WARRIOR/GUARDIAN AU MEME

In a world rife with war against monstrous fiends, there are those praised for their natural strength and healing abilities. Marked with a symbol which represents either a sword or shield, these individuals are further powered when contracted with those bearing the opposite symbol. Because of this, contracts are deemed mandatory once an individual turns eighteen years of age.

While contracted, Warriors (sword) and Guardians (shield) become sensitive to one another's emotional and physical states. The stronger the bond between them, the more power and abilities can be unlocked. While it's possible to form and break contracts at any given time, the result is a numb and draining sensation which takes time to recover from, making it in everyone's best interest to keep a lifelong contract. After all, the most legendary pairs are the ones who've been together for many years. And with monstrous armies constantly on the attack, the world needs all the help it can get.

Due to Warriors and Guardians being so vital to the city's survival, they are simultaneously treated as royalty by society and kept under close watch by the government. Powered individuals are assigned large and lavish living spaces within a closed community while Commoners, those who lack powers, are situated in surrounding mediocre homes. A vast shield around the city is among the greatest protection against monsters of the outside world, second to the combined power of brave Warrior and Guardian citizens.

But everything couldn't possibly run as smoothly as they do now without the help of Commoners. Everyone has an important role to play in the world. Which one have you been born into?

HOW TO PLAY -

Post with your character and preferences.
Choose their role and feel free to include a brief summary of ideal partner personalities, job duties, etc.

ROLES

Warrior: Those whose supernatural abilities lie in offensive attacks, physical strength, debuffing the enemy, etc.
Guardian: Those whose supernatural abilities lie in defensive attacks, support, healing, buffing allies, etc.
Commoner: Those who are born without any supernatural abilities. Commoners are viewed as second-class citizens, as their duties revolve around aiding Warriors and Guardians however they can. i.e. Maids, cooks, weaponsmiths, entertainers, etc.
Monster: Those who are the greatest threat to humankind. Because they also possesses supernatural abilities, it's been rumored that they share ancestral ties with Warriors and Guardians. Though Monsters are at war with humans, there are some who are indifferent to them altogether and choose a life of peace.

PROMPTS

The Contract - Could this be your very first or possibly even your thirtieth? Whatever the case, you've trusted them enough to give them a glimpse into your soul so long as you're together. Will you take advantage of that vulnerability? Or use it to build a healthy relationship? Unfortunately, not all contracts are as perfect as they may seem on the surface.

Training - Good teamwork is the difference between life and death so it's important to ensure you and your partner are focused and in sync, especially before a mission.

Bonding - Physical intimacy between Warriors and Guardians is an experience unlike any other, but emotional intimacy is where it all begins. Spend some time together outside of combat, share in each other's interests, get to know their likes and dislikes. It might not seem important at first but in the long run it will make you both stronger.

Mission Time - Is it a long and perilous journey outside the barrier to slay Monsters? A short and simple quest to gather special materials from a specific region? A reconnaissance mission to survey unexplored territory? Whatever you two were assigned, just remember what comes first: keeping each other alive.

Aftercare - The aftermath of a mission can be incredibly taxing, both on the mind and body. Injuries may need to be tended to, emotional states may need to be realigned - especially if you or your partner came close to facing death. But hopefully your partner is there to provide the comfort you'll likely need in this time of vulnerability.

Downtime - When you're busy training or working all the time, it's easy to forget just how lively the city can be. How do you choose to spend your free time in it? Partying the night away? Visiting friends and family? Or maybe you're the type who just likes to stay in for a quiet night.

Different Classes - Whether they're a maid, tailor, or even family, Commoners make up the majority of the city's population. But even if society might see them as lesser doesn't mean they should be treated that way. Over the years, some may despise or be fearful of the supernaturally powered, but there are also some who've developed or maintained close relationships in spite of it all.

Forbidden Love - It's illegal for Warriors and Guardians to develop romantic relations with Commoners, extremely taboo with those they aren't currently contracted to, and utterly unthinkable to even speak to Monsters. But love doesn't discriminate. If you have to sneak around to see your lover then so be it, but sooner or later your partner or the government is bound to find out, right?

On the Run - For whatever reason, you and someone else have decided to start a new life far away from the city and its strict rules. It wasn't easy slipping away from under the government's watchful eye and it won't get any easier with monsters around every corner, but maybe you can find a way to make it work and live happily ever after. Just know that the government always finds a way to get what they want in the end.

