearby.

She would be a lot more wary of the witcher's temperament if it wasn't for the fact that some other temperaments are already pretty set on giving her a good beating, but as things stand she needs some backup, and one way or another she intends on getting it.

"Yes, I do. Bit presumptuous of you to think you know better than I what I want for myself, if I'm being honest. You don't even know me."

No, that's not what he meant, and she knows it, and she knows that he knows that she knows, too.

"But we can fix that. I'm Kyla. What's your name?"

Somewhere, Cirilla sleeps the best she can in this new, strange place, Vesemir sleeps with his books and his vodka, Lambert and Coen are fighting over a hand of Gwent, and Eskel is alone with his brother for the first time since he'd just...waltzed into Kaer Morhen with a child surprise, a princess in tow. "You're supposed to be the smart one and you land yourself The Lion Cub of Cintra as a child of surprise? How many other bonds of destiny you hiding from me? First the purple-eyed witch and the djinn and now this?" Eskel rubs the long-healed scars on his face, as he does when he's vexed by something, glowering at Geralt in the near dark (no sense in using up the tallow for candles, if they can see just fine).

A good thing Robin doesn't guess at that wavering self-control, or shattering it would become his new life's purpose.

As things stand, it's the sort of promise that starts a glittering heat beneath his skin--a quicksilver burn through all his veins that tastes like adrenaline on his tongue. He hadn't quite dared to hope that Geralt could dance with all the same grace he uses to wield a sword. Now resistance is nothing but a distant hypothesis, because he has to see it for himself or he'll flare and fade like a struck match. In half an instant, his fingers have tangled with Geralt's and he's already on his feet.

"I should hope so," he murmurs, a dark promise of his own. He's always liked that ruthless edge in Geralt's smile. Maybe he deserves to be provoked a bit, in return, because he can't bite his tongue quickly enough to keep from asking for what Geralt's already offering him. "Show me."

The lack of change in Geralt's face could be read as nonplussed, but then again, people reading emotion into witchers often get little in return for their assumptions. Geralt isn't shocked at the stranger with the loose tongue. He isn't much of anything-- he's a witcher, and people tend to take two courses of action when a witcher shows up: keep as far away as possible and say little, or, beset the man and whip him with a nervous tongue.

He raises an eyebrow and most of it is for Kyla but just breath, less than, is spent in marking a man at the back of the room who seems rather too interested in their conversation. Fuck.

"No," Geralt repeats, though he knows how this will go because the people he keeps around him enjoy pointing out his flaws. He takes another bite of his food.
