[ yesssss I adore time travel. open to damn near anything. attempting a redo on some point of her life (or someone else's), someone else coming forward to her time, her going back to anywhere before her birth, accidental traveling, purposeful traveling to try and change events, getting stuck in a time loop/groundhog day scenario, anything. equally open to fix-it type things as to utter chaos and the timeline getting fucked (literally or figuratively) because Skywalkers are good at chaos.

It was against the rules. Of course it was. Many would point out that wasn't something that would deter Harry Potter, and in this case they would be correct. The opportunity presented itself, and after all that he'd done to help others it seemed like a very, very small ask.

He was helping Hermione get her parents back from where they'd been safely tucked away in Australia. The war was over and the reconstruction had begun. The surviving Death Eaters were forced to make reparations. The world was getting back on its feet. It wasn't just that he was looking for another adventure. But it was right there. A time turner.

It was different from the one he'd seen Hermione with before, the one they'd used to save Sirius. He didn't know who it belonged to, or why it was different, but there was no mistaking what it was. The fact that he didn't really know how to use it didn't deter him for a moment. The war was over. His fight was done.

Now, he was going to try to go back and find his parents. Everything seemed to point to it. Every corner he turned left him aching for any vanishingly small scrap of information about the family he never knew. He couldn't believe that anyone would begrudge him this, even if it was reckless.

Reckless was his brand.

He put the time turner on over his head. Going back a day on the other one was three turns. He needed a lot more than that. The more he turned it, the faster time seemed to spin backwards. He watched the decor of the room he was in change four times. When he finally stopped, there was a newspaper very helpfully on the desk. 1977. Close enough.

Getting back to England was a little trickier, but not impossible. He had one foot in the muggle world already, so it wasn't difficult to make his way with the use of magic. He considered seeking out Dumbledore's help, but it was too risky. When he got back to Scotland, he laid low outside of Hogsmeade, waiting for the first day that the students ventured into the wizarding village. Under the invisibility cloak, he watched for anyone he recognized.

It was his mother he recognized from a distance. He fell into step beside her, still concealed, biding his time for a moment when she was completely alone.
