Wings For Everyone!

No, really, it's like Oprah on a bender, everyone gets a pair! They can be feathery, leathery, tattered, pristine, made out of glitter, feathers, tissue paper or star-stuff.

The only limit is your imagination (and reference pics, if that's your thing)

Maybe your character has always had their wings, maybe they just woke up with them for the first time this morning, it's up to you!

[Of course his wings are haliaeetus leucocephalus in variety - big and broad enough to snap bone with a crash of them if you get in the way. Info in journal for shipping etc preferences.]

[He's got the wings of a great great grey owl. They're spectacular when he's in a good mood, but when feeling low, they can get little ratty with old feathers that he just can't be bothered to remove.]

The serum that turned his best friend from a scrawny, angry little punk ready to pick a fight with the world into a super soldier that was taller than him now (and how weird was that?) was something else. The wings though? Bucky did not see those coming at all. Sure it was a genetic anomaly in like one percent of the population but Steve hadn't even been born with them.

Still. They're good in a fight, better for an escape and there's something soothing about forcing Steve to lay down and let him take care of his wings now and then. It's the one thing he can still do for him which is why he's standing outside his room at the Avengers complex, banging on the door.

"Rise and shine punk, lemme in before I break another door and Stark yells at us both."

All in all, the wings were just one more thing for Steve to get used to as part of the whole new body. Puberty had not been particularly kind to him the first time he experienced it, and the second time was only gentler by way of not coming with acne.

As time went on he got better about learning to use the wings - an even dark brown from the down feathers closest to his back all the way to the tips of the farthest primaries. So much in line with the whole 'America!' image they made to sell him that if Erskine had not told him it was a slim but not zero chance he might get them ahead of time he would have thought it had been fully intentional.

The bang of the door roused Steve, who for once was not up at dawn - or maybe he was and Bucky was just up at pre dawn. Sometime in the night he had managed to knock his alarm clock off the side of the bed and it was face down on the floor hiding the time from him. Probably his wings. Especially since sitting up and giving a stretch of them along with his arms, he had to reach out and grab the lamp that he tipped over with one of them before it crashed to the ground too.

"It's open," he called back to Bucky, rubbing his eyes with his palm once he righted the lamp. He tried in vain to settle the itch in his wings that came with them needing a good comb through and grooming, but rubbing them against one another often only made the feeling worse and today was no different. Straining back with his arms he yanked out a small busted covert feather that he could reach on his own. They had taken quite a beating with yesterday's mission and only the sheer exhaustion of the aftermath had Steve skipping Bucky helping him take care of them in favor of immediate rest and he was paying the price for that this morning, it seemed. He had gotten the stupid uniform off at least and managed to get down to just briefs before passing out. He'd slept in his uniform more than a few times and none of it was by choice.

He shoulders the door open and deposits breakfast on the kitchen counter before padding in the half-light back to Steve's bedroom. It had been a late night getting back and they had all gone their separate ways after escaping medical and weapons check to crash out for a few brief hours. He scratches at his stubble and grins at the state of Steve in his room. "Guess it's a good thing I didn't sleep here last night, you'd have put me through the wall."

But it's all in good fun and he makes a turning motion with his hand. "Go on, assume the position pal. Your wings took a hell of a beating yesterday and you need a good going over."

"After I get done you can have breakfast." Further incentive to get Steve to sit still, to not complain and insist that he could do it himself. (he can't).

Steve was still half-tangled in the blankets of his bed anyway, so while he did indeed grump at being ordered about by Bucky it was mostly for show. Yes, he wants to do everything he can for himself by himself - he spent too long struggling for every scrap of self sufficiency he had to let go of that - but … feeling Bucky's strong, steady hands comb through his feathers is a thrill on it's own. He pulls the blankets back so he won't get caught in them again and flops back down onto the bed on his stomach, arms pillowed under his head, wings tucked as flat against his back as they can. With the way the light catches off of the feathers even the slightest twitch of back muscles sends a visible ripple through them, giving away any previous illusion of Steve being able to hold still for any length of time.

"Thank you for your generosity, officer Barnes," Steve replies sarcastically, the last edges of sleep still lacing through his words as the attempted snipe is softened by the yawn that comes after. "Wouldn't put you through a wall. Probably."

[Eagle wings. Specifically the plumage of a juvenile golden eagle. Perhaps humans always have wings, perhaps he only got them on becoming immortal and now has to get used to them.]

"That's Sergeant to you pal," a playful smack at his leg as he climbs onto the bed with him. They've done this before so it's a familiar pattern for him to settle in and start right at the base of his left wing and work his way out, fingers careful and sure as he combs feathers back into place and removes anything broken or too kinked and damaged to survive.

He hums as he continues to work, methodical and gentle. "Already been put through a wall this week, not looking forward to a repeat."

Bucky uses a feather to tickle at his side, "You're lucky 'm not allergic to feathers either."

Steve's leg twitches at the smack to it, barely holding back a laugh as he glances over his shoulder at Bucky. It's such an intimate act, having someone take care of your wings for you, and while necessity has demanded Steve have others help him from time to time he's only been truly comfortible with Bucky's hands on him.

He's tried to describe it before but there's nothing he can compare it to. There's a little pain when a damaged feather gets removed- like the ache of an over-strained muscle, but relief once it's out. He supposes when Bucky gently digs his fingers in it's like fingers through the hair against his scalp but much more intense.

The tickle of a feather against the bare skin of his side gets a sudden burst of laughter from Steve, shaking under Bucky for a moment before he gets himself back under control, feathers noticeably fluffed from the surprise of the tickling.

"Bold action after just saying you didn't want to be put through a wall," Steve threatens jokingly. He used to be awful allergic to feathers, but it went the way of every other allergy with the help of the serum.

[Jess would have raven wings; black and shiny and usually tucked up tight because someone doesn't like to be touched.]
