WHAT TYPE OF CULT IS IT? BESIDES DEMON SUMMONING

1. LARPers ⮞ Once a month y'all basically get together to roleplay some demon summoning cult hijinks, and it's that time of the month again.


2. Financial Scam ⮞ Perhaps cultists tithe a certain amount to the cult to (eventually) summon Mammon/Amon/[insert demon here]. Perhaps cultists market products to unwitting victims in the hopes of spreading the good word. Or maybe it's something else, but the point of it is a financial scam.


3. A Suspicious Commune, Basically ⮞ You're probably off in the mountains, burning strange bonfires, eating strange herbs, doing dubious things away from the point of view of the rest of society.


4. Sex ⮞ Fuck your way into summoning Mammon/Amon/[insert demon here].


5. One That Does Some Highly Illegal Activities ⮞ Human sacrifice? Money laundering? Drugs? The front for some organized crime?


6. Actual Magic ⮞ Amazingly, you somehow found the urban supernatural cult that's very real, and is actually probably going to summon a demon soon.


7. Eldritch ⮞ You thought you signed up for demon summoning. It turns out that name you’ve all been invoking belongs to something much, much bigger.

CULT ACTIVITY

1. Initiation ⮞ Someone - yourself, maybe, someone else, possibly - has decided to join the cult and now it’s time to truly bring them into the cultist fold. Robes, wine, ritual activities, maybe a new cultist name, showing them the ropes, the sky’s the limit.


2. Prayer ⮞ As all good cults have a good round of prayer at some point! Community is important with a cult. Maybe you just sit around in a room and sway for a while, or maybe you go outside buck naked and howl at the stars.


3. Atonement ⮞ You've been a naughty follower. How does your shepherd deal with sheep who stray from the flock?


4. Expulsion ⮞ Or at least, that’s what they’ll tell everyone. The rest of the flock will be told that you simply up and left in the night. They won't be told that you were questioning their beliefs, ferreting information back to whatever arm of the law you work for, knitting their doom in the shadows. Whether any of that is true is another matter entirely. For now, let’s just hope you get out of this whole mess in one piece.


5. CHEESE IT, THE FUZZ ⮞ Uh oh. The heretics and the heathens of the unbelieving world have come to bust your doors down and to put a stop to your beautiful belief. Do you guys have guns?


6. Summoning (demon) ⮞ It worked! Against all odds (probably) you managed to summon something...other. A glimpse of another world, perhaps. Or perhaps you managed to summon a demon, bind a smaller creature by your rituals and make it your servant. Did you mean to do this? Are you surprised? Are you pleased with this proof that what you have been doing did, in fact, work?


7. Summoning (apocalypse) ⮞ Oh SHIT. It worked, but you accidentally summoned something larger. Maybe instead of a glimpse into another world you ended up with a rift, and the other realm is bleeding into Earth. Or perhaps instead of a smaller demon you ended up with a more powerful one who has asserted control over your cult, and, in turn, will corrupt the world. Did you mean to do this? Are you surprised? Will you accept that life will never be the same, or will you try to save the world before it is too late?


8. Other ⮞ After all, there's many things you can do in a cult.

[ The whole place reeks of bad magic.

Rune's expression is twisted into something unpleasant, hand on Ciro's chest to keep him from walking forward as they pause at a doorway. Maybe they should have gathered more information before breaking into the grounds of a coven recently new to the city, but when they'd both felt the rock of power in the early hours of the morning the day before... Rune hadn't considered the dangers. He should have, mostly for Ciro's sake, but it's too late to retrace their steps back the way they'd come. It had been a maze of traps, easily navigated with Rune's expertise, and ahead of them remains a mystery. ]

Do you feel that? [ Rune hisses softly, eyes flicking to Ciro. ] Don't touch anything in there.

[ If they get cursed, they'll have a worse time dealing with the fallout, and his fingers linger against him a moment longer before he's pushing into the open room.