( an uncommonly protective Warrior or an uncommonly aggressive Guardian. Could also work as a Monster depending on the scenario. )

( guardian! playful and compassionate, but also a bit jaded and slow to open up from having multiple contracts ended on a whim. will always be protective of his partner regardless. comes from a family of mostly commoners so he'll gladly befriend any or even take some in as 'the help' if they come from unhappy homes. aware he shares dna with monsters and so is somewhat neutral towards them, if not curious. )

( ota, applicable to either role; a wild-eyed dreamer, risk-taker — to the point it's a detriment to her social standing if she's a shield — inventor and book lover. her father and mother were both, to her knowledge, commoners, though her deceased mother was actually a sword who suppressed and lied about her abilities in order to marry Belle's father.

early on in her training, belle developed a reputation of being "peculiar," a label that still haunts her steps as well as taints her prospects of getting a contact. nobody wants to be stuck with someone who's an annoyance at best. worst of all, however, are the rumors that she has sympathy for monsters.

pairs well with stoics ~~(read: grouches)~~ that have strong enough personalities to ground her. )

[ monster (he kills you by siphoning off the years of your life through touch how fun and turns those years into weapons) in self isolation somewhere by the sea. "angel" looks for all intensive purposes, like his namesake — wings, halo, sometimes a holy sword, etc.

a. he's very lazy/forcibly apathetic/detached and doesn't want to fight but he will fight you if you come to, you know, kill him or something. but most of his 'fighting' will consist of running away, not because he's not strong but because he just doesn't want to deal with you.

b. in a very rare but not unheard of case, this monster is in the secret prison the government established, because if there's a better weapon than a 'warrior' it's definitely a 'monster'. there are rumors of 'contracts' made with monsters in fact, but the methods of establishing them and the subsequent results of them aren't common knowledge at all.

c. wildcard. open to discuss other scenarios here or through pm. ]

[ A Sword with a Shield's protective instinct. On the surface, he's the consummate professional. He has a job to do. He does it, expects his Shield to follow him with the gentle firmness he commands.

Very few have seen the truly ruthless streak that hides in his backbone, ready to finish what's started if the need arises. Fewer live to pass the knowledge along.

Except. None of this is that easy. Of course it isn't.]

( Somewhere, there has to be a mix-up. No way is Usagi Tsukino, the lazy, crybaby wonder, a Sword. If anything, her tender heart puts her in the exact corner a Shield would fit into, but even that's a stretch. How's she not a commoner?

It doesn't make sense. So why does she still try so hard? She'll never be strong enough.

I'd love to play her against a nontraditional Shield partner, aka somebody who's rough and tumble or a silent giant or just a general badass type - or at least someone who looks that way, regardless of their true self. Let's dial up the mismatched classes! )

Being the Royal Engineer came with a few perks. Aside from adding the word “Royal” to his employment title he got to enjoy being inside the Castle and of a significant status. What he liked most was having an entire lab to himself that just allowed him to run ramped in. Which he did, frequently, and for days on end. Elijah survived mostly on Coffee and whatever food the servants snuck in here in the hopes he didn’t nearly kill himself.

It was good, having a space to himself that while probably a mess to both was what he considered “chaotically organized”. He could find everything that he needed to, in the exact place that he left in. The only times he left this place was when he absolutely had to in order to speak to the King. Most of the time though, he didn’t actually need to, and King Regis sent a letter. Elijah was fine with that, the servants considered him a “recluse” who lives in the cellars. They might be right.

He was tucked behind a computer currently, working on creating a new type of weapon that might work. So far, it doesn’t seem to be but Elijah was a very stubborn person. If it doesn’t work right this particular second he’ll work on it until it eventually does. He typed a few more times on the keyboard, sipped a cup of coffee (was that five now? Was it still morning?) and heard the sensor on top of his desk go off with a warning.

“Elijah, Prince Caelum is here.”

Elijah picked his head up, blinking at the figure that now stood in his lap, moving through the mess that it was with far too much practice. The downside of working in the Castle was his lab was also a frequently disturbed place by the Prince. Was it a downside or a perk, actually? Elijah didn’t dislike Prince Noctis, quite the opposite, and he was one of the few people that seemed to genuinely find the chaos that was Elijah’s thought process interesting.

“It might help to warn me before he’s standing inside the lab already, Chloe.” The AI didn’t reply, but he could feel the sass from the computer without it having too. He paused the coding on the laptop he was using and sat it aside, dragging himself up to his feet as he sipped the coffee more.

Prince Noctis was Warrior, a person with offensive supernatural abilities that’s strength was offense. Typically this meant he was far more interested in the weapons Elijah made than anything else. He didn’t have anything to show off this time, he’d been working on defensive things. Noctis was engaged to a Guardian, some Princess from another country, he wasn’t sure if the man still was. There seemed to have been a problem. She was nice, from what he remembered, but he thought the newspaper read that she fell in love with another Warrior. Contracted to them.

