I miss you more all the time. Who knew being apart would be so difficult? I know we don't have a choice, but it's hard to keep from imagining what it would be like if you were here with me. Then again, I don't think you'd enjoy being around so many military men - they can be a little... rough around the edges.
I miss listening to you read. Somehow even the most boring stories are fascinating when you tell them. I wonder how many new stories you'll have by the time I get back.
Please tell me you're staying safe. If you need supplies or anything, you only have to ask and I'll pull every string I possibly can to get them to you.

[Holi Yinsen had always been fond of handwritten letters. He tended to hang onto them, reread them, play the memories of the times they were from over and over in his head later. That kind of sentiment had rarely served him well in life, but it was a hard habit to shake, nonetheless.]

I hate to admit to this, as it's not going to be comforting, but I have no tolerance for military men. It's better that I'm not there to make things awkward - you know how I get when I get nervous and go quiet. It would only come across as rudeness, and I don't want to cause you any more stress than you're already going through. I keep you in my prayers, and hope Allah will guide you in these exhausting circumstances. You're never far from my thoughts.
I've been attempting to brush up on my Russian lately, after I realized how rusty it's gotten. In the process I've committed entire folktales to memory. When you get back, you'll have to let me tell you some. They can be a bit dark, but there's a resiliency to some of them that I think is inspiring, in that way that stories have always been a balm for the heart. They keep me company in your absence.
Don't worry about me. I'm doing well, relatively speaking. Things aren't perfect, but I've been worse by far.
Try to write to me when you can. I know some gaps in communication are inevitable, so I don't expect daily updates, of course, but I do worry when the silence stretches on. Perhaps that's paranoid of me. In my defense, that's a side effect of affection.

[ There's something more genuine about holding a letter in your hands, Stone finds. It's easier to feel connected, knowing the one you love wrote each word, touched the paper, sealed the envelope. It's romantic, in the classical sense as well as the modern one. ]

I apologize for taking so long to write back. I know you understand the nature of my work, but I truly dislike the thought of you waiting to hear from me, not knowing what's happening. And while I can't share many details, just know that I'm safe, and I'm thinking of you.
In regards to your letter - don't forget, I was one of those military men, once upon a time. Though I don't believe I was ever quite so crude as these ones seem to be. I wouldn't put you through so much as a meal break with them. They might upset your delicate sensibilities. ;)
I never was much good at Russian, but I'd love to hear you speak it. How is it that you can make even the most difficult and complex languages sound more like music than words? At night I remember your voice, the way you would sing to me sometimes, and it helps ease my mind. As for the folktales, I think the darkest ones tend to be the most effective. What are those tales for, after all, if not to remind us of our own ability to survive through the darkest times?
You tell me not to worry knowing full well that's impossible. I will always worry, as long as I am away from you. But I know you are capable of caring for yourself, so I will try nonetheless.
When you write next, will you tell me of home? Is the sun shining, or has it rained? Time passes strangely here; I cannot keep track of what day it is. I regret that I have neglected my own prayers at least once since being here.
