[ summer has settled on the battlefield of troy, and in their little campsite atop the hill overseeing it, patroclus is lost in thought. he hasn't gone to the medic tent today because he feels too distracted by something he can't quite name. so he waits for achilles to return, making himself busy by tidying up their tent. except the tidying is more just shifting items from one location to another and back again as if he can't decide. eventually he gives that up and flops himself down upon the furs that make up their bed and begins idly picking his way through a basket of figs. he'd managed to squirrel them away earlier, thinking of achilles and how his mouth would taste after he'd indulged.

and then it clicks. the itch he can't seem to scratch has a simple explanation. he just wants his love in his arms ( this and this and this ), he just wants achilles to return to him and their home away from home. ]

(Wishes of that nature can only be granted after Achilles has spent the majority of the day's hot hours afield. He comes back as the sun begins to set, armored and carrying a spear. The weapon is set aside - along with his sword - and then he begins to free himself of his impediments. When next he holds Patroclus, he wants nothing between them.

Shaking his bright hair free of his helmet, he sets it all aside and then peeks into the tent, giving the other half of his soul a coaxing grin:)

[ hearing his beloved's voice, patroclus immediately perks up. in the process, he knocks over the basket of figs and achilles will no doubt hear rustling as he tries to gather them all back. ]

Coming!

[ because when can he ever say no to an offer like that? ]

(He pretends not to notice all of that rustling! If Patroclus has a surprise for him, Achilles won't spoil it. Instead he holds out a hand, callused from throwing spears and using his sword. But that hand will never harm his Patroclus.

Furthermore, if they swim together, he can ensure his beloved's safety too. Though he has made it clear to Thetis, surely. He is mine.)

[ finally emerging from the tent, hands holding he basket behind his back, he smiles at achilles. seeing him after a long day of doing just about nothing is always a pleasure he will hold deep in his chest until the breaking of the world. ]

Like any other day. Made better now that you are here.

[ pressing a kiss to the corner of achilles' mouth, he brings forth the basket. ]

Look what I found for us? I suppose we should save them if we're going swimming.

(He would rather not leave this tent. Waging war is dirty and not at all the glorious pursuit he once imagined. There are no warriors that are his equal and despite the constant pressure for him to face Hector, he has no reason to do so. The prince has not hurt him. Yet.)

Don't I always return?

(Achilles leans into the kiss, reveling in the soft caress. Everything about his day has been hard and rough and unforgiving. His Patroclus is just the opposite.)

Figs? Make sure you hide them. I don't want them stolen before we can partake of them.

(As if anyone would steal from Achilles's tent. They would have to understand the grim fate that would await them if they tried!)

[ he kisses achilles again and then slips back inside to hide their secret delicacy in a secluded corner, then reemerges. his hands are now free for him to slip around his lover's waist and tug him close. ]

[ it's a blessing that no one can match achilles in battle. he's come to expect the other to come back each night, come back to his open arms. even though the prophecy hangs over their heads, as long as it's just the two of them, nothing can go wrong. ]
