It was not going to be a good day for Sam Vimes.

He hated to do it, he really did. He'd put it off as long as he could. He'd fobbed off Vetinari, even - and that had taken considerable doing. But something had to be done, he was told. He'd pointed out that, yes, she'd pissed off most of the powerful people in the city all at once. But that didn't mean she'd done the wrong thing.

'Just so,' Vetinari had said, 'just so.' In that frustrating, fussy little voice he had that told you to go and get him a solution he could use.

And so he'd passed the word down. She was to be sent up to his office the moment she came in from patrol. He worked the stub of his cigar from side to side in his mouth like it was offending him, squinting down at the paperwork. Gods, he hated having to do this. She deserved better. But it had to be done.

It wasn't a surprise at all. She knew what she was doing, no matter how much she'd love to claim instinct or loss of control or - bloody hells - 'time of the month.' She made decisions and she'd have to live with them.

But she sure as hell wasn't going to make this any easier on anyone else.

She didn't go up straight fron returning. First she changed into her uniform, with breastplate and belt and sword and everything she usually claimed exemption from due to 'special circumstances.' Because sometimes you had to wear the uniform, because you needed the protection it provided.

Then she pads up to his office and, holding her helmet at her hip at a carefully calculated angle, she rapped her knuckles on the door.

"Right, come on in," he said, then groaned when he saw her.

She was doing that to him, then. The Watch didn't have a full dress uniform - he'd made bloody sure of that - but he knew the safety, and the defiance, any uniform could bring with it, used right. Of course, he had a dress uniform. Despite his best attempts to lose it. Sybil just kept replacing it. She'd also implied that tights could get tighter if certain recalcitrance weren't addressed.

"Don't make me say at ease," he said, gesturing at the chair opposite him, "we've been through too much and I'd call it a courtesy."

Once she was seated, he lifted on piece of paper from the pile, stubbing out his cigar. It was going to be unpleasant enough as it was, she didn't need that with her nose.

"I have here a communique," he said, disdainfully, "from Lord Downey. It is to inform me, formally, of just how upset he is. As well as other guild leaders. Most all of them, with the notable absence of Queen Molly."