Elijah wasn’t interested in the politics of it all, it was why he kept himself quite distant from the entire thing, not telling a single soul about his own ‘Guardian’ abilities. He was content here, in his lab, so long as no one found out. The last thing anyone thought he’d be good at was healing people anyway.

“Did you get bored of meetings with your father?” Amusement reflected in his eyes as he sipped his tea. “Should I bow, Prince Caelum?”

Noct liked the lab, it was one of the few places he could be himself. Elijah was just the right type of mad-scientist mixed with laid back Cool Dude. And also an ADHD disaster. He liked him from the start. It was a relief when his engagement fell through.

Luna had given her best shot at trying to uphold her end of the betrothal but she couldn't do it. Noct didn't want her to, she was in love with someone else and that was deemed better for everyone. She and her new husband could be a power couple and he was on the hunt again. Officially. Unofficially he was hoping he was finished. He didn't know about Elijah but he had a feeling, an attraction...

"Oh yeah, grovel." he waved his hand and stepped in, looking at the place. He didn't see anything finished but Elijah's projects were the most interesting when they were in R&D.

"Hi, Chloe."

"Welcome, your highness."

"It's Noct, Chloe. I keep saying."

"Welcome, your highness. Noct."

Noct sighed and looked at Elijah. This was intentional programming yes?

"Beyond bored, I wanted to claw my face off. All day they were talking about new women to marry me off to. Not sure why I was invited, I didn't say anything all day. I snuck out, doubt they've noticed yet." not that it matters, he had no intention of obeying whatever order they came up with. They could command him to marry the most eligible girl in the world and he'd say no.

"Thought you might need to get some fresh air. Came to invite you out for a bite. You know... and also maybe soon? I think I saw my dad's attendants coming down here to grill you on something. We don't have to go far. The next room over is fine."

[ The bond between Sword and Shield can be broken. If not by the disentanglement procedure, then death works. Not to mention that severance is quicker. Colder. Easier, in some respects.

In others, the knife never falls out of a wound that can't heal. Ask legendary Sword Thorin Oakenshield, who lost his Shield ten years ago.

Don't ask. Asking is a bad idea.

[As a Warrior, Milla knew the advantages of having a Guardian by her side. Her powers would be amplified, and protecting the world from monsters would be that much more of an easier task.

It's not as if she didn't feel the pull of a Guardian, but she had a village to protect, a village full of commoners. Most Guardians wanted her to come with them to fight in a greater area, but Milla is steadfast in her duty: to protect her own village. Without any other Warrior or Guardian living here, it would be easy pickings if she weren't around.

Perhaps if a Guardian offered to aid her in her mission, or convinced her of another way, she'd be more willing to bond with them. But as it is, she is a Warrior alone, and she doesn't mind shouldering the responsibility.]

[Guardian, but will proclaim he's a Druid, Bard, or Mage just to be contrary ~~and because he personally can't tank very strong physical attacks.~~ Can actually provide healing, buffs, and support, although his preferred methods of dealing with fights are trickery and avoidance.

Currently (or previously, depending on the scenario) uncontracted. Has a history of dodging any and all attempts to form one in spite of being a highly capable Guardian, to the point of becoming a fugitive and making his own hideout away from the city. If he does find a Warrior he happens to like, he might also have waffled a bit before actually establishing a contract, and that's under extenuating circumstances.

Might also have "a bit" of Monster blood mixed in his genes, but who knows, really. ~~He does. More than a bit.~~

“I haven’t done anything… this time.” He enjoyed messing around sure, he could destroy the entire world if he wanted to probably, but he was behaving himself this week. Besides, what fun was it if he couldn’t mess with the heads of the servants who wandered down here?

Truthfully he wasn’t particularly hungry, and he wasn’t a fan of crowds or interacting with people in general. He could, of course, he attended those parties they held. He might not enjoy it, but he did. The idea of just spending time with Noctis though was quite fascinating, it had been a while since they managed to do that. The more years passed the more the other seemed a bit busy with whatever Royal duties he needed to attend to.

“This isn’t your way of luring me out of my lab to watch you just beat some monsters up, is it?” Noctis was a strong fighter, and he actually did enjoy watching him fight, but it wasn’t always fun when he ended up dragging himself back to Insomnia injured.

“You know I keep a first aid kit down here for those moments when you drag yourself in here looking like death warmed over.” Those few times where he was actually passed out from his injuries Elijah just healed him with magic. It was far easier even if that in particular wasn’t his strong suit. He’d rather try though than have Noctis bleed out on his nice floor.

Noctis’ father was going to be angry to know that his son was off running around for fun with him rather than actually doing his duties. But, that hadn’t stopped him before, Noctis was a bit of a free spirit. It was one of the things Elijah found most interesting about him.