A figure attacks him from the left, instinct working to protect himself as Rune throws his arm out and sends them flying. He curls his fist and ignores the snap of bone when their neck breaks as he walks forward, ready to set fire to anyone who tries to ambush them. There's no one else, and it's an alarm that rings in his head as they descend the steps, leaving behind a mess from some ritual that had been performed there only minutes ago. The staircase is wet with fluid, bright and shimmery and reminiscent of blood, but Rune doesn't stop to inspect it. In fact, he starts to breathe heavily once he hits the bottom, and the pull of magic here is so strong he feels like he's going to suffocate. He grits his teeth. ]

Break the circle. [ It's a bad plan when there is no real plan to do that. ] If it gets too unstable, leave.

[ Because chances are one of them could get possessed by whatever they're summoning in there, and Rune wipes the sweat from the back of his neck before shouldering most of his weight against the door in front of them. A push, another with the force of his own power behind it, and when it creaks open, he holds it long enough for Ciro to slip in ahead of him. Then, he follows and immediately casts a protective barrier—just in case. ]

[Ciro felt it too, so when Rune was in a hurry to head out and investigate, he'd been the one to stop him and insist he reconsider getting involved in whatever it was. When that didn't work, he instead insisted that he be allowed to join him. He's not good at fighting, and brought very little to the table offensively, but if Rune was badly hurt, he would at least be able to help keep him in one piece.

He takes his time, sticking close behind Rune as he navigates the area. This territory isn't theirs, and the stink of bad, evil magic lingers almost everywhere the closer they get to the source. Ciro feels that same pull, but he doesn't have any need to know what caused it, why it was so strong, he doesn't want to be involved in any of this at all, but Rune? Keeping him from doing something he feels he has to do is impossible. The only thing he can do is watch his friend's back.]

Rune!

[It seems like Rune sees the cloaked witch before Ciro has to warn for them. They must be using some kind of ward because he can't feel anything from them at all. The crack of bone is deeply disturbing but he's thankful he can't feel that pain. They're screaming and Ciro thinks to ease their pain but the smell of blood is so overwhelming here and there are bones of animals and humans alike littering the room. How many people have died here? Or animal sacrifices made? He knows this kind of magic exists but it goes against nature and he hates it.

Ciro points two fingers at the cloaked figure wailing in pain and instead silences them.]

That's a terrible plan! [Ciro sort of shout-whispers at Rune, not really knowing what kind of magic is going on specifically. He doesn't know any of these rituals, but he suspects Rune does, or wants to. Ciro hasn't asked if he's here to steal spells or stop them, but it hardly matters at this point. Everything just feels awful. There were no witches or living things in the area, but there's something else he hasn't felt before.

He steps through the door first and as soon as he breaks the circle whatever had been summoned attempts to possess him. Whatever barrier Rune put on him helps protect him, so he can close the circle behind himself, before Rune can enter.]

Don't do whatever you're thinking! [Killing it, specifically. Probably.] It doesn't want to be here...I can feel what it wants. Take the barrier off me.

Okay so here's the thing--Oliver is a sensible guy. He really is. Like, he's basically a step up from an intern and he works in a cubicle in an office and he answers the phone and he rides his bike to work when he isn't taking the subway. Like, he's pretty sure if you look up mundane in the dictionary, his picture is right there, maybe with his name underneath. He doesn't believe in ghosts or the supernatural or magic or any of it--or, well, he didn't. And then the rats that lived in the alley behind his house started talking. And he touches dead plants and they're alive again. And his life has just--well it's gone a little crazy, in the past month.

So he's trying to be flexible. He's trying to expand his mind. And the girl at the crystal shop said this ritual (he's going with ritual, because he thinks if he says 'spell' out loud he may just back out of the entire thing) would 'reveal the truth' and because he's expanding his mind he's going to give it a try.

There are candles. There's chalk on his hardwood floors. There's a crystal--because that's the kind of thing Oliver owns now: special ritual crystals. How is this his life?

Oliver takes a deep breath and looks down at the leatherbound book in his hands. He can do this. It'll bring truth. He could use some truth--because it's either find some truth or check himself into a treatment facility, which would definitely cost him his job. He can do this. No one has to know. It's just a little ritual.

The first time he reads through, his voice is more nervous than he expects it to be--and the only result is a slight flicker of the candle that might be a result of his air conditioning--

The second time he reads through his voice is steadier, stronger:
