The Haunted Forest

THE HAUNTED FOREST MEME

Fairy tales, young adult novels, and tourist traps all speak of the horrors that can be found inside a forest: ghosts, goblins, witches, werewolves, and more. The particulars of these stories might differ due to culture and time period, but they all remind us of the impossible and tap into our deepest and most basic fears. Some of them even have a happy ending.

What will you encounter, once you cross that tree line? Will you come out alive? If you are curious, you should check out some of real life “haunted forests”.

WARNING: Some of the prompts below totally belong in a horror movie and might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Please be sure to plot ahead for these!

DIRECTIONS

PROMPTS

1. GHOSTS » It is a known fact that only ten percent of ghosts are friendly, five percent are under curses, and the rest of them just want to kill you.

2. THE EVIL WITCH » Did you learn nothing from Hansel and Gretel? Do not eat the house!

3. A SIMPLE TRAVELER » You knew this forest was haunted. The map and villagers all warned you. You just asked for trouble and have found it.

4. WEIRD NOISE » For the last time, we get that you are hearing noises. The forest just makes noises, okay? It doesn’t mean something is there! Right?

5. FAIRY HELPER » Congrats, you met one of the nicer mythical creatures! While a bit annoying, at least this being is not set on killing you!

6. BATTLE » Be it a fight that started in the forest or somehow went into it, you might have more to worry about than who you were fighting originally.

7. THE MAZE » This is the worst. You turn here, make another turn there, and find yourself back at the beginning of a maze. Can you ever get out?

8. TALKING ANIMALS » Be sure to be polite—animals are fickle and could send you in the wrong direction.

9. BIG BAD WOLF » A classic cliché, you have run across someone who seems nice. Too nice. Just what is their end game here?

10. STRANGE SIGHTS » You cannot resist a good mystery—and when it comes to that, the forest is full of them! Come on, grab your mystery caps!

11. FAIR FOLK » These beings are known for their love for pranks. Have they turned your head into that of a donkey, or is someone just egging you?

12. BAD VACATION » On your online review, you are going to make sure to mention the broken toilet and the serial killer who was not taking a vacation.

13, A HIKING TRIP » Exercise and fresh air are lovely things, but maybe you should have chosen a different forest. The last 50 hikers have all died here.

14. THE QUEST » Through sleet and rain and shine, you must complete whatever your quest is. Rescue a damsel? Find a cure? Slay a dragon? Good luck.

15. UNWANTED VISITOR » When a trigger-happy hermit or grumpy dragon kills you, don’t say we didn’t warn you! There were literally dozens of signs.

16. A UNICORN » Oh my gosh oh my gosh you found a unicorn quick take a picture!

17. THE CASTLE » Many tales speak of castles that change locations or disappear with the sunrise. Can you break the curse or will you get trapped too?

18. THE NICE WITCH » Not all witches are evil! This one actually helps people on their quests from time to time … for a price. Are you willing to give it?

19. RAIN » You are cold, lost, and hungry, and now it’s raining?! Ugh!

20. HUNTING » Whether for food or for a dangerous criminal, you gear up and decide to go into the woods. Beware, this is no nice place.

21. THE OLD MAN » Look, we told you to ignore this guy. He might seem nice, but any advice or “magical items” he gives will not help you.

22. BAD LUCK » The map was outdated. The car got a flat tire. The boats have holes in them. A simple camping trip is now an utter comedic nightmare.

23. FLOWER GATHERING » What a lovely pastime! Are you picking flowers to woo a crush or cheer up a friend? Hold on. Where did the path home go?

24. SNOW» Okay, so saying, “At least it’s not snowing” is new.

25. THE HERO » Okay, fine, so you don’t believe in legends and refuse to heed the warning signs. Be prepared for all that you will face, foolish warrior!

26. THE HUNTED » As a last resort, you have gone to the woods to escape something that is pursuing you. Hopefully you will survive.

27. MORE BAD LUCK » This time, the whole forest seems to be out to get you: poison ivy, a squirrel sending mountain lions on you, and a rude llama.

28. RANDOM » Is there a trope or scenario that we forgot? Want to roll again? Go right ahead.

[would you be interested in 26-ish, with Sam and his pack having been sent to investigate Lena and the events around her? I've read the synopsis of her canon that you linked on your journal and it shouldn't be too hard to smush their canons together enough to make it make sense, I think.]

[I'd prefer to keep any horror-like prompts on the lighter side, if used at all.]

