"I know. Doesn't change my desire to do something for you in return though."

Not because he felt like he owed him, but because he wanted to. He didn't want his effort to repay him turning into a burden, but he did feel like he should do something, at least. He would find a way to properly say thanks, sometime in the future.

"It won't be anything too grand. I'm not sure if I should follow that with an I promise or unfortunately," He said, with a quiet little laugh.

He deserved something grand for saving a life, but it would be something small, so he supposed that I promise was desired. Perhaps some fresh food, or even just more ration bars. The idea of parting with food was a great source of anxiety for him, of course, but he managed to suppress his instinct to be afraid at the idea.
