the PENPALS meme

THE PENPALS MEME

There's nothing like a little old-fashioned exchange to take your relationships to the next level! Sniff the paper, carry it with you, tuck it into the box under your bed... These are some precious memories you're about to make. Of course, snail mail isn't the only way to your penpal's heart.

HOW TO

1. Post character/preferences.
2. Use the handy-dandy RNG to pick your penpalling method.
3. Roll again to determine the relationship between penpals.
4. ???
5. Profit!

SCENARIOS

001. Regular Old-Fashioned Snail Mail. Perhaps you know whom you're writing to; perhaps it's only someone you've been assigned to write letters to for whatever reason, or you might even be sending your letter to the wrong place. Who knows what happens at the post office?

002. Unconventional Old-Fashioned Some-Kind-Of-Mail. You wake up one day and there's something strange in your mailbox. Maybe it's just sitting there by your bed where your family dropped it off. However you come upon it, you're the more inventive sort of penpal. Exchanges of pictures or presents, songs or sweets, or even dinner, even living creatures; you never know what's going to pop up next, or perhaps you have a system going.

003. Your Wall Is My Wall. And no, not the Facebook sort of wall. I guess we're still going old-school here, because there's a wall, a piece of floor, a ceiling, a desk, some sort of unconventional writing surface where you've found a note and decided to air your own thoughts on the matter. For some reason, the next day there's a reply waiting for you! What on earth have you gotten yourself into?

004. Let The Board Do The Talking. Words or tokens aren't good enough -- you're much more interested in skill. Board games, word games, logic puzzles, riddles, secret code, guessing games about each other's identity -- it's all about showmanship here. Of course, you've never seen your opponent, but you both know where the chess board is and when to check it.

005. Pass It Along. Passing notes is something you do in grade school, but why stop doing it when it's so fun? Besides, it lets you practice your origami. Just take care that your note doesn't meet with an aspiring editor somewhere along the way.

[At some point in the day, a delivery person will stop by to drop off a package for you, Steve. Said package will be a cellphone, a capable little model sitting snugly in its niche, its blank screen clearly visible through the transparent box-cover. The delivery person will rush you through the release forms, as if a deadline loomed overhead, and leave you before you can inquire further about this mysterious delivery.

You will no doubt be suspicious of it. Maybe feel inclined to treat it as a dangerous object. All understandable reactions for a man of your occupation--reactions that someone might have predicted.

For the screen of the phone suddenly comes to life, vibrating through the box, claiming that you now have 1 message in your inbox.

Should you choose to read it, the message is simple:]

If this is Steve McGarrett, pls confirm by sending photo of backyard.

[ This got lost in the mail. It's from Japan and, maybe, has a Japanese address that somehow got smudged into Korea. Who knows! Magic. Watari probably tried to use one of his mechanical inventions to send it and the invention malfunctioned and flew all the way to Korea.

Either way, it's in your mailbox now. And is addressed to Tatsumi. ]

Happy New Year!

This is a test! If this arrived to you safely, you should increase the budget for my experiments! Aren't you in awe of my inventions now?

-- Your awesome colleague, Watari Yutaka!

PS, I didn't put the super-itch formula in the coffee last Tuesday! Tsuzuki probably got it from somewhere else!

PSS, If your sesame oil is gone, it's because I came by to borrow it for 002. Thanks!

[ he opened it accidentally because his roommate had given this to him thinking it was his. he feels kind of bad about it so he mails the original letter back and adds one of his own. ]

I accidentally opened the letter, my apologies. It was delivered to the wrong address. Please try sending it again since it sounds like it might be important.

[ ...oh oops, he didn't really mean to write the last part. that sounds horribly nosy. ]

[ ....There was a miscalculation somewhere in his invention? Le gasp. ]

But I wrote the address clearly... did it get smudged? What state was the letter in when it got to you?

Also, don't worry. Tatsumi got to me even before the letter got to you! No increase... but we'll work on that!

[Steve is very wary of the package looking inside at the phone contained within. Well this was different and through his mind went all sorts of possibilities. Was it a bomb sent by someone he put away? When it buzzed luckily he didn't jump like an idiot and he carefully checked for wires before taking the phone out. He raised a brow looking at the screen and took a photo of his backyard, hitting send. If people showed up he'd just do his best to dispatch them.]

The address was a bit smudged but that's it, the letter was completely intact. Maybe you should use the phone instead.

[ he is thoughtful enough to even send the original envelope back. be in awe of the meme magic ]