"Out of the darkness beyond the uttermost north of Westeros, a race called the White Walkers emerged. Tall and gaunt, with flesh pale as milk and cold blue eyes burning like stars, they wielded razor-thin swords of ice and raised wights — undead creatures — to fight the living. The Night's Watch saw to their defeat, and, to ensure that the people would never be caught off-guard by an invasion from the north again, Bran the Builder, founder of House Stark, raised the Wall from the shattered remains of Jelmor's moon, cutting off the Lands of Always Winter from the rest of Westeros."

"How does a single wall stop the conquest of such creatures?”

"They say the Wall is enchanted."

Jon blinks, disoriented, lifting a hand over his eyes to shield himself from the harsh light of the sun. He... doesn't know where he is, and it stays that way for a few more minutes as he stands in the middle of the forest, trying to get his bearings. Oh, right. The Wall had been under attack, and the men of the Night's Watch had boarded their ships to bring the fight to the enemy.

It takes him a while longer to realize why he feels so out of it: the Force has gone haywire. He's not in the middle of the disturbance, he's sure, but it seems to stretch over a large enough distance that he can't sense anything past it, as though he's trapped in some sort of bubble. A bubble in which everything, to put it simply, feels downright weird. Not even dark side weird, or Westerosi North weird, just... wrong. Like everything's in a jumble, and the world isn't as it should be.

Which world is this, anyway? Not Jelmor, judging from the terrain, despite it being the planet closest to the Wall. Had he crashed? He'd been in the thick of battle, that much he can remember. But why is it that the last thing he remembers is Padmé asking, on their first meeting—

He curses under his breath, and he fumbles for his comm, jarred into sense by the memory of her. That's right, he'd been recalled to Castle Black shortly after he'd arrived with her on Winterfell, and he'd had no choice but to leave her with his brothers and Maester Luwin. Had he checked in? Had he told her he was going off to fight? He can't remember. And the Others take his device, because the damn thing isn't working. At least, not anymore. He can't access the memory, too, so there's no way for him to tell what his last conversation with her had been. What in the seven hells is going on?

Going up to the surface had still been dangerous after the meteor shower, but that hadn't stopped Jon from going up to work on the distress message machine. Determined and bundled up. And it hadn't stopped him when he'd thought another meteor had fallen, turning out instead to be Jane coming back for him. So it probably shouldn't be any surprise that once Jane's better and more stable on her feet after being on Jon insisted bed rest for a good portion of her return so far, that she'd insisted on going to the surface. She'd mentioned that she wanted to double-check the pod she'd come down in for something, and as much as he wanted to keep her safe, he'd also bundled her up in warm clothes and a coat and come to the surface with her. Because Jon rarely had it in him to say no to her over things that could easily be done faster than arguing over it. And they'd been parted enough that he didn't want to argue anymore.

So instead he was bundled up right next to her. Though he's staring at the bank of trees that's made an appearance between them and what he's sure is the way to her pod. They're in the semi-middle of Chicago, and not even the park portion, so there shouldn't have been trees here like this. And not a length of them that spread down further than can be seen, meaning there's no real way around them either. There's a small sigh as he looks down at her. He has a pack with blankets, food, a small tent to bunker down in if they need it, and water enough to last them a few days out here because just in case has been life after the devastation. But this wasn't exactly what he'd been expecting when they came out here. "I know a lot of your coming home is a blur but I swear there weren't trees here when I found you and brought you home." Gloved fingers scratch at his chin a moment. "Do you want to try and go through or do we go back?" Because he's very much letting her decide since this is her mission, he's just here to keep her safe and company.

Reorienting to the surface hadn't been easy, even without the new living conditions to take into consideration. Gravity, for one, had been incredibly punishing, as was living with so many other people; up at the station there were pretty much only seven of them awake, with the rest in stasis. So even if Jane didn't want to be in bed rest for far longer than necessary, she ultimately had no choice in the matter as her body and mind demanded otherwise.

But she's been resting long enough, and it's time for answers. Because Jon's right, her homecoming had been a blur — there'd been some commotion, a fight even, just before her descent, and she swears Robb had come down with her, despite those who'd found her insisting that she was alone. So, yes, she needs to get back to her pod and grab the flight recorder. Only... well, there are trees. Trees that Jon swears weren't there before. Trees in a section of their city that didn't actually have trees, at least from what she remembers before going up.

"I'm pretty sure that's not native to North America," she says with a nervous exhale. She knows a little about plants, but zoology's more her forte, since she'd wanted to be a veterinarian. She wrings her hands together before clutching the straps of her backpack instead, casting a glance up at the sky. "How long do we have before it gets too dark to turn back?" She wants to get to the pod, but she doesn't want to put his life in danger, either.
